agree, streaming just sucks. especially if you are on a slow line / slow PC (flash video fullscreen = 100%$ CPU usage, "even" on my 2,7 ghz celeron)

The problem is not much the slow pc. For HD video, a video card that handles it makes a lot of difference. I watch that video with HD enable at full screen (and my resolution is 1680x1050) with less then 20% cpu load, thanks to the video card...

let's see:

a captured demo to be used for streaming usually results in the following:

lack of games to watch
a fixed config that is usually terrible
horrible motion and often pixelated
a terrible hud
poor visibility, resolution and quality in general
large file sizes
a fair amount of effort for the uploaded
a fixed pov (granted you're screwed either way for older demos)
each video will probably vary in quality and appearance
and so on...

how big is 15 minuets of footage for youtube? especially the "HQ/HD" stuff? a collection of games probably pushes the size of the q3 client anyway... which is absolute peanuts compared to what the average person downloads... let alone a possible streamlined q3 package just for demo playback (not sure if it possible in general though)

so, yes, my original point, streaming is still inferior to demo playback by a fucking landslide.

except that with stream you don't need to install anything else, and you can watch it anywhere, anytime, and you can BROWSE through the demo timeline as you want, back and forth.

Plus, on youtube comments (or even the description) you can talk about a particular time in the video and what happened, then you click it and it goes right there, to the exact second (one of the best things youtube did btw)

Except basically youtube comments are pretty much just a bunch of morons calling each other fags and niggers.

So you want to do a direct comparison?

If you want to watch a demo, you have to:
1) Be an active Q3 player/Have Q3/CPMA installed.
2) Be at home (to be near a machine with Q3 installed)
3) Have fifteen to twenty minutes to spare to watch the entire demo from beginning to end with no pause or rewind.

Yeah, I won't deny that if you come down to bare features, Demos > YouTube, but you have to fulfill all 3 of those conditions before it really becomes viable.

But if I want to watch a match via YouTube:
1) Anyone
2) Anywhere
3) Any time
4) At YOUR leisure (you can pause, rewind, fast-forward, etc.)

I think you can pause and FF in CPMA

I wouldn't know 100%, I still forget from time to time how to get demos to even work, which is another thing YouTube has up on them.

I know I never would have taken up starcraft if I didn't have access to VODs, even with crazy koreans shouting in the background annoying the hell out of me. I figure if you manage to draw in even 2 new people per vid, then it's worth whatever effort had to be put in.

I guess it's just the dream of hanging on to an old, dying game for a few more years, but you can't blame anyone for that. :)

vods are better spec wise for rts like games thank to the absence of povs. switching between two players in an rts game is no where near annoying as doing it in FPS game.

i didn't mean to say the videos are bad as such they obviously are beneficial but they're still far behind an actual demo

take a page from the qw book, they laugh at you if you ask for video recording, it's just far easier to download a client

how big are these video files on youtube? wouldn't surprises me if 5 of them are pushing on the size, if not greater than that of fresh q3 install... an extra few for CPMA

this is one classic game, still can remember socrates_ coming out of tele and pwning fatal1ty with rocket fresh off the spawn, one of the best moments of quake.

Definitely the game I'll remember socrates for as a player.
He also had a crazy Pro-t4 game vs cooller where he hit like 5-6 rails in a row to win the game in OT despite stupid odds.

One of the few Quake 3 players who had a bit of magic to their game IMO.

The last 10 seconds i think of the game he landed 4 rails in a row. I'm sure it was 5, its just the last 4 were virtually straight after the other but the other one was only a few second earlier over the other side of the map.

Finished him off by the plasma. Its worth a watch.
