The ESL has by far the best infrastructure of any online leagues out there, the Quake community would really benefit from it, if ESL picks up Quake for their major tournaments.

I really hope ESL Masters (The LAN events) expands and puts in a duel game. Unfortunately, it's unlikely because of the fact that WC3 was replaced for WoW, but I think if you guys had CS/WoW/Q3/WC3 it would be one of the best events in the world. Kind of like the WSVG, except ten times better =)

I doubt it's Quake, ESL wouldn't dare to use a shooter which is basically about killing the other. It's the only league which tries to make eSports and video gaming suitable for society as a whole and most people within our society associate titles such as Quake as pure violence without any sense.

If EPS UK is allowed to make decisions on their own and without interference by the Headquarters, then chances are high that it's gonna be Quake. But I doubt that EPS UK is an independent unit and I doubt the Headquarters would risk a failure in UK which might result in losing important sponsors, especially in times of the financial crisis when every fuckin cent is valueable.

You're right, planting bombs as terrorists brings much more of a good view on Esports.

What else is there to choose as a duel game? Therogue said it's gonna be an FPS. So games like PK, UT, WSW and the likes come to mind. And each of those mentioned are basically about killing each other.

Either way, I think it's gonna be either UT3 or QL.

The new patch + the expansion Epic is working on could make the game active.

Urban Terror = 779 servers, 2842 players

Urban Terror is the only thing giving the game any activity, and it's not really Q3. Let's not forget that bots are counted in Q3, though I am unsure if they are in UT3.

you should add ~1000 QL players to that, since QL = Q3 pretty much

UT3 may have some newbs playing vehicle modes, but I really don't see much activity in the competetive scene (which is the relevant one for the ESL)
Also, UT3 is only little more then a year old and as you know, the activity in games drops with increasing age. :)

1000 players online != 1000 players in-game. When the players in-game goes over 30, you can start even considering it a game.

So, you should be in Europe, how many do you see? Do you really think it's as big as they say? I remember when I first pointed out the lack of users online (let alone playing) and shortly after the counter was removed (and I was banned). Why is it that none of the numbers add up with the huge success story that id is trying to paint?

The US is one of the biggest on searches and hits to QL right now, according to Google. Despite that, it has almost no activity, ESPECIALLY in duel.

As for the ESL and all that, if you look at the activity of the communities, UT3 would be just as valid a choice as Q3.

i see ~75 servers right now with people on it, I set the serverbrowser to "all regions"
I'm pretty sure I still cant see "newbie servers"...

I still check on the UT community sites sometimes (played ut2k4 myself) and its just undeniable that the (competitive) community was very unhappy with UT3 and dropped the game extremely fast.
I really think (even if there was no QL) that Q3 would still attract more players then UT3 for the league (at least in europe, cant speak for UK specifically)

75 servers is quite a bit more than anything I see over here. Peak hours may see 25 servers with players, but several only have 1 or 2 people, and hardly any are full. Also, it doesn't display servers that are too far below your skill? I thought it just told you that it was below you, but maybe that has something to do with it.

I'm in NA and QL is plenty busy, most nights I can see 1000-1200 'online' players, which equates to players in game.

There's plently of people in duel servers, as well as every other mode.

Being in another country means you see different servers, players, and advertisements.

EDIT: Also, it's ridiculous to compare UT3 searches to Quake Live searches. UT3 had mainstream advertisements, it had interviews and commercials on TV, had articles and advertisments on bigger sites like gamespot, 1up, and IGN.

Quake Live has had nothing even close to the marketing and advertising that UT3 has.

If there is some filter that keeps you from seeing newbie servers, that's the only possible way that there could be thousands of players. I'll have to wait until the next batch of invites so I can make a new account and make it lose a lot so I can see this phantom activity that everyone is claiming exists.

Google trends isn't just about searches. It's also about related website activity to the current trend. This means that anyone who searched for UT3, went looking for a patch for UT3, or visited any page related to UT3 (or did multiple of which) pushed those numbers up. You can even use this tool to see what other sites people visited who were searching for a certain trend.

I didn't put Q3 up there to argue about Q3, it was to give you a comparison, as you know how big our community is. Again, the bump in the graph shows where the console market came into play, and it also shows nowhere near the activity that PC pulled alone, so don't even try to use that as an excuse.

All things considered, UT3 didn't have that big of a marketing campaign. More than QL? Sure, but I didn't point to QL in any of the above searches - they were to Q3. QL would fare much, MUCH, worse in the above graphs.

Google trends is not limited to searches. How hard is this? Do you even use Firefox? Just about EVERY site you visit sends your connection info to Google (including Quake Live and ESR) which is part of google trends. It's not about searches - it's about activity in ALL forms. You can even use it to see what the most common OTHER sites people visit when visiting a site. It's an entire spider-like network of information on a "trend." Thus, while not being perfectly accurate, it is a very good tool for getting an idea just how popular something is at any given time.

no blood and the standard for usk ratings changed a lot, today q3 would never get indexed, because the game is totally unrealistic and there are far worse games out that did get a usk 16 rating.

We are really looking forward to do something with quake live, but it will also depend a lot on a cooperation with ID Software and so far that hasn't worked out for us, but we are trying. :/

Tbh if this was INT event quake would be great choice of game But q3 is just a bad choice for the UK look at the last couple of lans quake had ESWC UK 2008 had 3 sign ups which were Garpy, DDK and some random polish dude that if he won couldnt go anyways lol .

also note that Game frontier hosted the lan even phone garpy up to take part hence he turn up. lol

UT does have a bigger uk commuinty and when it gets lans it at least gets players that can be assed to turn up and play regardless if there sponsored or not

Unless ESL Rethink how this competition is done Q3 NO pros allowed i think would be good u get lots of sign ups plus new intrested in games like quake and ut a huge reason why players dont turn up for 1v1 lans is becasue the huge learning curve that dueling games have

if esl use this format of quake with the pros the next season 3 of EPS will not have a duel game as u will get 8 to 12 people signing up everone will say whats the point

EPS is played mostly online, only the finals (usually the top4 players) are played on a LAN event.
The finals have prizemoney for all qualified players, so it would be quite stupid not to attend them.

I think the UK community isnt as tiny as it may seem, they are just scattered over CPMA vq3/cpm, OSP, QL.
So, even if CPMA vq3 may not be your favorite game, just sign up there and play 1 match / week, so you can enjoy QL the next season.

Game Frontier are well known in the UK for having run consistently bad LAN events and the ESWC UK qualifier was held at a terrible time (I know of at least a handful of people who couldn't attend due to exams).

Q4 is a terrible example since barely anyone played it in the first place so why would anyone in the UK Quake scene attend a LAN for a game they don't like when they won't gain anything out of it?

The last CPL Quake tour had many, many problems but interestingly the most attended events were in locations where Q3 is played (Europe) rather than Singapore or Hong Kong or whatever.

Your knowledge of the UK scene is pretty poor to say the least and seems to basically end after the "pro" friend group of players, some of which are barely part of the Q3 UK scene anyway.

Most of the UK Q3 players don't regularly play Duel, but what they do play is lots of TDM/CTF (And QL at the moment). A LAN based Duel event is hardly going to attract a lot of those players but an online event like this could easily get people playing even with "pros" involved.
