why?

NoGhost is not popular on 1.32, but it runs the entire 1.16 community. Its a good mod, but most of the servers running it are instagib.

Just curious, why does such thing as "1.16 community" even exist?

1.16n was useful as a version because Dreamcast players were able to connect to the same servers, but that surely isn't the reason why they haven't updated to 1.32. It also means they cannot take advantage of anything like cnq3, or even a slew of id bugfixes (eg 1.25 includes things like "Typing % in chat text causes the client to be disconnected with an illegible server message")

i actually know some 1.16 players, and the reason is because they're cheap
they could just torrent 1.16 and play on any 1.16 server because there's no check for cd key
also
some of them think that 1.32 made the shaft overpowered....they don't know CPMA exists
they also think that 1.32 forces PB to run, they don't realise that PB is something that's only forced by a server cvar
as nice as the guys i know are, they're very uneducated in this respect

you could do the same thing with 1.32 as well. torrent + sv_strictauth 0 + pb off = no cd key required. it's the only way to keep the small scene alive in my country.

Lots of 1.16 hacks for them to use, they'd need to find new ones to move to 1.32 (really, I think this is a part of it). They also seem to be old FFA players who think their little weekend FFA circle somehow represents the secret creme de la creme of FPS skills.

seriously... i played some guy who couldn't get a single frag against me in CPMA VQ3 DM6 (and i'm pretty shit)... after the game he's like "i'll rape you at 1.16 NoGhost"

You might think that was a hollow threat but 1.16n CTF community are all rail pros. If you played CTF rail with em, you'd prolly be hiding for cover. India's top 2 1.16n railers are from down south. Sauron from LoD clan and DareDevil from Z1. I'm a Z1 myself :P

I've played that mod and mode for over 2 years. I left it coz the indian community faded away. Revived it with my own servers but cost overruns shut that thing down.

i doubt it but never mind... not like i'm ever gonna play 1.16. never heard of those players or those clans either.

yes i know some of the people that play 1.16 also and they all are top notch railers. dm17 ownage mostly.

it's kinda like the Indian Dota scene. it's really really huge. more than 1000 players online on Garena everyday but we all use the 1.20e version of Warcraft 3 even though the latest patch 1.22 is available. a lot of people have slow connections so even a 60mb patch is annoying to download. Dota works perfectly fine on 1.20e so people don't bother. even though i have a relatively faster connection, updating is pointless as i wouldn't be able to join the others.

It's not that they don't care about other mods. It's just that playing laggy all weapons games on Indian servers or any other server doesn't make any sense. Unlagged Rail sounds like a savior in such a case which essentially NoGhost is all about.

1.16n has undoubtely the elitest freezetag and Instagib CTF clans like eRa, VZX, oNu, FF(a few indians in it), eM, ArC, MXP, ESP, MvM and so on. Also, 1.16n has some really good female quakers as well. I used to play on Japanese server where clans like KXN (Old school railers), FUKK, DIE, LoD and the likes honed their skills. To add to the difficulty, they add RTF i.e. you can't return the flag by touching it and have to carry it all the way back to your base to return to its post.

well CPMA is easily playable upto a 100 ping (even more actually... i'd say even 150 is ok for gametypes like CTF where you can still do a lot even if you're not hitting at your best). the netcode is fantastic. you don't need an Unlagged mod. besides, rail only instagib types are super boring imo.

I know, even a lot of old schoolers would often drop in with a line or two about instagib is not = Quake.

I've tried a zillion times to connect to your v-street server and always left it coz of the lag. Even though I'm in Delhi, a ping of 100 was way too much for me. It was heart breaking to see ESWC 2008 being dropped. Now that the Indiatimes server is up, I still can't imagine myself playing on it. NoGhost admins go to the extent of reducing weapon reloading time to compensate for the lag. Unlike the CPMA or Defrag community, NoGhost has shown more openness towards the usage of trick jumping maps with default 1.16n physics.

how does weapon reload time compensate for lag? btw... 100 is very playable. stick to it for a day or two and you'll get used to it. a lot of people play with that ping on indiatimes. that is of course, if you do want to play vq3.

You can fire faster even with a really high ping. That keeps your opponent on his/her toes. So high pingers can now use their weapon with more liberty instead of conserving their shots. Sometimes, servers lag because of a few high pingers on it. NoGhost deals with this problem.

I've played all Q3 mods and I'm not new to VQ3 on CPMA. As long as it's quake, I'd play any mod so it's neither about what do I want to play. I'm just saying, I prefer playing such mods on LAN.

well i don't have a lan scene here so i have no choice. it doesn't make much of a difference for me though. CPMA at 60 ping is perfectly playable for me. almost as good as lan... i don't have to lead shots or anything of that sort.

When did I say Insta unlagged is not playable at 100+? I myself ping 230+ on ESP mallorca server and 177 on Japanese rail server.

of course it is. sure it's not gonna be pretty dueling against a 20 pinger but if you're opponent has something around 60 and you around 100... it's not so bad at all. CTF and stuff is awesome as there's quite a bit you can do that's not heavily ping dependent.

hm, guess it depends on the connection or smthn. on my current connection xerp causes terrible warp so I even find ra3 code much better for higher pings since you can acually use nudge. if I leave turn off all nudge/xerp etc it feels like 200 ping. :X

indian internet is terrible. i find it hard to believe your connection would be worse than mine :) maybe you've got the settings wrong or something? are you playing with defaults?

my connection is actually pretty good, I ping <30 to most german servers and ~60 to everywhere else. The problem is just that kind of xerp/nudge cause terrible warp/jitter which makes the game unplayable. + I cba to wait for games or hang on irc.

It's probably more to do with the fact that they get their ass kicked on the later versions.

i installed the game, and then intalled the 1.16 point release.

another thing about the cd key:
there is a yes/no question when it asks for the cd,
and if click in "no", it exits the game.
if i click in "yes", it returns to the main menu.

what can i do?

restart quake, and when it's kicked you back to the menu, enter :
condump error.txt
then grab error.txt from your Quake 3\baseq3 folder and post it on pastebin.ca or some other online clipboard website.
That'll tell us all that's going on and we might figure out where it's crapping out better.

you have to understand that 99% of quake players on ESR use 1.32 so this might not be the right place to ask. as loveless suggested, try the NoGhost forums as they mostly use 1.16.

check the cfg file(s) if they are protected for overwriting, if you have several mods then delete all cfg(s) in those folders and update cd-key ingame, or manually enter cd-key in each cfg.

Derok,

Try doing this:

1. Do a fresh/clean install of Quake 3.
2. Go to http://q3-die.com/ and get the 1.16n Point release.
3. Install the 1.16n Point release on your Quake 3 installation.
4. Go to www.noghost.net and download the latest NoGhost client build 133.
5. Download and extract the NoGhost client files in the NoGhost folder.
6. Place the NoGhost folder in your Quake 3 directory.

Then,

a) Launch Quake 3
b) Enter your CD key and hit Accept

**If it doesn't validate your key, it means that either your key is already in use or your Quake 3 dump/files is/are corrupt.

c) Once in, try connecting to the following servers with Automatic downloading set to ON:

In your console, type:

/connect railerz.ddo.jp:27960 (you can also try 27961,62)
or
/connect mallorca.noghost.net
or
/connect arc.noghost.net
