I heard from a few different people that "The Basketball Diaries" is a pretty sweet movie that shares quite a lot in common with it. Not seen it myself though.

That's a good film, saw it about 10 years ago. Bit grim though.

Basically it follows the life of dicraprio as he falls into drugs and despair. Also has Mark Wahlberg (spelling?) in it.

Worth watching, if only for the boat scene at the start.

??? did you really just state this or am I seeing things because I've been awake for too fucking long. There are many elements and conventions to a film that can make it good or bad. Just because someone or a mass population (as is this case) enjoys it doesn't mean it actually is a good (or bad) film (or book/music).

Sure you're going to get films with specific genres and themes that you prefer over others and always will but again just because you have a preference doesn't make that film any better or worse than it is regardless how how much you enjoy it.

Horse shit, its not overrated at all, the performances are electric especially the breakout roles and still career bests for McGregor & Carlyle and most of the supporting cast were really good fun to watch too. Fantastic music that felt a part of the film and really entertaining dialog and action.

Along with Mike Leigh's best films I think its one of the best British film of the 90s, I know thats not saying much though.

so I dare say I met more artists and art critics than you. They opinions are of course way more educated than mine, but that doesn't necessarily make it better. And most certainly they could never agree on "conventiions" as you seem to imagine.

sure there are conventions for different styles, e.g. impressionists draw like that. But these conventions get overthrown every so often, so therefore an evaluation based on a set of conventions is only possible if the artist claims to abide by them in the first place.

And seriously you need to rethink your assumptions. My point is that I don't give a flying fuck if you or anyone thinks that movie is good or bad or if it abides by any rules. No. Donnie Darko is a lucky (the pieces formed a very professional and slick film), huge mess, watch Southland Tales you'll see that Darko was above the director's ability. If you examine the meaning of what Donnie Darko's about it's just a weak mess of half-arsed time travel and implied import, scratch the surface of Mulholland drive and there's symbolism that actually means something.

You do realise that Mulholland had a substantial part of its plot (the amnesiatic(sp) woman) ripped from a movie from the 60's yes? I will endeavour to find its name for you.

I do like it, but a friend told me about the other film and it's quite a shame that someone like Lynch would use a tried story before, albiet to great effect. If that is the case, could very well be a case of the same material circulating.

I think Gia shares alot of the themes present in Requiem, focusing instead on a single characters (an awesome, young, and fucking hot Jollie) plunge into drugs, sexual disease and eventual death.

Another movie that tackles substance abuse (alcohol) and is also focused on one persons coping with major life changes and loss is La Vien Rose, the film biograpgy of Edith Piaf. Incredible story, amazing acting, sensational music. I watched it with my girlfriend who is a big fan of her music and subsequently I am now too, it's very moving stuff. Never regret!

anyways what credit you want to give to Lynch matters fuck in terms of how good the movie is in itself. Mullholland dr. is a brilliant film and leagues above the likes of Requiem and almost every other film mentioned in this thread.

As for La Vie en Rose, c'mon behave yourself that film is just poor. Piaf is a legend, that does not mean a film based on her life is automatically good. The screenplay was extremely boring and the apart from Cotillard the acting was embarrassing, especially Depardieu. The make up was good granted (maybe thats a big thing for you).

As you're a major film buff I wanted to ask- what is it that people see in Citizen Cane?

Citizen Kane's choice for not to go for the easy emotional fixes, but rather let the camera be more of an observer made the complete piece powerful, with the memorable ending. I think it owes much of it's praise to being innovative movie at it's time. I kinda liked it, but found the second half weaker and a bit boring to watch.

DD surely was ambiguous and open for interpretation. But saying Darko was easily accesible is like saying GG Allin was a wellmannered gentleman from victorian england.
Imo there's inheretedly hefty amount of refreshing and memorable stuff in this movie which should not be forgotten by concentrating too much on the scifi-tentacles and packaging.

