Does anyone have any idea if Private Servers would be available for QL in near future? Given the fact that the Asia-Pacific region is still stuck with the high pinging US servers and the players have to play practice matches or spectate.
Umm if they don't have private servers, how are the guys at pro level able to compete against each other, Zero4 vs Cypher for instance? I don't quite know what they're currently using for pro tourneys.
Yep but it wasn't a remote server for sure. Which means that they do have the private servers but are using them just for professional and league matches and haven't released them to the general public yet.
actually i believe they have stated that private servers will work a little differently than the traditional model.
instead of renting a physical box in a fixed location it will be dynamically allocated. so you will be able to choose where you want it hosted at a given moment in time, which could help with establishing neutral pings in pcws. it will also be private when you need it but added into the public pool of servers when you don't (still not sure how that will work).
that's what i've read so far, info might have changed since then.
Ye that's likely. But I don't think that's what cyn1c meant when he asked for private servers. :-) Anyway if ID wont release the game for LAN (with no XMPP authentication) someone else probably will.
hopefully once private servers themselves are brought out there will be the possibility for creating LAN games. they've kept pretty quiet on that front though afaik.
When I say private server, I don't mean renting one from ID as the ggl is doing. I mean private servers the same way we had with quake I-IV. One exempt from xmpp authentication and one that you can broadcast locally.
As far as I've noticed, ID has been very unclear in regards to what exactly their plan is with the servers. If you're planning an event next summer, has id given any clarification that you even can or how much problem it'll be?
Obviously iceland isn't on high on the to do list, it's not even on the list. We only have a handful countries as it is; in europe there's UK, DE, NL and FR. Next in line apparently we have Spain, Japan and China. So instead of supporting their already huge numbers of users from scandinavia, south-africa, russia, poland and south-america, they're in some long-term asia plan + one more mainland with Spain.
Are we doomed to $ ISP run standardized servers in populated countries? Maybe I missed the announcement but I've never seen anyone from ID talk about what to expect. Which is unfortunate and dumb on their part.
Btw, I was talking to Maverick the other day, the guy who coded the NoGhost mod for Q3 1.16n (Instagib CTF, freezetag etc.) about any plans to work on a QL mod but looks like the game's not mod friendly at all.
