The Project Natal looks like something that works great on paper, and in real life works horribly.

I watched the video, there's going to be a TON of issues with that. Height, lighting, everything. I mean, the Wii fucks up around Christmas lights, and the Wii seems like nothing compared to what this wants to do.

Using Fables idea of using facial expressions via the D-Pad you could actually make the expressions yourself and these would affect how NPC's interact with you.

-movement in 3d space is impossible to make natural only with the camera thingy
-you'd need to slow the games way down
-i don't know how it's implemented but it's a safe bet that at most the camera sees a 2d plane with realtime depth information

there's definitely lot's of possibilities for pretty creative stuff, but other than maybe for some kind of weird rts and "sports", the thing is pretty much useles for real game genres afaics.

Indeed, you can't get 3D data unless you use at least 2 cameras. Just to do the image segmentation (the process to identify what is background and what isn't) with an invariant space (it makes the segmentation inmune to lighting and background changes, and it eliminates shadows) at a very high end PC you need 6 ms per frame. And it needs some time to adapt to the changes.

Then there is the skeleton 3D tracking, I won't go into details but you need to do a lot of operations with big matrices, just to do it with one person. I find the whole family in the sofa while playing racing games scene a little unbelieable.

And then the voice recognition and tracking, I'm not much into it but it requires some very decent DSPs.

And then the graphics and sound of the game itself...

yea, i'm guessing they have some kind of very rough guess based system. for example skeleton of 11 points whose positions are guesses based on color and depth data (+previous position). i'm guessing the accuracy of the guesses is pretty close to the accuracy of the nintendo wii controller (probably a lot worse depending on how ideal the conditions are. i remember in the microsoft press conference when some dude tried to control the avatar at the beginning of the demo the result was very bugged).

on another note, i just watched the e3 sony press conference and their dildo thingies were totally awesome! >link< (starts around 1:18:00)

Voice recognition is not perfect, and what are you talking about movement. How long ago vioce recogintion was implemented? Still i can't dictate to computer my text without editing it afterwards. And movement, like lab experiment it's ok. But real world apps no way.

Still, while these superinteractive games might be cool and all... I can never find the right remote, would be kinda neat using this kind of technology for say a remote control of your tv and devices. It will probably be the first time something like this worked very well, even stuff like fingerprint technology with a direct scanner is inaccurate as it is now :s

They are far to exaggerated, the second video from the OP also seems scripted. By the looks of things this just seems like a M$ version of EyeToy with false promises of more useful technology.
