I don't think that he is not confident. This rather looks like a mental trick to me. In order to raise hope of other players that he is weak, although he isn't.

Is it just me or does he always say this exact same thing before every tournament? maybe you are on to something here... :) not to take anything away from him, but he always seems very 'unprepared' before every tournament...not necessarily game wise but in terms of his mental state..
