Z4 talked a pretty big game a year ago in that GGL interview. He really came off as if he was the best quake player to ever play. I remember him saying something along the lines that czm and cooller never provided unique playstyles of their own/etc and that he changed the game the most.



The fact is that he did OK in 2008. Quakecon barely had any of the huge quake stars and his two 5th place finishes were decent. Still though, he definetly didn;t live up to the hype or the level of badassery that he seemed to imply in that interview.

No1. ZeRo4 - won the most majors by far, and when he didn't win, he usually played the finals. started since the beginning of q3, and *years* after - when he wasn't the best, was *1* frag behind the best. The King.

No2. Cooller - took the term "map control" to another level, brought trashtalk into the game =) 2 ESWCs. To put it simple - a tournament without Cooller is always at least 25% less interesting.

No3. Cypher / Fatal1ty - tough one. Obviously Fatal1ty won more tournaments, you can't compare the game now and then, there are obviously less tournaments now, but for me Cypher is more impressive TODAY than Fatal1ty ever was. Knowing the fact that in today's quake the skill gap between the top... 5 lets say is not so big, Cypher still manages to stand out as a BEAST.

It's called a trend. Cooller had be ahead of the pack with the LG for years. Also, how about Lugia? Do you really want to try to say that he's an exception to the rule? The last major trend was using the RG out of position, and now it's abusing the LG. Due to the shallow nature of the game, we're pretty much out of mechanics to abuse unless someone can manage to pull crazy high PG accuracy.

He's right about the LG thing (Mostly) though.

Cooller came onto the scene and his entire style was based around abusing the LG. Look at some early demos of him and you'll notice how often he rushes with LG compared to his opponents. Aim wasn't quite as good back then so it wasn't as successful though and cooller had to combine strong rocket and tactical play to win still.

That was in 2002/2003 and it's been a "downhill" snowball ride ever since. CPMA exacerbated the situation a bit but OSP wasn't far off that on LAN anyway.

I remember saying that i stopped playing quake4 and someone made an interview and thats pretty much the only time i can remember saying that i "retire", though I might be mistaken. I've come back to play from time to time and then I've stopped. I don't see what is wrong with that. Aren't you suppose to play when you enjoy it and stop when its not fun to play?

I also remember that ~1-2 years ago when quake4 was released, there were a bunch of gaming sites who wrote quake articles. They all wanted traffic and interviews and therefor repetitive and dull interviews with the same people (incl me) popped up. Having mixed feelings about q4 at the time probably made it look as if i was quitting/starting playing again daily like it was my job.
