Sure, if there was tournaments for PK, I'd play it. I think a lot of people need something refreshing after a while. Some people can play Quake 3 for 10 years, some can't.

We should just be playing a game that has the competition, but is well suited for competitive play. I think once ID allows LAN servers, more tournaments will pick it up.

I was thinking of something more near term. Id seem to take 4-5 years to develop a game these days with Rage already in development for a long time and still not coming out until 2010-2011. If Quake 5 is being made, which hasn't been confirmed, we probably wouldn't be seeing it for quite some time to come. Even if it is announced Id's decade long drought of quality leaves me concerned whether they can actually deliver a decent game.

Like you say, we need a game with a large community and competition and that's my concern about Painkiller: Resurrection and Dreamkiller - I can't see a huge number of people playing them. I'm going to give them a go but may end up sitting on the server on my own.

People Can Fly's game has more of a chance of taking off since they've got a past record of quality and a big publisher like EA. Unfortunately there's no word of what the game is or when it's coming out.

All I play these days is Quakeworld but the community is so small I mostly play against the bots, which is fun because the bots are so impressively programmed, but doesn't have the same thrill as playing a human oppononet. I want a new duel game now!

It's quakeworld's annual summer-break. Give it a month. :(

I had similar thoughts. Unfortunately there is no interesting duel game on horizon (and I had thought so before they made QL available to play) and I am afraid it won't change anytime soon :(

Madness! SF4 is the CounterStrike of fighting games compared to Tekken being the Quake. Tekken has infinitely more depth and a much higher skill ceiling and is the game of choice for serious players. SF4 on the other hand is the low-brow, mass market game for the more casual player.

SF4 has a much larger player base than Tekken but that's to be expected for a low skill game, just like COD4, Halo and CS have a much larger player base than Quake. The mass market gamers don't like high skill games which is why Tekken remains more of a niche game like Quake. For the serous playing willing to invest considerable time and money in the game Tekken is the only choice and whenever I go into the London Trocodero I always find that there's crowd of people queuing to challenge each other on Tekken 6 while the SF4 machines sit unused. In Japan there's an arcade exclusively dedicated to Tekken where serous players can go to challenge each other.

Of course the problem with Tekken the timing requirements for execution of moves like counters and sidesteps mean that the game doesn't work on line at all as the lag makes it unplayable. Latency effects Tekken even more than it does Quake and most serious players think it's unplayable even with input lag of a low quality monitor. It's a shame because I might have started playing Tekken more regularly but it simply doesn't work when there's any lag.

Just because a game is easy to learn, it doesn't make it less skilled. It's not exactly easy to win a tournament in Counter-strike, it takes times and skills and the same with chess or go, it takes 2 minutes to learn but forever to master..

I agree with the part that CS takes "forever to master", but the problem is, every game does. The important thing here is how high ceilings of different skills are, and here, I have to say, CS caps the skill in so many more ways than quake/starcraft does.

I would disagree and say that difference in skill at some point only will be displayed when you are supported by similar skill from teammates.

Its a teamgame and because of that you will be limited by that. There are so many variables and restrictions that caps your performance. Dispite what you are able to see a player can have so much more skill and potential than what comes to show. Of that its easier to conclude that the skill depth in a dueller is higher as the skill is more obvious to the eye, but i wouldnt say that it is true.

Again its a team game and hard even to compare with Quake or Starcraft imo.

you don't need to limit personal skill to achieve teamplay. Obviously, low skill ceilings do help promoting teamplay at lower levels, but when it comes down to the highest levels of play, teamplay is as important in high skill ceiling games, such as qw as in CS.

actually when you think about it, Tekken is more like the CS of fighting games.

it's "realistic", close quarters, ground based fighting with basic punches and kicks and most combos being juggles. in short terms: BORING.

in SF4 you have vastly different characters (in both control mechanics and fighting style), projectiles, air game, super bar divided in 4 EX stocks, revenge gauge, and a focus attack mechanic with offensive and defensive applications.

