A firend of mine often gets higher frame rates with wine that he used to get with windows. he gets those in et and rtcw, too which are also based on q3 engine.
sure that he uses wine?
there are linux versions for both games
getting higher fps in q3 with ubuntu, too (compared to xp), but who cares if you can have 300 instead of 290
I've seen this reported a couple of times that windows bin + wine is faster than the native linux binary. For OpenGL wine just passes straight through to the native GL implementation anyway, so there wouldn't be a big hit there.
It may be a reflection of the compiler - perhaps MS VC++ is doing a better job at optimising the code than gcc, so a natively compiled binary is less efficient than a Windows binary with a few hooks.
well, i can only speak for myself. i tried out wc3, d2 and trackmania nations, all ran with about 4-5fps lower so it didnt matter at all that i used wine. i havent tried anything that is really challangeing for my rig, but were talking about ql here, so i assumed it will run fine
This thread belongs in the official forums, cos there you can get the proper answer. Infact, there are already several threads on the topic, so don't bother creating a new one - just read those.
