While it was probably the best run competition, it clearly wasn't making any real money from anywhere other than sponsors. So in reality it was riding on the back of the economic growth of seperate industries.

Sponsors and NSO fees yes, small amount on ticket sales during the event, but its almost guaranteed that all of this went to administrative fees.

Partially right IMO - but it's not zero-sum... I think it's really a combination of both. Being a player yourself and being involved with the games community/culture (heros and sagas) it will obviously help drive your interest to spec, but without any personal interest it's hopeless. While I believe that most people are players that just want to watch and learn (self development, improving your gameplay etc) - I've watched plenty of games/mods that I've never played or enjoyed myself just because I put a bet on it or smth similar... there just has to be something in it for the viewer.

watching games also tends to serve as a motivator for others to play as well..you might not have played q3 in years but if czm and cooller are in good shape and you happen to tune into it....everyone can appreciate their match and 99% will get the itch to play a bit themselves afterwards..... I have no idea where I'm going anymore and if I had anything to contribute I've probably done it by now, so I'll stop.

I haven't played Quake for more than a year, but I watched all of its world tournaments and followed the scene closely. I don't mind watching gaming competitions from skilled players even if I don't participate. It felt no different than watching a real sports game, except it was always action packed and was close to community.

Yes, I'm the same way. As (former?) players, #1 its pure entertainment for us...we don't need it to be anything else....and #2 you obviously value the fact that you've been able to follow much of the games history/past and want to continue collecting knowledge of happenings/events...

We have a pro that does not whine about progaming and it's future, but spreads a belief in it and encourages others to have a sober outlook. This community needs a leader that is not some 16 year old kid that promises to retire when he finishes high-school, but someone who promotes confidence in investing one's passion into gaming. I'm not talking about necessarily going pro, but simply to provide support and positivity on any level. DKT is doing it right.

Next step is to see someone like that to pair up with an entrepreneur-or-two and get a solid sponsor to develop a solid competitive gaming establishment.

I'm hopeful that your description of him is accurate now (maybe settling down has softened some of his edges) and I don't know the guy on a personal level - I'm sure he's a stand-up dude in "RL"...they almost always are... From what I've seen in the past though, hes always came off as a really abrasive person in public servers/online (hardly reflective of the glowing profile you have seemingly afforded him.)