You'll note from my profile that I'm 29 meaning I was 11 when SF2 came out. I played it and the follow up games extensively in the arcade and the home consoles and thoroughly enjoyed them. However, Tekken showed a lot of potential and by the time Tekken 3 came out it was light years ahead of the Street Fighter games in terms of depth and skill, leaving Street Fighter appearing basic in comparison.

You would have been 7 when SF2 came out so not only were you not old enough to appreciate the game and even if you were I can't imagine many SF2 machines getting through to Romania with it only just emerging from communism. Given the situation at the time I suspect it was many years before you could start playing these sorts of games. Tekken's "depth" is not visible, just like in any slow paced FPS (Halo/CS) that retards argue about against DM games like Quake.

Tekken is the newer game that caters to gfx whores and newbs just like Halo/CS..

Tekken is more accessible because of really simple to grasp action (dudes exchanging punches and kicks) and control (try explain how charge moves work to a complete newb in SF.. you'll get a headache).

The fact that the only thing you talk about is combos is a clear illustration that you have no clue what other elements are involved in the game. You make other claims like saying that Tekken is realistic which leaves me wondering if you've ever even played the game. Other comments like your claim that Tekken caters for graphics whores further illustrates that you are talking out of your arse since the graphics in Tekken have consistently been criticised and have always been inferior to DOA, Soul Calibur and Virtua Fighter. It wasn't until TTT PS2 that they even bothered with 3D backgrounds and for the first four arcade games they just stuck a picture in the background illustrating that Tekken has never been about the graphics.

how does the focus work?

If i use it once a small green bar appears on the energy bar (not the super bar) and it runs down, but I think it increases if you do consecutive focus attacks.

Do your focus attacks recover quicker if you do more in row as up until now I have not paid any attention to the new stuff, just played it to get used to animation and timings.

any good info or links or the whole focus side of the game, its new to me as i stoppped playing with alpha 1.

Some EX-Moves and all Focus Attacks allow you to absorb one attack (except throws or Armor Breaking moves), this is often referred to as having Super Armor properties.

when you absorb the attack you get temporary damage from that hit marked by a semi-transparent segment of lifebar. this temporary damage regenerates in time if you don't get hit again.

Absorbing a hit with a Focus Attack also builds Revenge Meter. so you can absorb multiple fireballs just to powerup your Ultra meter.. but you have to be careful not to get hit while you took the temporary damage because you will be hurt permanently and won't be able to recover.

also you can cancel the focus attack by tapping F,F or B,B while charging it.

Didn't know the bit about the ultra meter, good to know.

First of all, Tekken is much more popular than Street Fighter, just take a look at sales figures or even the Arcadia rankings, where only BlazBlue and Gundam vs. Gundam are close to Tekken 6. And it's much more popular for the very reasons you bashed Street Fighter IV: it's much more accessible than any other fighting game (except probably Smash Bros.), it works really well in casual play and the skill needed to enjoy it is much lower than that of other games. What puzzles me is that you somehow think those aspects are bad, when they are precisely the virtues of Tekken.

The skill needed to play and enjoy Street Fighter, or any other 2D fighting game for that matter, is much higher just because of the "complex" motions needed to do basic stuff and the unfriendliness of a system that doesn't allow button mashing and let's you fight at long ranges (which new players usually don't understand).

Then there are the skills required for 2D games as opposed to those of 3D games, which are fundamentally different. I remember once reading that in 2D games players fight for space, whereas in 3D games they fight for time. Although debatable, that pretty much defines the difference. Not that 3D games don't need spacing or that 2D games don't relay on mix-ups, but to say one skill set is somehow deeper than the other is plain stupid.

Somehow you think that dexterity is what makes Tekken deep, and that couldn't be more of a dumb assumption. In fact SF4 or VF's one frame windows for certain things are some of the stupidiest things to ever get into a fighting game. Like in Quake, the real skill lies in the strategy, the tactics and the mind games, not on being able to execute a combo or a movement that requires lots of dexterity.

If you would have to draw comparisons, Virtua Fighter would be the Quake of FPS in terms of skill needed. Certainly Tekken would fall on the Counter-Strike category because there are tens of games much deeper than it, but these comparisons are dumb anyway.

