There can be many different answer, but I think the easiest is to look at the margin.

e.g.:

The two winners win $10 each, while the loosers all loose $20. Then you would have to be a win on that table twive in a row which would be 1/3 * 1/3 = 1/9 or roughly 11% just to break even.

Now, the balance of the table in this case would be = 2*$10 - 4*$20 = -60$, which doesn't make sense until you look at the rake. By taking rakes the poker sites continually take money away from the table which eventually will amount to $60.


Note that the numbers are purely fictional, but the mechanism itself is real.

what happens is that the winning players play for many years and play often; the losing players can only do that if they are sitting on a few millions, so most people dont. one loser will play in his poker career much less than one winner. also winners tend to multi-table but losers do not or do less

so if you see 2 winners, 4 losers at a online poker table and the number of winner is 5%, this is logical.
