It's not a Greek dish or a Turkish dish it is an Eastern Mediterranean dish (By which I mainly mean Greece, Cyprus and Turkey) since they all share essentially the same history more or less.

The origins of the names used for the dish are usually Turkish for the same reason that in England we use Old French words for meat (beef/mutton/poultry et cetera).

I just googled the term with "Greek restaurant" and apparantly the definitions for kebap / gyros differ from England and here (the words are written the same. though)
Here kebap is strictly Turkish, while Gyros is strictly Greek.
Ordering a Kebap at a Greek restaurant is like ordering Chicken Mcnuggets at a Burger King.

On top of that we have a Turkish intern here at the company, atm and he assured me Kebap is stricly Turkish.

Point stand that only because English people call it something it doesn't mean that the actually nationalities call it that...

Firstly, from that link about Greek kebabs is the Souvlaki which sounds strangely familiar (Read the first two paragraphs at least).

I don't have the menu at hand, but there is a greek restaurant (not fast food) about 10minutes from me that serves all this sort of food (I can't remember what names they used obviously).

But basically, the names are interchangable, obviously you wouldn't use the Greek word when the shop is using the Turkish words or is clearly a Turkish run place and vice versa (But Shish is acceptable).

When looking at the origins of words you've got to look at the historical context. The terms are first known from the Medieval period and it should come as no coincidence that during that period the Ottomans were in control of Greece.

All, I have been saying the last few posts is that yes, in the UK the terms are interchangable (still a little doubtful about the shish, but whatever). However they are not in Germany.

And regarding the missing Greek wiki for "kebap" I'd say there can be reasonable doubt that people in Greece call it Kebap.

We have as you a said more Turkish (1,713,551) than Greek (294,891) immigrants. Both communities have beenb around for a long time (though not in that size). Couldn't find any numbers for England in a hurry.
Still I'll assume that you have both less Turks and considerable less Greeks. (tell me if that's wrong!)

So I'll propose this interpretation.

The Turkish community in England is so much bigger than the Greeks that they dominated the term for skewered meat and the Greek restaurants accepted it as their own. Note: It's always easier to serve and sell something people know and like, than to introduce something new.
On the other hand the Greek and Turkish population in Germany are big enough to both use their own terms.

So it's a little similar to the fact that a lot of Chinese restaurants in Germany are run by Vietnamese.

If you read the wikipedia page on Souvlaki it does say that in some regions the term Shish Kebab is used. This seems to back up my experiences with Greek restaurants and Greek people here, but feel free to ignore it because it's wikipedia.

I wouldn't go to Belgium or France and calls fries "French" since the dish is not known as that in either country, they both use pommes frites from my experience and it's only Americans who use the term French Fries. British chips are similar but made differently (Thicker, less crunchy, fluffly on the inside) so I'd use that term if I wanted that and Fries if I wanted pommes frites.

The situation in the UK is the same as in Germany with regards to the Turkish and Greek populations.

I'll not ignore it because it's wikipedia but because it's the English wikipedia. Well, ignore isn't really the right term, more like "not believe it right away".