Then there's the online argument. Tekken 5 DR didn't work because it had a crappy net code, not because the game is not online friendly. Virtua Fighter 5, GGPO and, to a lesser extent because its net code is crap, SF4 have proved online, and even flawless online play, is very possible even for execution intensive games. Does this mean Tekken 6 will work fine online? Heh, I doubt it, Japanese developers just don't care about Western online issues, but that doesn't mean the game is so execution heavy that it's not possible to play it flawlessly online. In fact, we can pretty much say that that can't be the case with any game after playing with constant 0 frame delay in GGPO.

Essentially then you've posted what I already said, i.e. that among people who are so dedicated to their fighting games that they are willing to spend considerable money in the arcade playing them Tekken is the more popular game. Among casual players who play on the home console SF4 is the more popular game and sold over 2million in the first week (far higher than Tekken does). Clearly then SF is the game for the casual, mass-market player (a sort of CS/Halo type game) while Tekken is the game for the dedicated enthusiast who wants the highest skill experience and is willing to pay for it.

This was the case before SF4 came out on the home consoles and the machines were largely unused while there was always a long wait for Teken with a queue where you put your money on the cabinet to challenge the winner. Tekken has always attracted more players than Street Fighter in the arcade, whether it be Tekken 3 vs Street Fighter Alpha or Tekken 6 vs SF4 (the exception was Tekken 4 which where they completely broke the game dynamics).

All I can say is that I've played both Tekken and Street Fighter extensively and there's absolutely no doubt in my mind which games is the higher skill. Tekken has far more options for attack, defence and counterattack than Streetfighter which is very limited in what you can do. That said it really doesn't matter to me what other people play and it doesn't matter to me that more people think Halo is higher skill than Quake or that most people SF is higher skill than Tekken. You'll never win an argument criticising a game that sells 2million copies in a week just because there are so many people who have bought the game and, without trying other games to any extent, become convinced that their game is number one.

Right, I won't go on any further because I'll be here all day and I regret replying to Jamerio in the first place since I wasn't looking for an argument. I think what's most important is not which game is best but that we've actually got a wide choice of fighting games to play, which sadly isn't the not the case for FPS duellists who haven't had a smash hit game since Quake 3. Are you serious? Would you care to look at the numbers Street Fighter and Tekken pull at the important tournaments like SBO or Evo? SF has always been more popular among the competitive crowd, Tekken has always been more popular among the casuals. Again, take a look at the sales figures for previous SF and Tekken, SF4 is the first SF in 15 years that sells well and I bet Tekken 6 will surpass it.

Tekken is probably more noob friendly than SF4. You can do combos by just pressing randomly on the buttons. The producer for Tekken have even said in interviews that they made the game mainly for the casual players.

Why is it so inconveivable that somebody other than Id can made a decent duel game? I certainly think there's more of a chance of somebody like Tom Mustaine making a good duel game then a company like Id. Tom Mustaine at least has some enthusiasm for competitive gaming while Id have such little interest in it they couldn't even be bothered to put a decent multiplayer mode for Doom 3.

It has consistently been shown by the like of arQon (CPM) and AnthonyJ (Q4Max) and the ezQuake team that someone with enthusiasm for competative Quake can make a better game in their spare time than a company with no enthusiasm like Id working full time. Since Tom Mustaine has some enthusiasm for competative gaming and extensinve experience in FPS development I think it's more likely that he could produce a good competative FPS than Id.

Whether it would be a commercial success is another matter entirely, and the likely reason the game was cancelled is that they've decided they can make more money from Wii and iPod games than they can making a game for the small competitive community. Rather sad really.

Watching the video again I'm getting more enthusiastic about it. I think what's great is that the developer has a positive attitude towards the competitive community and for that reason I'd buy their game on principle alone.

I wish they went for separate weapons instead of secondary fire modes because I never know what button to bind the secondary fire to (I use the mouse wheel button but it's not exactly comfortable). Despite that I'm really looking forward to playing a fresh duel experience that I haven't played before.

