phpBB is pretty nice, vBulletin isn't so bad either, ComplexityGaming.com implemented it pretty well into their site. It's nothing AMAZING, but it's decent.

If you just want a completely separate forum, with no article association with the site (like the coL site), then use phpBB. It has a shitload of support and features.

My vote is for phpBB.

Somehow I think you should be worrying more about the database you use, it needs to accommodate large amounts of data.
