at least there was one not so long ago

that even was sort of a major update (just 4-8 weeks ago or so) - it even updated the gameversion and now you can't play back old demos
they removed some things which makes the gameplay on a high competitive level totally different

If they are to make the changes in the first place. No-one forces you to play OSP nor CPMA. If you like ID's path, by all means, follow it and don't play either mods.

It's not superior, it's worse. The way Blizzard is doing it, it is "official" and everybody accepts it. The way id games are, everything is fragmented and disorganized. It's chaos. How many outsiders know about CPM? Not only that but CPM is un-intuititve as fuck. You'd have to be an insider to understand it. That would never happened if it was owned by a company that has an interest in serving players. Blizzard is doing it the right way.

I don't understand how this works as an argument for ID's hypothetical choice of closed source rather than against it. If ID had no interest in serving our interest and would deny it from anyone willing to do so, then what ass would you pull the fixes out off? Each of us would just leave off with worse product.

Yeah, but Blizzard actually continues to support their games, especially if used competitively. ID took WAY too long to add simple things into Q4, and even though Quake 3 is still being used, there still isn't an update for it in a while.

We'll see how Quake Live goes (Taking FOREVER), but as of right now, I rather have a 1v1 FPS game that blizzard creates (even if it's a spin-off of SC or something) and play that. You know that Blizzard would continue to support it.

atm id's main focus is hyping their new game engine in an attempt to bait licensees, and also making single player games which showcase said engine while including new revolutionary gameplay elements, such as open-ended gameplay and driving cool vehicles

You could argue that Blizzard has 10x the responsibility (WoW - Maintaining it, and SC2, developing it)

the blizzard playerbase is stupid larger than that of id so the support makes sense. if id continued to support their games I seriously doubt the playerbases would increase any noticeable amount.

The point is that they understand, support and stimulate competitive play of their games, whereas ID seems quite ignorant about it ('those guys in the back').

Trust me, I'm the first to hate people when they compare everyone to Blizzard without taking into account things like the huge player base.

But I wasn't referring to the release of a patch 10 years after the launch of the game. It's more that Blizzard wouldn't have allowed something like Q4 1.0 be released under his brand, they wouldn't have abandoned a game like Q3 in 2002 when it still had lots of players, they would have supported the competitive community and all that while trying to attract the casual gamer, offering them an easy way to play the game without downloads, third party mods, etc.

This last part is changing with QL, the rest is not. Also, all those things add to the bigger player base, it's a cause-effect relation and brand prestige, something id has lost.

are you sure about that? at least in the past i think i remember stuff like how you could make immortal zerglings and stuff, and something with wraiths i cant really remember, plus you could get more money in return from converting mutalisks then cancelling it... all of this was exploits and didnt need any hacks...

Exploit = something in the game built in "bug", which you can exploit.
Hack = normally something you download or use to crack the games code into doing something it wasn't meant to do.

i just wish blizzard could change the netcode to be more like warcraft 3 (mainly NAT support jebus). i've had serious problems trying to host all the time even with every port possible open, yet only in sc, i can host just fine in wc3. thank god for hamachi or i wouldnt be able to play at all

there is actually a way to get it working. You have to add a new DWORD to the Starcraft registry key called Game Data Port. Enter in the decimal number of your choice, open that port for your IP on the router, and you can now play on b.net with other people on your local network. I am 100% it works (since I use it myself).

However, I totally agree with you why they haven't added in support for routers ala war3. It either would take too long or no one is going to bother doing it (unless someone over there really wanted too). Anyway, it's good to see blizzard continually patch their games especially getting rid of some of the ridiculous hacks, but with starcraft there is a huge reason why they still do (korea). Plus, some of the patches only fixed some very very minor stuff, which didnt really need to be addressed. Also, I don't know how some of you are comparing blizzard to id. Even though they have a hired a bunch of more people (and are still doing that), they are not even close to having the amount of employees blizzard does. Some of you really do fall into "the grass is greener" side.

i added the game data port registry entry as you suggested and havent tested it yet but it sounds like its for multiple computers playing starcraft behind nat. i cant play using just the default 6112 by myself lol

oh by yourself you are even having problems? Then I suggest you update your router's firmware. My Linksys WRT54G was causing problems with SC just by myself, until I got the latest firmware, fixed it.

i've removed my routers from it. so all my traffic is going through my modem (which is itself a router despite only one port) and 2 switches. so the problem lies at my p600r-elnk dsl modem

its just a client spawned without any units, a cheap hack at a map level

so make observererering possible. for real. :d

To play thru hamachi you'll have to host a network UDP server...

That is was hamachi is, a virtual network.

So you start a network UDP server, and he'll have to goto muliplayer, network UDP, select a profile and he should be able to see your game.

Make sure to turn your filewall off when hosting.
