Wrong - there are four different hittones, each for a certain band of damage. The damage of the railgun (80-100) is in one band, so the hitsound is always the same for railgun - it doesn't matter if you do 80 damage or 100.

Anyway, I'd like to have the vq3 hitsound for cq3 gameplay. I think it's not fair to know how much damage a spammed rocket/grenade did when you didn't see the hit.

It is fair, because you know how much scream a player made when he was hit. If you shot someone who have AP with single bullet in, it might hurt but if you put a ROCKET into someone's face : that is a real pain ;-]

Railgun has variable damage 'cause the fixed damage is NOT fair. When a railer shoots u with a slug from the end of a map without any counteraction, damage must be weakened. This is why railgun had to be nerfed.
But when u attack a railer within a short range, any weapon becomes imbalanced against such a nerfed railgun. It has the longest reload time and the smallest 'field of harm'. U just wanna railgun to become a camper's weapon. Shaft would become the only powerful weapon in the game.
This is why we have a nerfed railgun, when u shoot far, and the powerful and a bit weakened railgun within a shoft range. This IS fair.

The only another way to solve this problem is to reduce railgun reload time and fix its damage to 80. Like we can find it in QL or CPM. Wouldn't CQ3 become more CPMish?

Some of players say: 'variable' railgun is random, you must know how much damage u hit the enemy. I've got two questions to them. How the hell are u supposed to know the amount of health ur enemy has? Oh yeah, the health thing is random too. And why do u ask to take vq3 hit-tones back in this case? The only good answer is that u got used to ur gameplay and ask devs to change things that prevent u play top.

Variable rail is the most debatable feature, the vast majority of player feedback is that they don't like this one aspect. It's not so much that it's a 'camper's weapon', at 80 damage it's just not a close combat weapon and shouldn't be.

I'm CPM gameplay's design lead so some people pass CQ3 stuff to me. There's no official channel for CQ3 feedback, you would need to contact qrealka or Voulcaine.

you just ask people what they want and it looks like you almost decided to change next cq3 in this way. but grealka does not care about somebodies wishes. when he changed sg from 96 to 112 he said that he dont see any reason to change it back. probably he want intent play testing with whole statistic and real explanation why 112 is too big. i think people like noctis, cymozz need to contact qrealka directly

qrealka does not listen to any 'wish' produced in a categorical ultimate form. Like 'shotgun must be 96, stop playing with things we didn't ask...'
I can see some 'wishes' about CPM like 'Why the hell do you hide seconds in 1v1 mode. I can't play CPM 'cause of that. Fix it! arQon stop ruin Q3...'
110 of shotgun was never too big in VQ3, but it has random field of harm and random harm distance. So it is shit. CQ3 shotgun has the same damage, but it needs decreasing the harm distance not herm itself. Changing any damage makes us change other things like knockback and reload times.
And people like cymozz already contacted us and helped testing CQ3. They don't troll unlike others.

'most debatable feature' does NOT mean the wrong feature at all! And do not put all eggs into one basket. Some of vanilla players, the real hardcore railers, don't play CQ3, because they think that railgun must never be nerfed, they just know it. And some theorists stand against the 'variable' thing itself. They confuse it with the 'random' thing. Of course some players are confused with the numbers and they are against of the variable railgun damage however it does its job and whatever reasons to use it.
But we can remember that the 'variable' railgun has been tested to become the replacement for PM2 railgun in reason to solve the through-whole-map damage problem. And the idea of it had been rejected 'cause of the decreased tempo of a combinative play and the unwarranted damage growth of a simple weapon combination like lg-rg and the simplier spawnkills.
The not good enough feature for CPM perfectly fits the vanilla-based gameplay. The through-whole-map damage problem affected all gameplays. I accentuate that the problem is an easy and far damage without any sane counter damage supposed. If a player couldn't kill a railer with the rocketlauncher in a close combat, it would be a problem with the player's rocket skill and probably the railer's movement. Any weapon is much more powerful against vanilla railgun in a close combat. Always and at all the times the railer's surviving skill against rocketlauncher or shaft was about his moving or more exactly the attacks dodging. These ingame situations were always skillful and awesome performances, non of 'em looked imbalanced.
If u kick this feature out and fix the damage to 80, a player with railgun must become a backer. I mean, if the railgun is the 'ranged action weapon' u will just erase the word 'action' by fixing its damage to 80, it will become just a ranged weapon. U will make a powerful weapon powerful enough only beyond the shaft harm radius.
Lets think about the numbers. Railgun deals 160 damage and rocketlauncher deals 200 damage in 1.6 seconds, 240 and 400 damage in 3.2 seconds. And we should keep in mind the rockets' knockback ability. If a simple mid-ranged combat took place on 'Aerowalk' between 'railgun' guy and 'rocketlauncher' guy, damages would be just equal. But if we placed them at one stage, 'rocketlauncher' would blow all the gibs from other guy's body out. If 'rocketlauncher' had a mid armor, he was able to tank 'railgun' softly in the next 3 seconds period of even more. This means that one player must make +back and second one should tank him without any fears of losing frag. This is unprecedented.
Again, the only other (right?) possible way to make railgun balanced is to make some changes to the weapon switching or weapon reload systems, which are planned already btw.

