iD didn't spawn a server tho, they hosted a whole new QL network. not sure they would share that, not sure if an iD guy would admin that.

By "testing" I didn't mean for them to screw around with QuakeLive's network capability/settings in the competition. However, the head of the QuakeLive project, whatever his name was, even said himself that most suggestions made by "professional players" to improve the game are in most cases also good changes for the average or new player. With DreamHack being the world's largest LAN, iD could get very valuable information from it in a competition format with something at stake (cos that's when you notice flaws in a system/game/ruleset the most). Not to mention, reach a ton of gamers at once. And the fact that the game itself is free (afaik) to begin with, handing out free invites for the competition for example would be an ideal promotion as well.

I am not saying they will do it. I just think it's a great opportunity for iD as well as great for the community if this were to happen. If this means they need to "create" a new network within the game or something, sure, why not, they are all bright programmers at iD.

EDIT: Ok, was kinda thinking about DreamHack here, my bad. But my point still stands. Just too lazy to edit bits and pieces to make the argument suitable for ESWC :P

I think Toxic is waiting and hoping for QL to replace Q3 CPMA (which is a highly possible scenario, even at the Masters of Athens), since he plays QL REALLY much now days and enjoys it a lot. I rarely play, but if I do, I see Toxic owning people here and there all the time :)

tox really should've played cpma vq3 tourneys. he has all required chracteristic to be the best. in ql he'll have to use rockets a lot more, and his rockets aren't nearly as good as his hitscan.

This could even be interpreted as modifying Q3. Could be CPMA CQ3, could be a new gameplay mode for CPMA, really nothing is in written in stone considering that QL isn't even in public beta yet... and QL non-beta is a loooong ways away.

It is more important for the ESWC to have a stable and reliable game with proper features, than to just go with the newest game.

i don't think cpma will add another gameplay, and i'm fairly certain nothing major will ever happen to cpma again. the devs of cpma didn't even know about that statement :P

I wonder why the hell Toxic is so overerated in q3 duel? He was one of the best TDMers, he was really good in duelling as well, true. But why would each second say "he is god. he will win!"!? There a lot of q3players even in Sweeden which have better record in q3 duelling then Tox (fox, zamuz, fazz, fooki). And I wouldn't even compare him with the names as cooller, zero4, fatality, lexer, cypher, unkind, czm and many others... Anybody, please, tell me what major q3 duel tournament toxic won? Which Cypher played. As did Cooller. And everyone else that really matters. And they were all beaten, usually badly.
People dismissing his duelling just because Quake 3 was on it's way out when he started really getting involved in the duel scene are choosing to ignore a large part of the advancement of the game. Just like Fatal1ty played for awhile while it was Thresh on top, and Cooller played behind Zero4 and Fatalt1ty. There were plenty of competitions where they placed low when they started getting into dueling.
But the "Q3 is all there ever was" that ignore the accomplishments in Q1, Q2, and Q4 are the only ones saying that Toxic is a "never was".
He'd just started making some serious headway in Q3 duel when the money shifted to Q4, and he evolved right along with it. And dominated like noone else has in ANY of the games...

How you can say he was making serious headway into Q3 duelling I don't know. His performances always left much to be desired and his higher placings could be largely put down to other players quiting entirely. I don't hear anybody say Jibo was making serious headway into Q3 duelling at that time despite being pretty much equal to Toxic.

His string of Q4 wins is extremely impressive but Q4 was and is very different to Q3, in the same way Q2 or QW are. Nobody goes on about how fucking awesome Purri was in Q4 even though he's been dominant in Q2 for so long.

Because as I see it, the way he played Q3 duel was very aim dependent. And at first he also played Q4 like that.
Now you can argue, as you did, that the gameplay changes helped him more than others (seriously tho, lowering rail damage is bad for cooller??).
But I think that he also got better at timing items and overall tactics and positioning. Plus simply had more experience.
Or put in other words, he actually games where his opponent's aim seemed better than his.

And those were, imo, also the things he was lacking in Q3, so there is the possibility he could improve his approach there, too.

Duh. They all started with Q3. But he hadn't had any more significant achievements than toxjq had when they all went to Quake 4.

Toxic has been and was able to attend all events for years and years. The odds were stacked against them (When it comes to Q4) as they couldn't develop the same competitive experience as Toxic was getting.

Toxic will be a Q3 TDM and Q4 legend only untill he actually achieves something relevant in Q3 Duel. For now people are overrating his Q3 Duel ability, I'm not doubting he'd be able to perform exceptionally well but he's never done so before.

Sorry, mate. Got your point wrong. Until 2006 he was one of the best players in Belarus, though weaker then Keeper, Enemy, Taran2l or Cherya. But in general "mid-seed" is right:)

The reason people expect a lot of him isn't really from his results in q3 duel tournaments but rather from his talent in quake in general.

When he stopped playing q3, he had one of the best aims around. He did reasonably well in q3 duel tournaments despite not playing duel much. He was clearly the best dueler in q4. It stands to reason that if he puts effort into playing q3 duel he would do well in it also. However, I'm not one of those people who assume that if he bet someone in q4 then he will definately beat them in q3.

The rest of the results were identical. This meant that Fox/QLR had more map wins than Toxic and thus they finished above him.
