i personally grew up listening to status quo when i was around 3 years old, and played a plastic fake airguitar and slammed the dust out of the couch pillows with a pair of drumsticks to a video tape of their end of the road tour in '84..

if i instead had been into the generic radio music at that age, i probably wouldn't be liking metal today.. so it's as they say, it's an acquired taste which most likely have to be developed..

you can't just turn on the radio and go 'i like this' as you can with todays everyday radio hits.. and if you have not lived to have learned to enjoy metal, whatever, get over yourself..

Metal needs sub-genres. Power metal and Brutal death metal do not sound even remotely similar.

A passing glance at Metal will not gather enough information on this genre or its sub-genres. Metal is much more diverse than mainstream kiddies could ever hope to know. Look at dragonforce, people are raving about them since they heard them from guitar hero. Dragonfarce is laughed at in power metal, because they suck @ live performances and they actually are very mediocre in power metal standards.

when someone posts that many links on some garage bands to prove they're different, you just know that the next thing will sound just like the last, so don't bother clicking.

I still love metal artists like Mastadon, Neurosis , Isis, Sunn 0))) etc. but I no longer put Metal as a more artistic/deeper medium than pop or any other genre (fuck genres anyway)

what i mean is the teen / early 20's thing that a lot of die-hard metallers think Metal is so elite / deeper than anything any other more gentle genre can come up with, its just so full of shit

random example take the pop song Idiot Wind by Bob Dylan, to me it's so much deeper/heavier than any of the Slayer/Carcass/Death/early Sepultura that I worshiped back when and saw live loads of times but I was so narrow minded I wouldn't accept more simpler/subtler/mainstream music could be as if not more deep.

I think it's mostly true of people who try to use their current taste in music to define/label themselves and you get those people everywhere.

Your definition of pop is probably a bit different than mine. By pop I usually presume the popular cheap music for the masses ie. all the rmb boyband shit on mtv. Then again if by pop you mean bands like blur that's a whole different story.

Under any definition however, Bob Dylan is definitely not pop, Beachboys for example could be considered pop of that era.

At the time it was fresh and unique, I always used to thing keyboards were gay but they totally made it work and I had the guitar riff in the end in my head the whole week.

What's really bugging me is that most metalheads I know are so ignorant of EVERY other grene there is except metal. They simply refuse to listen to other things except it.

Most people refuse to listen to any metal too though.

The amount of times I've seen people say "I like all music, except metal" is mind warping.

I'd rather say "I'd listen to anything basically".
The styles I'm keeping away from is crappy hip-hop (although there's good hip-hop aswell) and dance-bands (if they're called that lol).

I'll listen to anything really, it's "all good", you just need to listen to lots to find the good stuff.