I don't know if it was something only in PK++ or if it was default, but there was a bind where you could hit one button, and it would permanently swap alt/primary fire - hit it again and it would swap back. This way, you could always be using mouse1 to fire.

PK always did and still does look good.

For once, I agree with you. id has effectively killed competitive deathmatch as a platform that can be taken seriously, what with the laundry list of bugs and other problems it comes up with for every game it throws out there and the lack of notable games from other companies (UT3 as a highly competitive game is just, ugh), not to mention how badly it's nerfed their Quakecon tourneys in recent years (Quad Damage was cool, I guess, but in the end, you couldn't really take it all that seriously). id made and broke deathmatch.

Since you are not looking for the next big duel game, but a duel game that is not the same you have already played: Looks like Warsow 0.5 could suit you.

Duel is only dead because of a lack of effort on the part of Id. If you go back ten years duel FPS games were the big tournament event getting mass media coverage on major news channels and in major publications. If Id had continued to release duel games the genre would have remained popular and continued to receive widespread attention. Sadly after Q3 Id released nothing other than the thoroughly broken Q4 and the ten year old game in a browser QuakeLive. With nothing to play it's fully understandable why the number of players has declined/

At this point it hasn't actually been tested whether there is any demand for a duel game since there hasn't been a high profile game released since Q3. It could be that there are a lot of people wishing to play such a game but they haven't been able to because there's been nothing to play.

Obviously there was Painkiller between Q3 and now and that didn't take off but I think that was partly because of the timing of the release. I personally didn't play Painkiller online because I knew Doom 3 was just around the corner and thought that would be the next big duel game (little knowing how shit it was going to be).

We won't actually be able to assess if duel games are dead until a Triple A title comes out with a decent duel mode. That will probably be People Can Fly's next game. If that fails then it would then be fair to say that duel games are dead, but right now it's impossible to assess just how big the demand for such a game is since nobody has tested the waters in over a decade.

You have a point. I also think a lot of the coverage Quake received in the mainstream media was due to the CPL's promotional skills. While the CPL ended up being vilinised in the Quake community they definitely did do a lot to promote the game. Without a CPL style organisation that completely focuses on one game and with much greater competition from games like COD and CS it will be much harder for a duel game to reach the same levels of mass media coverage.

At the same time I think PC duel games (when they do take off) have much better community organisation since they allow for tournament websites, discussion forums, e-sports news websites, demo hosting sites and streaming coverage all on the same device you play the game. You can't have the same level of community integration on games consoles, nor can you have things like mods or community created content that strengthen the game. I therefore think PC duel games can take off more due to the greater ease of communication and organisation. I also think the duel genre lends itself well to mass media coverage since you end up with individual superstar gamers like Thresh and Fatal1ty, which is are more compelling to cover than team events. I remain optimistic that if a Tripple A title comes out with a decent duel mode the duel community can flourish again.

Even if the duel genre never reaches the same heights I'll be happy if we just build up a reasonably sized community and have a game to play because there has been a total lack of anything good for a long time. Painkiller: Resurrection looks like it might attract a few people and give us something to play for a while until People Can Fly's next game.

Even if I had bizarrely bought the game getting me to play SF4 would be about as productive as getting you to play Tekken 6. The only way you could truely settle the debate would be for both sides to present their game to an independent panel who could then deem which game had the highest skill requirement, however that would be stupid because it doesn't bloody matter anyway! Why the hell would I buy a game if I've played it in the arcade and don't like it? Are you that fucking moronic? It's been out in the arcade for a full year before the PC release giving me more than assess it.

I'm happy to admit that I didn't know the home console version of the game had additional characters. Having played the game in the arcade I paid no attention at all to the home version since I had no intention of buying it. However, even if they did add nine extra characters the game itself will be fundamentally the same.

Anyway, unlike you I prefer to actually play games than argue about them online. Given the time you spend arguing with people it makes me wonder if you have any time to play games (or any friends). Seeing as this is your hobby (and a rather sad hobby at that) you're clearly happy to continue this forever so I'll just have to add you to my ignore list. My copy of Painkiller arrived today and is installing as I type so I'm going to play that and I'll leave you to have fun arguing with people.

