I'm considering him, I'm jsut worried that because he was strong in ST, everyone good used him, so I think I would have a big disadvantage when it came to those people.

But yeah, I'm sure he's a nightmare, as are most characters who's game revolves around sheer attack or defense.

I would still prefer to look into someone with new gameplay strats though as its a big help if the opponent does not have years worth of understanding.

I'd say Blanka, only because I rarely see Blanka players at high level of competition, he's been buffed since Turbo, and he's still a decent character which you can play aggressive with. Unofrtunately he's been buffed defensively, as his bite attack does less damage now (Go into it with a jump, low kick, med punch combo).

Well, any character who is stuck with the "hold key for two seconds then press x"-moves tends to be gimped at high level play, since their moves are too slow to execute when you need them.

Balrog can silently buffer/charge his charge punch WHILE playing almost normally and release it instantly. (unless its been changed in sf4)

So its not really a charge move in the traditional sense.
it is, but the gameplay restrictions that paladia are talking about with regards to that are lifted for balrog if you are competent enough to play while buffering. Its pretty useless otherwise.

That's obviously not the same thing as chrage characters as in those who require directional inputs.

I'm not sure about the electric move, but what about ball attacks? If you're falling from the air, you can charge it and execute it when it's ready, when you hit the ground. Right?

I have no sf4 expereince, but by charge do you mean charge as is USING the joystick (like when you do a sonic boom), or charge as in simply holding down the 2 or 3 buttons and releasing it (like boxers charge punch in the old/present? version)

Because if you do those are totally seperate things or they've made some mad changes to blanka that I'm not aware of which is possible.

He means charge as in just hold down 2 or 3 buttons then release it, without the aid of charging back with the stick. Very few characters have this ability, but like I said, Balrog does, but it can be concealed so it does not have the flaws of how most new players would use it. I.E.
just holding down the buttons while staying still.

Yeah I just got the leaked version, first time playing street fighter (except when I was young a long time ago). I chose Blanka and I was trying to learn all of his moves, but its quite hard to ever do the roll. I'm just going to try all the characters out and see which I like. So far I like Blanka other than the roll move.

Although common, Ken fits the bill of being the flashy type of combo whore. You might like Viper, she's a pretty solid character to play. Or you could just suck it up and play as Dan.

UNless you're a pro, there is only so much a good ken will take you before the old schoolers will just know every situation.

A good pro is going to know how to how to counter just about every character in just about every situation as it is. So just picking a player that is not commonly used is not going to really do all that much for you in the long run imho. Honestly I think you should use whoever fits your personal style best because it will be easier to learn and master them.

Ryu is essentially unchanged from day one, and I realise he's solid, but the problem with that is there are just so many good players out there and so many people know his exact tactics.
I know how to play VS Ryu, I been doing so for years, so its in my interest to pick someone they dont know as well.

Its like playing quakelive, you're never gonna come close to beating the top duellers on maps they've played for 10 years.
Despite how close you might be to them in terms of raw skill.

So picking a new character is essentially like FORCING a new map/weapon into the pool. Using ryu ken is like calling ZTN and DM6. You ain't gonna fool anyone worth taking a game from.

I'm looking for an edge as I won't be investing crazy hours as I'm not a teenager anymore. But neither do I want to be losing to teenagers either.

Haven't played as him yet. All I know is that he's somewhat of a joke in the series.

You are right about that, and he still is. But now he's actually better than some of the other characters! And no other characters dashes as hilarious or have such an awsome finish of their ultra. ^^

I'd say Viper will suit your style of play. ALOT of combo choices and you pretty much have to play her offensive in most matchups. She also looks damn flashy when you have your game down.
"Preferably someone who has some new mechanics so the style of play is not played out", although this sentence makes me think Abel will make you smile while playing since he dosn't really play like any other character. It feels so awsome when you get the roll in on your opponent and then pull off a nice combo ending with a tornado throw.

About training mode; SF4 has the best training mode around. It also features a new Trial mode where the goal is to pull off most combos there is in the game. I would suggest you look that up on youtube to see what it is. You may also see what character you may like from watching those videos.

