Late last week there was the Starcraft 2 Q&A batch 49 that was released. Shortly after the release, there was an extremely long list of questions that the community was able to ask both Karune and Cydra about the games development so far.
All of the questions and answers are shown below in their original form, so take your time and enjoy the questions answered.
I don't know why people ask these questions... It's impossible to even put the knowledge to use until we actually get behind the game, and it's likely that things will be almost totally different at launch anyway.
I don't know why you post these replies... It's already obvious that you're gonna be totally pessimistic about whatever it is you're replying to even before you actually read the post, and its likely that no one will read your post and think its worth reading anyway.
You read it, and you don't even like me. Just imagine.
Even still, I'm not pessimistic about everything - but you'd know that if you paid attention to my replies instead of just browsing every other word. I, in fact, am quite the avid supporter of SC.
In this situation, no matter how many values about units they give out, you REALLY have no clue how that will stack up until you play the actual game. These are random assorted community questions, so it's obvious that people were going to ask stupid shit. The time could have been spent better by asking about the ways they are balancing things, and what is and isn't going to be like SCBW.
that's quite a lot of answers, some really nice ones, some other I would like to see different, but it's not my game and possible not best for balance. Keep it up
These changes sound good for the most part, I'm happy to hear they ditched the stupid gas mechanic and no more gas on depletion will be better for depth and the elegance of the game, it's always felt wrong to me to leave 3 probes at your main for gas while everything else has moved away after the minerals ran out.
It's annoying to hear that the Reaver will be in the SP and the editor but not included as a game unit. WANT.
Tasteless brought up the point that it will at least allow a possible SC:BW mod to be made in SC2 with the units in there. No doubt it will also be used in SC2 dota.
It will but tasteless is being naive with those comments, especially about MBS and auto-mine. I tried to contact him about it, if the competitive community is to get things it wants as a competitive standard it has to act now or it'll be forever trapped in mod wars or just ignored and stuck with a shallower game.
Mods can still be big - look at DOTA. I think it still has a chance at surviving as just a mod, but I agree that it hurts the chances. After what Blizzard has been doing with WoW, it's hard not to be somewhat afraid for SC2. =/
DOTA's a retard mod though, not a competitive mod. It's only become competitive due to the community size, it starts out by offering an extremely gimmicky gameplay with newb appeal that a competitive balance mod wont have.
Still, it manages to live along side WC3 akin to CPM living along side VQ3. I would always agree that support directly from the get go for professional standards would be best, but it's going to be up to the community if any mod is adopted. We're likely going to see DOTA players completely migrate to SC2 just for the graphics, so it's not like the community is going to all be playing vanilla SC2 to begin with.
