Yes I did! But we pretty much don't know anything about the things ID are doing and working on, I'm sure they have there reasons why they haven't release Linux and Mac support yet..
maybe they already have finish it but they are waiting for Quakecon or something and will release it after I don't know.

ID's Unix support is in an early alpha stage since may. so it IS already running..ye! =(

This guy needed like 2 weeks of his sparetime to have (basic) support while ID has a specialist for this purpose who was able to accomplish the same in like 5 month of paid work.

All this guy wants to show is that it is NOT that hard to make a QuakeLive like game and it doesn't require months of "full time" work. And what's wrong with having alternatives ?

I just tried ArenaLive and the first thing to notice is a constant framerate ! No PB crap lags etc...
Then Open Arena has bad maps and is not "pro" oriented (so is QuakeLive ...) it's like a "classic" baseq3.
At the moment it is not as developped as QuakeLive (game and website) but it runs well and fast.
If the main developpers believe in their project and keep developping it, it can become something nice.

Unlike the opensource community, id cannot base the changes upon ioquake3. The ioq3 codebase has many changes to bring linux support up to date which will be required for QL (that is practically all ioq3 is, after all!)

This fact alone makes the whole "proof" that id are slow bogus.

Plus of course ioq3/oa doesn't have any of the QL changes, which of course are not necessarily portable, or may not work first time - such as QL uses some OGL 2.0 features unlike ioq3/OA, and the whole web integration thing is probably fairly significant (AFAIK, it loads the plugin even for the serverbrowser etc).

Having come across this coder before and never had a good impression of him, I'm not surprised he came over so raged.

Quake 3 is C/C++ based, same as XMPP library used by QL so there is no problem. Firefox shouldn't be a problem too - plugins are portable. Web integration is for granted - jQuery and other libraries are 100% portable too.

Only problems I can see with QL on linux is Punkbuster which should be runned with administrator privilliges. Maybe it has changed so it's not necessary now, but I think it's one and only reason that takes so much time.

Driver compatibility / capability is usually a big problem under linux. Its entirely possible that using the default settings (r_enablePostProcess 1), performance is shitty under linux. The use of occlusion queries is probably significant too - I know that even under Windows these have caused some driver issues (eg with intel gfx cards). And yes, occlusion queries are used in QL but not ioq3.

So? I've spent the last 6 months porting "C/C++ based" code to Linux. Just because its C/C++ doesn't mean it automatically works. Yes, the Q3 code is already linux capable, but not necessarily QL.

For example ioq3 has been changed to use SDL for many things that in the old q3 base use different interfaces which are no longer preferred. These days, nobody wants you to go directly to ALSA / OSS for sound, or direct to X11 or /dev/mouse for mouse input, and so the "right" thing is to port it to SDL. Of course, ioq3 did this some time ago (and along the way, pissed off most posters here by "breaking" mouse input under windows and then had to bugfix SDL to resolve these issues).

Well, you assume that whoever wrote the interface code to XMPP wrote it in a portable way. If they didn't, someone will have to go through and make it portable. This obviously isnt an issue for anyone simply wrapping ioq3 in a FF plugin, since they don't have XMPP to worry about.

Yes, PB presumably changes the installation process significantly from an ioq3 based plugin, again proving that just because its easy to wrap ioq3 in a web plugin, its not necessarily easy to get the whole of QL working the way it wants.

Not really. That highly depends on the video driver. I even get more FPS in Q3 on Linux than on Windows. IOQ3, Doom3, Prey and all that stuff works fine too. I'm using the nvidia-drivers. The common non-free video drivers like fglrx or nvidia-drivers are able to handle the game just fine. The nvidia guys even have some OGL 3.0 beta drivers released already, so your OGL 2.0 talking is invalid. No one plays games like Q3 with open source grapic drivers under linux anyways, some may work though (those with 3d accel).

Talk to icculus and get the important stuff from ioq3 in QL.

Na, ioq3 is not written by 1 person (for example, I've got code changes in the ioq3 source tree), and nobody has permission to re-licence it back to id.

I guess I shouldn't write such long sentences. I didn't say it is bad, I just said that its quite possible that it is, when using the QL default options / rendering path. This does not relate to ioq3, and is my fundamental point. ioq3 was easy to port into in a browser plugin. Wow. Great. Amazing. However that tells you absolutely nothing about how easy it is to port QL, or how well that will work.

Then wtf was id thinking when they added that garbage to quakelive? Hey, It was supposed to be very compatible and quickly done!!! But here we are, letting the fad go away without linux/mac ports due to adding gimmick gfx effects? What about releasing the vanilla version quickly in every platform, then adding the flashy stuff when its ready for every platform, too.

One thing it does is make gamma work in windowed mode without all other windows going overbright(esp the firefox window itself).

I believe another thing it is used for is to make brightskins brighter in lightmap mode.

You should answer more frequently here or on QL. We're in lack of detailed technical responses.

Quake (the official one) has a Linux build, it's like the official windows one just the inputs are crappy (like on windows...) and the sound too (but just for linux).
QL (then windows build) didn't change anything about that. The other features from ioQ3 aren't vital but very usefull and they are not in QL and I don't think it's planned.
There hasn't been a lot of work on the QL client from pr1.32 just an updated renderer and some minor tweaks.

There are a lot of issues that needs fixing other than just porting it over, they need to make it easy to maintain and update, make sure it supports the exact same features as the Windows version etc etc

I doubt it's top priority for id either, the game is technically still in beta and it's easier to update one platform at a time (eg just Windows for now). And if I can take a wild guess, they probably want to release Mac and Linux support at the same time. If anything the Mac support might be a bit trickier.

Mac and Linux uses the same system/kernel interfaces (both OS are POSIX compliant), some différences may come on how to get the opengl context and maybe some other minor stuffs but there shouldn't be a lot of differences.