Yeah, had my eye on her she seems like she could be effective, atm I'm thinking Viper, Abel and El Fuerte. Possibly Rose as a dark horse as I rememebr she was a mind fuck in Alpha one.

Shame about Vega, its was one of my fav character designs, but I agree he looks weak (which could well mean he's actually really good) and I doubt his BS wall dives work like they do in Super Turbo and he was always quite boring to play as IMO.

El Fuerte... I'm not really sure what I think of him. For me, he's just to hard to play with. You have to have a real special play style to be effective with him. It feels like he lacks against to many of the other characters though. I guess you will see for yourself when you play. =)

Uhhh no one is mentioning Ryu? Ryu is solid as fuck and his ultra and super combos pwn. Not to mention you can pull off his combos and EX chains consistantly. On my friends 360 with the arcade pads I pwn with Ryu.

But playing a new character wont give you any advantages because everyone at a high level or even mid-high level will know all the matches ups inside and out.

You do realise my entire stint in tihe game industry was based on being almost godly at beat em up, to the point where the above devs employed me.

From there, got to test some great games, worked as Designer on the sequel to GoldenEye (got me a bafta, trips to LA), earned a few 100k by 24 and now have a career and skill set that should last me for life and I'm in charge of it.

I got into design when I was 19-20, up until then i tested all the games, which averaged 2.5 million sales, and got royalties on all of them, small, but definitely made testers at that place v well paid, especially across 10 games or so. 30k was easily achieved. Its not like that anymore though.

I do more than Arc Viz. Its simple, my passion for 3D graphics overtook my passion for games and when I could not get a visa for my job offer in the USA I had to change sectors.

Ah right, I mean I got about 45 mins of sf 4 under me atm, I got to be honest, I'm totally lost. I just don't get the game atm, but I know it will soon click once I read a guide. Do a flash kick with two buttons it hits twice?

I think if I spent an hour or so a day just learning ryu I could be in decent shape for a tourney like that using age old strats, plenty of zoning, controlling screen space, ryu strikes me as someone I would do the best with in such a short period of time (and its all basics at high level) as he's timeless. But at the same time, my ryu will NEVER have an edge that someone new will give me (would I need an edge at that tourney?), but at the same time, someone new will require longer to get up to speed. So its a catch 22 at least witih that time span and investment I can put it. I might go, if the SF tourney started and finished in a single day I think it would encourage me a lot more and problably attract some good people.

I kinda' intend on going to Super Vs Battle though (http://supervsbattle.com/) in London to play HDREMIX and possibly SF4 in SEP, but I know what a mecca game SF4 is is in London, I just think it would be suicide in that environment, some crazy ass players in those arcades who do live for these games.
I just don't see the point in even trying there.

I have not played HD remix at all, but I know a fair bit about the coin op (and how i do vs top players-I'm not scared) so I think I could get up to scratch really quick on that over a weekened, and if anything it would suit me over the coin op as I only play DJ on this pad (not played for a while now cos this pad needs replacing but will do for SF4), and I believe a lot of the top tiers (Balrog/Claw Sagat?) have been weakened so I'm pretty sure I'll play some ST there as there will be the best in Europe there.

To summarise, I'll play a few games of sf 4 online when it comes out officially on the pc, try and get some games with some of the better known players and just see how it looks.

First thing, new pad tomorrow, this one been buggered since Marm was gonna leave it as it was GGPO and ST, but I would love SF4 to be the game I play for a few hours a week.

Ryu is really good in the game, because he can easily set up an ultra combo after dragon punches. John Choi got second place at Devastation with Ryu after only playing casually for a month.

Who's the best out of Akuma/Ryu/Ken?

Ryu is probably the best overall, but it depends which playingstyle you're using. Ryu is a more defensive minded character than both Ken and Akuma.

Ryu. His ultra is one of the best in the game because of the million set up possibilities. He hasn't been this strong in an SF game since ST.

You just can't use the turbo. There are lights that turn on when you use turbo, so it's pretty easy to spot.
