not everyone is stupid. basiacally it's almost impossible to prove something here, because you haven't seen any people who live in post-ussr and you haven't seen what kind of "news" russians have on tv (which means that everyone in the post-ussr who speaks russian watches those news), what kind of music they listen to. honestly, have you seen a russian movie? all this crap influences us, and it does not matter how intelligent or stupid you are, anyway you start to believe in whatever tv says. and all that is controlled by the government. some people can resist this influence, others can't. we can watch BBC, but it's in english, so nobody watches it, not even professors of english language. in the shops we have only mainstream music, I think it is almost impossible to buy a Sigur Ros CD or something of high quality. anyway, you get the rough idea, right? we are limited and controlled.

Yes your media is heavily controlled, but our media isn't and is still terrible. It pretty much focuses around either lying or celebrity gossip, but when it does get into serious issues they are usually dealt with in a pretty simplistic way.

People don't read foreign news here either, they read whatever newpaper they buy, the BBC or maybe an American website occasionally. Why don't we read foreign news? Because the majority of us can only speak and read English.

We have high quality media available to all. I can go to HMV right now and buy lots of "obscure" music, films or TV programs. That is where the difference ends, people listen/watch/read low quality mainstream media here too and rarely do they venture outside of it.

If anything we're worse than post-USSR here because we have it available to us and yet we (as a country) still ignore it all.

man, u got it all wrong. Get to know what post-USSR means. There's a lot of countries like that, and they're all different. I'm, for example, from Lithuania, and nobody here watches news in Russian, actually mainly only people above 40 years old can speak Russian good enough to enjoy a movie in Russian or something, all the news, newspapers, aren't controlled by anyone but the owners themselves... I could go on on on, its simply not like that and that's it :)

It's an overstatement. One does have a freedom of choice in post USSR. Being illiterate, believing one lie over another or berating one's own country and people with hundreds of years of unique culture and tradition is merely a choice each of us has to make. The fact that your post exists proves this point.

My English isn't perfect, but I certainly wouldn't call myself illiterate, so I think that you can't say "everyone"... Even though sometimes I feel almost ashamed of the English skills some of my friends have :)
