co.uk meant nothing while I was in SA. All south african sites I used have co.za (duh) The only site I used (and still use) with co.uk was BBC.

Well, .com is usually used for international sites (Although I know it's practically american). I am not uncomfortable with using different domain endings, if I need to go to a uk site or a italian site and they end in .co.uk or .it, it doesn't matter.

If I was going to a South African site and it ended in co.uk, that would be a bit strange. .com is different as it doesn't really stand for anything.

co.uk, uk might appeal to uk as a country while en germany .de is surfix.. in denmark we have .dk, as russia have .ru.. .com stands iirc for commercial, as .org stands for organization.. surfix ties the domain to some rules, like .dk ties the site to danish law, i believe .org is lawless in some sense.. i don't know about .com but i would suggest that it lies under some international commercial laws, of some sort..

.com and .co.uk have nothing to do with "affixes," suffixes, or prefixes. affix is also a more general word not chiefly concerned with grammatical doings about, if I understanding correctly, but that's beside the point. domain names, and particularly URLs, are not words. they're identifiers of objects, detailing a hierarchy of other objects. in this case, you probably want to say "TLD" or "Top Level Domain."

but there is nothing particularly special about TLDs, and I've no idea why they would inspire "confidence" in anyone; they have nothing to do with a network or its website's content (assuming it has a website), apart from a vague relationship to where that person might be doing his business or what his artistic perception is of TLDs. of course, the TLDs as they are are basically dominated by a few companies here and there, but there's nothing necessarily about them which makes them arbiters of the way their hierarchy, and particularly the internet's DNS hierarchy, is run. the sheer fact that they maintain such a monopoly on the system is one thing. however, when you take into account the idea that ICANN is mulling over allowing private TLD registration, you will see how much this really means for quality assurance or familiarity or whatever it may be that you're attempting to portray. there are already a whole wealth of over gTLDs (generic TLDs) like museum, info, biz, name, and so on, that even some technologically-inclined people aren't too aware of, but this soon may balloon out of control--the question remains whether or not public acceptance will afford their popularity and thus make this question relevant.

what you seem to be more interested in, however, are the ccTLDs (country-code TLDs), which are assigned to a state or government for the purposes of presumably localizing information; it is quite obvious how much that fails. many of these TLDs go virtually unused except for vanity purposes, spammers, "hackers," or domain squatters. of course this is not the case for .uk or .de, for example. but it would seem that most reasonably large, especially international, sites also have region-free counterparts, such as a .com or .org. I think for those sites that most people choose one over the other generally based on language support and possibly internet nearness (latency). but maybe someone who actually prefers some ccTLD over another or a gTLD for "confidence" will correct me.

An .eu means they're retarded and probably gay as your company is registered and operated from a particular european country and europe is not a country so they just want it to look cool that they're so international. You make your german/french/spanish website for general public so make it .de/fr/es and put english as default language and maybe some other language options.

Com is international but with most probability it's American.

Dunno, guess whoever runs it here wants some sort of distinction between them all. the .co part means commercial, we have .gov.uk/.edu.uk/.ac.uk/.org.uk etc.

If you are on about advertising then make sure you have national domains. This has changed with the firefox awesome-bar (awesome!) but in the "old days" there were so many times when I wanted to check out a domain I knew started with foobar2000 but didn't remember if it was .com, .org., .net and trying through them all lead me to two spam sites before finding the correct one. On the other hand it is very easy to remember a .de domain - but only, and that is important - if the content is in German. An English site with a German domain wouldn't make any sense.
