FRAG there is a detailed analysis of the movie over at
WinOut. Any documentary which claims in its promotional materials to bring the viewer the "true story of professional video gaming" is billing itself as something quite spectacular indeed.
All the major elements of this documentary go under the microscope from performance enhancing drug use to the difficult nature of gamers' relationships with their parents. The five page analysis comes from a highly critical perspective, breaking down each of the major topics addressed in the documentary and outlining problems the author had with their portray. Ebert & Roeper this ain't!
On every level the documentary wants to be as big and brash as possible where often times a more objective and varied approach would have delivered something closer to the "truth" about pro-gaming. There are some great positives about pro-gaming, few of which get a mention. There are also some really negative things, many of which are gone into but not in specific detail and not with a variety of different perspectives. Instead we get a kind of solid continuity, as though this were a fictional story and not the complex real world we all live in. In 2007 WSVG was the big organization for the duel games these players were playing and yet from this documentary the viewer would not know anything but the CPL existed.
