Not quite on this one - but I intend on getting a generic logitech mouse which looks just like this one and costs a handful less to further bastardize my mx300 and G1 (Logitech Premium Optical Wheel Mouse Black (B58)).
Will post when done - which might take a while if I decide to take the soldering iron to one of the button switches :D
I expect the differences to be the pcb being totally useless apart from the button switches - and having to drill shit into the top in order to recycle either the full top or just the button part (since the 4th button is missing).
Apart from the easy cable, what specifics are you interested in ?
Ok, so I grabbed a black oem pilot-like logitech.. which turned out to be an rx250.
You can't reuse anything from it *as is*.
*The body parts are all slightly different in ways that will prevent you from reusing them without severe dremel action. The bottom has three, smaller screws, two being below the front (oval) feet.
*The mousewheel tilts left and right and has a different assembly, can't reuse it all, but you may be able to salvage the wheel itself, but you'll have to break the plastic assembly around it for that.
The little mousewheel spring is too short and useless.
*The cable is *soldered* to the pcb. Same number of pins though, so you could always reinsert them into the mx's unpluggable connecor, which is going to be annoying to do.
*In the same vein, assuming you can desolder components, you *may* reuse the left/right button switches.
Cable is the easiest part, i frankesteined my mx300 with a 3mt usb cable, not as soft as the original one, but it have been working for some months without the horrible cutted cable issue.
I tried both the krait and salmosa at a shop earlier.
The salmosa has sensibly the same dimensions as the mx300/g1 (see Mahmood's review on GGL Wire : http://wire.ggl.com/2008/10/07/review-razer-salmosa-gaming-mouse/ ) which made me seriously consider it.

I hesitated between the two and almost left the shop with a salmosa.
Due to my palm grip, I went with the krait since the salmosa has a little edge at the back (look at the side view, you'll see what I mean) that would've gotten in the way a bit - and the mousewheel was a bit too stiff while the krait's is more akin to a fresh WMO.
I wouldn't worry about accidentally toggling the salmosa's (huge) buttons by resting on them.
If you have a finger grip, I think you may like the salmosa.
"’m a digital artist and I find the mouse prediction to be a massive irritation.
I want my strokes/curves to be exactly as I intended them - not in increments of perfectly straight horizontal/vertical lines.
This DOES affect the quality of the lines - resulting in a jagged/aliased looking mess.
This DOES affect you in games - subtle movements are mangled by the mouse. Prediction makes a massive difference *especially* if you’re a fingertip style mouse user with high sensitivity (ie. the market this mouse is aimed at.)
Going back to my MS Optical Wheel Mouse 1.1a
Sigh."
The deathadder had this prediction when I bought it. But it's gone now. I don't know what did it, using a registry mouse fix, uninstalling the razer drivers, updating the firmware or a combination of these. I think uninstalling the razer drivers is most likely the thing that fixed it though. The deathadder keeps your dpi/sensitivity settings after you've uninstalled the drivers so it isn't a big deal.
I went to a Krait after years of using a (several) WMO.
However after about half a year of usage, it now frequently double-clicks on just one press on Mouse1 :/ It doesn't affect Quake, but it sure as hell is bitching annyoing in Windows. Anyone else got this?
If its not a known problem I might just buy a new one, if not, I guess its back to good old WMO.
Product Description
RX250 Optical Mouse fulfills basic user needs with features not found in price-competitive products. The familiar, ambidextrous shape has been updated with a new, flatter profile for improved comfort during extended use.
sucks :( the g3 isn't available anymore? or did i misread your post?
salmosa/g9 may be options if you accept changing how you grab the mouse a litte bit.
nah man, it's not that important, i was mainly curious about that rx250 cause its avail everywhere, i actually got a g3 i could use if i wanted to, was mainly interested in having a mouse with the same shape i can use in case my g3 would brake or smth ;)
