Quake Live is the illusion that id cares about the Quake community, when QL is really just another one of their cash cows. They aren't that busy fixing a game with an old engine that can easily be fixed because they're too busy developing their other three (Rage, Wolfenstein, currently pre-producing or further on Doom 4), much bigger cash cows. Hell, it took them over a year since the announcement of Quake Zero just to contract one good community developer.

With that said, QL can easily fail within a year because of id's general apathy towards "pro gaming." What does this mean? Emphasis on the casual gamer and hardcore gamer as opposed to the competitive gamer, which will translate to shit.

Do you not even remember how ET was free to begin with? ET was a game that got cancelled so late into development that id said, "well, it's almost a finished game. May as well give it out for free." With that said, ET wasn't really a gift in the first place so much as it was id's table scraps.

Anyway, personally Im very happy that id is doing this since its reviving a game thats been dead for years, even though the skill level might or might not be at an all time high the community size have been decreasing for 9 years. I know that many miss all the cpma features, but ones theres priv servers and comp settings I couldnt care less about that stuff, Q3 was great fun back in 99-00 and it might be again if it gets an active scene outside of Poland.

They plan on implementing ads of course, but they've also considered adding a monthly fee for playing QL. Charity indeed.

Makes sense if they do the latter because, well, who's going to pay to keep all the servers up and for the man-hours of work if it gets as popular as id is aiming for it to be? If you're familiar with how MMO's work for instance, an ad alone isn't going to pay for it all alone. I wouldn't be surprised if, and when, they ask people to cough up some dough.

probably not gonna happen... none of the maps is really designed for promode and there's obviously trouble getting the premissions for community maps.
and why in QL? it's not like the promode community is splitt up or anything, you have a pretty perfect mod and a decent number of servers. even if there was promode movement, you'd still be missing most cvars...

only point is bigger playerbase and easier access due to matchmaking/centralised game content downloading. basically same only thing that ql has to offer over q3.

It'd probably come down to a vote in the CPM team were this possible, I would not give permission for this. A better idea would be integrating QL's match making and stats with PMX as an official mod in some capacity.

Edit: and about community splits. PMX is a different game, id are planning on adding ET further down the line if QL succeeds, PMX would be no more a community split than that.

i don't think quake live was ever really an appropriate platform for cpm gameplay, considering how different the goals of the two projects must be.

I'd rather see id just try to make a new game centred around competition, we have CPM for CPM, would you honestly switch to QL just because it had similar movement to CPM? I think that quake live doenst need cpm.. They should just add a little bit more aircontrol to current game and it would be perfect. And with little bit i mean really something far lesser than the one in cpm, it just makes game too fast and unpredictable.

arqon is working on QL so the chances of them adding CPM movement is pretty high once they they've added all the basic stuff first

If you look at the "basic stuff" that ID have added (pointless rewards and webstats) before even having a timeout command I find it extremely unlikely that QL is in any way intended as a competitive platform.

I've seen numerous time the whining about the lack of timeout : isn't it obvious why id doesn't want to give away to the public crowd a option to pause the game ?

ql isn't a competitive platform, at least in its vanilla form it isn't intended to be one, and this from day one
maybe id will give organisation such as eswc a custom version of ql (lan capability + timeouts features and what not), but I guess that's about as far as it will go ; nothing for the public. anyway the guys from the competition scene complaining about it have other similar games with all the features they need or could even make a carbon copy of ql or whatever

Do you guys never read anything about QL before talking about it like its facts? Comp settings will be available on private servers, which you will have to pay ~5$/month for, you dont have to pay to play on those servers though, you pay for the ability to host them through id.

They didn't hire arqon for his views on gameplay design, they hired him because he has a lot of experience with Q3 and fixed some of the biggest bugs in it. I'd genuinely be shocked if they added CPM or any other gameplay to QL.