Some of thoughts are adressed not to u directly, but to people who will read this.

i think everybody agree that now it's right time to listen to all feadback from pro players and make adjustments to cq3 for brining it to eswc. if you will do "changes to the weapon switching or weapon reload systems" it will never happen
if you wanna make cq3 for your own purposes or only for your friends in game you can continue to add new features, "polish" gameplay, improve physics etc. mb you even will surpass PMX. but you need at least clearly declare it to stop inappropriate future whine.

Nobody prevented players to post their ideas or to take part in testing. Most of ur 'pros' say 'I don't care' when we ask them for help.

1.) Railgun is not a close range weapon, if you use it in close range you should lose the fight.

2.) This randomness is more annoying for a guy who is in a fight vs a guy with railgun than the other way around. Let's say you have 95 hp and the opponent has railgun: If you know how much damage the railgun does, you can better decide if you should risk a fight or better get out of it.

i partially agree with you but you can say the same thing about RL and GL splash damage randomness and SG randomness. moreover total quake is very random. but its not a big drawback if average amount of frags in ONE game totally depends on your skill and it depends more on maps and spawnsystem

no. you can survive with 1 hp after RL splash likewise after 95 hp RG shot and such randomness is very similar

This is a quite good example of a 'railgun' situation.
First of all, if u are presenting an easy shot for a railer, u always can preciously guess what damage u will suffer. The precision of it is not a patch on determination of the damage dealt to ur enemy by a hit sound or of the health amount left by a pain sound. Interval of 20 obviously determinable damage against 25 of absolutely undeterminable.
Logically lightning beam size was chosen as the length for the linear reduction of damage. And the farther damage was increased from 75 to 80 later. Almost all of the players know the maps they play with the lightning harm radius. Which position is good enough for ranged shafting and which is not. With this kind of knowledge u can guess what damage u will suffer accordingly to the distance between u and ur enemy.
And u know that after the ranged attack of ur enemy u have got 1.5 seconds to get yourself closer and get him owned. Just the same way u can try to determine the damage dealt by a rocket splash by your eye paying attention that railgun damage decreases 1 time per 40 units (125 milliseconds of a ground running), the rocket splash damage increases 1 time per 1 unit and the rocket splash radius can't ever be measured by eye.
So if u have 95 health left and if u perform an open attack, ur enemy still has some chances to kill u by a single shot, when u get closer within 192 units (quarter of the lightning beam) to him and if he is not dead yet. U have 576 units of advantage. But if u have 90 health left, u must notice that if your enemy is such an (godlike?) idiot to let u get close within 384 units (half of the ligtning beam) or if he just misses his first ranged shot so u are close enough before his second shot, u will be dead. U are still able to burn his ass all the 384 units of your life before his 384 units of your death for 1.5 seconds or even more. But which idiot waits until u reach his radius of a single-shot ownage without knowing how much health u got.
What if railgun damage is fixed to 80. If u have 81 and more health, u won't ever think about 'attack or not to attack' railer. U can easily fly a tank without thoughts at ur enemy, who will try to kill u with his godlike aim in 1.5 seconds or even more, and who will fail.
The difference between fixed and variable damage is concluded in the rejected from whole gameplay opportunity for a railer to dodge attacks and get closer to his enemy looking for better damage. Statistically he will miss his first long ranged shot or the second short ranged shot, this means that he can't kill a tanking 81-health enemy in 3 seconds (or maybe 2 seconds of reload+switching). Probably he would start backing until he could take a good weapon or an armor. If in VQ3 with 100 railgun damage backing is advantageously, in CQ3 with 80 damage u won't have any other way out than backing.
Action ruined.

unless by larger spread you mean super large then:

little improvement at a mid range (where it's a pain already)

hardly any difference long range which is fine it's not a long range weapon anyway

it'll have little effect at in your face distances where it is most annoying yet more damage will be even more of a pain

What about you get points for holding on to a flag? Flag resets to a random either flag base on a map after 1 minute, 30 seconds. So a team has to hold onto flag to achieve points, however, the other team has armor/health regrowth while the other team -- who is holding the flag -- doesn't. Team that is hold the flag has a 2 second respawn time near their teammate with the flag. Other team gets instant respawn with 100 health, 50 armor.

Call the gametype "GORE ARENA" and lets go!

Because movement in q3,ut, wsw etc is 2,5D (not 3D). We can go forward, back, left, right (2D) and push jump, then falling on the ground (0,5D). In future games movement will be 3D. We will walk on walls and ceiling. (no gravity in game physics & in weapons!!!!!)

we tried a cpma vq3 ctf cup at inquake a couple of years ago (2006 afaik) and 2 teams or so signed up (the duelcups with 64 slots were always full and the tdm cup managed to get 16 or 32 teams aswell - now trying to get them to switch from their beloved shitmod from the middle-ages with cq3 which (again needs a working cpma config - which will cause a hell of a lot whine) they probably don't know (damage, cpma's fixed physics) and obviously don't want (if they did they would've switched a couple of years ago)
