I disagree. If someone still has a "high priority" to play Quake and to win tournaments, they would still play. In CZM's case, he's a PhD student at Princeton and probably has a lot more important things to be doing with his time (and his spare time) than worrying about Q3. This, in my opinion, shows that Q3 is a very low priority for czm.
I bet the same case is true for Blue, Lakerman, etc.
i more than agree with czm, he alone said that he didnt have time to practice enough, but that quote is from the tournament itself. czm easily beat jibo 2:0 if you remember, t4 and ztn, and didnt look rusty at all.
i doubt anything would change if he had practiced 24/7 the whole summer. cypher would destroy him anyway.
