The ruber shit on the G5 is very hard to wear. After a few years of use I only had a 2-3mm spot of wear where my thumb sits. On the G9 though the rubber shit started peeling off when I played with a cast on. Its pretty tough but nothing close to the stuff they use on the G5.

I felt great when I smashed my g9 against the floor.

The same clumsiness from the MX500 template. Wohoo. At least make a counterpart or two, like a model that's not the same behemoth size. I loved the Wingman gaming mouse and the G1/MX3x0 because they weren't so big and they fitted perfectly in the palm. P.t. the new Steelseries mouse seems like the best replacement for my G1..

Maybe Super Man can game at 165 inches per second? And what's the deal with the placement of the + and - buttons? Makes them absolutely useless for anything other than adjusting DPI on the fly, which not even Super Man would want to do. Defunct buttons are a waste of resources, not that every one of these mice they sell won't be anyway.

With the way the sensor is placed, if you rotate the mouse it will result in pointer movement. I would guess that's not too great for consistency but would need to try it first.

I've actually never thought about it before, but if you changed to a mouse where the sensor is located like on this new model, your old sens wouldn't match any more. Imagine we have the two extremes, where in one case the sensor is in the top, and in the other the sensor is located in the lower part near your wrist. Now if you move your mouse with your hand and wrist fixed, you'll might move the lower sensor 5 cm. If the sensor is located in the top, the same move give me more than double the distance. Fortunately I think most mice have the sensor located the same place.

You know what I dont get? Logitech comes with 5700cpi / 165ips mice (G500/G9x) based on the ADNS-9500 sensor.

What does the Avago Tech specs say?
- High speed motion detection – up to 150ips and 30G
- Selectable resolution up to 5040cpi with 90 cpi step size

I already guessed in the past that "high dpi settings" were done artifcially, for a part. Simply by upscaling. But how could it be possible to have it do more inches per second? Just by rating it with a different testing method? (as done with monitors on responses and contrast ratios).

btw, also a bit weird; Steelseries Xai (same ADNS-9500) says:

They adjusted the firmware to still make it capable of 1 step?

You can do more CPI artifcially (simply software upscaling), you can also use a different lense (Razer Viper or NZXT Avatar) but you will lose some max. ips but that's not the case here.

You can set the ADNS-9500 to pretty much every CPI. When Logitech announced the G9x they had different specs as when Avago announced the ADNS-9500 4 or 5 monts later, Avago did a lot of tweaking (icluding CPI and FPS) in that time and are still tweaking the sensor, so specs are pretty much canging all the time.

The sensor is also capable of much more, allthough Xai, G9x, G500 have only about 10-12 megapixels per second the hardware can process more than 40k but Avago will keep this performnace for the next generation. They have done that before, 3060/3080 or 6010/6090 have the same hardware, it's just a different srom, so theoretically you could make a G9 out of a G5 with a new firmware.

For the record, specs are "150 ips on most gaming surfaces" and "200 ips on selected surfaces", specs of older Avago sensors are based on a standard surface kit (white paper, photopaper, black formica, etc.).

For me it sounds like that Logitech told Avago that they need more CPI than Razer. :D

Useless CPI race but Razer has the better horse, the Philips twin-eye should go up to 10.000 CPI. :D

ExactSense on the Xai isn't really comparable with that on the Ikari Laser where it's a real feature of the sensor.
The Xai does the "scaling" on the MCU, no big deal but "nice to have", especially if you use 2 CPI settings ingame.

yep, that's the CPI-button

unfortunately it's not fully bindable cause you also enter the menu with that button (I don't really need a CPI-Button)

no you can't, SS doesn't want the user to accidentally enter the menu by binding that button

Well make it so you don't enter the menu if you don't want to. MX518, NZXT Avatar, Lachesis allows you to bind anything to those buttons.

I was going to buy Xai but now I won't. That extra button is really useful in qw,ql and even TF2. For example I use 1 of those buttons on MX518 for walking in QL and quick nailgun in QW.

I can understand that, imho there are some ways to solve this "issue".

Perhaps i will get a custom firmware/software to bind that button some time in the future. :D

why doesnt someone make an awesome new optical mouse that is great for FPS gamers? i mean, laser mice @ 48320948320942 dpi are fine for people that use high sens, but low sens gamers are simply not catered for these days. Im so glad i have an mx518 and an ie 3.0 to replace the 518 when it dies.

because the people who want the same old mouse will most likely keep buying the same old mouse.
There's probably not enough money in hoping some of those people will switch. Especially if you make it more expensive to cover for developement cost.
And mainstream technophiliacs just can't get off on optical plus 400dpi.

as long as you have good enough ips high CPI don't hurt, nobody forces you to use them ;)

PS: There is also the Kinzu and if you wan't a bigger mouse with sidebuttons there is the Roccat Kova but I doubt that this mouse will be awesome. ;)

I use 25cm/360 with the Razer Copperhead which has worked flawlessly.