Whatever replaces QL, I hope it comes soon because, even after being patient with it, this is easily the least playable game I've ever played ever -- even more than the earliest builds of Q4.

With that said, gonna have to agree on SF4. Even if I suck at it right now, I just feel so relieved to play something that works properly after a session of QL.

So this PK Expansion looks decent.

I've been reading a few articles and it sounds promising. According to this article Homegrown Games is comprised of people who made some of the more popular Painkiller mods. This statement from the lead developer confirms PK++ will be included which indicates a strong focus on multiplayer. Their whole attitude seems very positive and I like the idea of people working on the game who are fans of it and who have a good idea what the community wants. This article also mentions that additional multiplayer maps will be released after the game comes out and gives a September release date.

Looking at some of the screenshots it looks well worth buyign for the single player campaign alone, especially with the budget price and new co-op mode. I'm also hopeful about the multiplayer and have ordered another copy of the original Painkiller so I can get some practice before Resurrection comes out.

Well I'll definitely pick it up, and if it's good we can try to push it on some online leagues to get attention :)

What is this PMX? I had a search but the only PMX game I could find was Princess Marian X which looks like a pretty hardcore. Forget Painkiller Resurrection, this is where it's at dawg!

Seriously though I can't find much about this PMX other than an ESR news article. It sounds fairly interesting but without a bit more promotion and think Gillz may be absolutely right. Is there a website for the game?

i don't think comrade was talking about mainstream success.

PMX is being developed by arQon and a few other CPM contributors/developers. It's goal is to be a standalone game, like CPM in a box. Re-skinned, new sounds, etc. Sort of like what CS did.

Unfortunately (for fortunately, depends on perspective) the development is taking ages, so we probably won't see it for a while. I'm confident Warsow will still have more of a player base then PMX will.

That depends if you count the insta crew or not. But yes, for the purposes of this thread player base is small. There's no trouble finding a duel at any time of the day in EU, but it's always the same people. On team gametypes; it's rare to put a TDM game altogether. CTF happens sometimes. Bomb & Defuse happens frequently but it's yet to be seen how large will it be once 0.5 is public.

Anyone knows if PMX is still being developed, BTW? Last time I wanted to check every mention of it looked very old at promode forums. Would be nice to get some fresh news about it.

i kno that ix is still playing around with gameplay concepts, not sure whether they are pmx related though. I think their goal was kind of close to the openarena thing, ie, recreate all the media necessary to be able to make the game standalone.

Still looking forward a new game based on CPM / QW insead of remaking vQ3 again and again, even if it was/is good - CPM was a huge step forward.

I'd rather they just took a real analytical approach to designing the best DM game possible than basing it off some 10+ year old game that while has cult appeal is hardly the holy grail of DM gaming.

Q3 would (and variations of) would have bombed if it wasn't for the broadband boom.

I'm not sure, when Q3 was released broadband was hardly common and by the time it was, it had sold the majority of sales it was to pick up.

But anyway, I think people need to realise the reason people aren't buying/playing Quake(any) and UT (any) is because of the mechanics and not some psuedo reason they have come up with.

Well I cant recall any new game which is more complicated than shitty Call of Duty and isnt a remake of an old game.

I had some hope in QL but it turned out to be Quake 3 from 2000, with slight differences. Well, you might have the point about creating a brand new game with a new machanics but my experience convices that new games are only worse and worse.

Mostly new games are very easy and after some time of the gaming experience I'm not interested in them anymore, even though they might have some nice ideas - the realization sucks. I know that gaming industry has to follow global likes and has to create games without balls but... ekhem...

Also I think a duel is getting more and more dead. Team games overwhelm duels mostly becouse its ,,funnier and better'' for a crowd (also more newbie friendly). Personally I believe that the duel can be resurrected only by a game with great team gametypes in which 1v1 will be an addition.

I'm not denying that a lot of new games are easier, just going back in time isn't going to sell well and won't give us anything substantially worth the effort it would take.

We've got QW/Q2/Q3 lets do something new and right!

Duels problem are many, including the fact that lots of solo players is dwarfed by crowds of teams.