I don't know how to take such a statement. David Lynch's idea of 'depth', should he entertain one, troubles me. The puzzling nature of his movies, which seem to be aimed at the disconnection of images and sounds from their meaning, giving a large array of possibilities, are something I would think feasible for a painter, since the eye likes shapes and colors, which do not necessarily have to reflect anything we've ever seen. In movies, hm, certainly this is something more along the lines of an experimental approach gone mainstream. Take this and David Lynch's unordered and pseudo-philosophical statements he gives in interviews about 'transcendent meditation',and I would not rate the depth of his movies too highly. Depth in a sort of dreamy imaginative way, yes, but it is much more difficult to tell a simple story. He tried that with "The Straight Story", I suppose to prove that he can do it, but that story is mainly carried by the phenomenal acting and photography.

Cannibal Holocaust is an interesting film, it's so far over the edge that it has an impact on the viewer, unlike all this tepid torture porn crap.

Another great film, told in a rather interesting way is Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, came out last year. Has everything, spousal and family betrayal, drugs, murder!

Disturbing ending too.

Although this isn't a similar movie to Requiem For A Dream, I just watched the film Towelhead and thought it was great. The dvdrip came online about a week ago, check it out. There's a lot of controversy surrounding the film due to its subject matter and title.

The movie is not bad but is not the best there is.
Pi and The Fountain are better than this overhyped movie.

I don't agree that Requiem for a Dream is over-hyped but the Fountain is certainly under appreciated, it will gradually gain in popularity and respect as time passes, it's just before its time and its atheist world view is unpalletable for morons.

Pi and Requiem were better than Fountain.

Fountain was stunningly beautiful audiovisually, but I didn't feel as the simultaneous stories about mayas and all that shit really rised the intensity of the whole. The statement about undying love felt like a broken record and could of been more subtle. There's lots of attractive and wonderful bits in this movie to crop out, but at the same time the compilation is bit messy.

It seems to divide people, either the story clicks for you or not. I don't mean you don't understand the story, just that the way it's told is an individual taste. The whole structure does make sense though, I don't see how it is messy. Undying love wasn't really the message, the message is about acceptance of death and its meaning without nonsense religious afterlife answers. A materialist death. First Tom has to accept Izzi's death, then complete the story, Chapter 12, which is his own death.

Maybe I'm mushy softie romantic christian inside, because love occuring in various centuries was what caught my primary attention in this film accompanied with religious symbolism.

The religious symbolism is used meaningfully but in an interpreted way. As a whole the film makes much more sense when you understand the structure- the film is in the future, Spaceman Tom experiencing flashbacks to the present where he's trying to save his wife.

The conquistador is the story his wife wrote as her acceptance of death and she leaves it incomplete as Tom must accept her death as well as his own. Tom can't accept her death, discovers a way to prolong life, the tree (the Tree of Life is the symbol for the fight against death), and lives on for hundreds of years, unable to finish the story. Finally as he's about to die in the Nebula he transcends and understands death as the star finally explodes. The tree in the spacecraft is the one he planted on his wife's grave so contains her physical essence, the eating of the bark is the sacrament implying he worships her.

My different point of view on this issue, as it is written on some blog (in my native language, so sorry for bad translation):

Some ideas:

-the only certain thing is immortality, which translates in the film by the connection between living beings, life and death be just apparencies. The sensible message of the movie is hope.

Well, in my defense I saw slogans like together we will live forever, what if you could live forever? very exclamation markish implifications of very un-scientifically realistic view. I treated all of the instances as actual happenings and incarnations of same two souls. In Buddhism there's the cycle of life and nirvana. He also takes a very peculiar position in the end, accompanied with gaining 'enlightment' after the light ceases to flicker. Some art student told me about some religion and the tree of life and how it makes sense, but I totally don't remember anymore about that angle. In scientific realism people don't live forever, or through various centuries. But anyhow, I accept your explanation and actually like it a whole lot more.

My main concern with this film wasn't err... all that stuff. My feud with this film is more of practical nature. There was just too much 'stuff', like he wanted to forcefully pack all of his wonderful ideas in the same luggage that could barely contain all of them.

The trailers were really bad and probably threw a lot of people.

I think that aside from the beautiful visuals and moving soundtrack, the real gem on the fountains crown is the brilliant screenplay. Seamlessly moving between three seperate universes, while remaining totally cohesive. I agree with ix that it will muture as a classic film with age. Also, Hugh Jackman I think gave his career performance. Beleivable, passionate portrayals of three men, quite amazing.
