They do run hot. I just cut the blue wire and the fan goes at full speed all time. Helps a lot, not sure it you can achieve same speed in catalyst. But thye are hot cards, unless you get one with better cooling, or go for a 4870 with DBL cooler.

400W is too little for such a system to begin with.

That seems crazy. My Sapphire is 39-40 degrees right now in idle. I have three silent fans in the case though, since it got boiling hot inside of the case without them. I don't think believe that psu is enough either..

Nope, it's actually true. Mine's at 89c at the moment and it's idle. That's with the fan on 40% too.

I should probably get a better fan, I heard the stock one frequently just dies anyway.

Cut the blue FTW as this is a card that should be better coolled at default. Cutting the wire will ensure this happens.

Nah it's loud as fuck at 100%, I'll probably just get a new fan/card.

Is a 4850's temps going to be that drastically different? I'm in cali and its probably 100 degrees outside right now too.

That's a nice temp, mine is at 63 in widows with the fan full speed and it sounds like a fucking Dirt Devil :(

Something is very wrong there, it should be around that temp in 3D mode. Mine is in 63 in windows with the fan on full speed.
Even on default fan speed it was 69-72. The other dudes is 55.

The fan is probably not sitting on the cooller properly.
Seriously, that's a terrible temp. If the fan is sitting right it should cool it good enough.

I think the fan is full of dust again, I have shit loads of fans on this case so it collects it REALLY fast, it is somewhere closer to that when I give it a good clean.

buy an 'accelero s1' heatsink, it does fit the hd48xx series. and its had great reviews!
i fitted one to my 8800gt when i bought it, you dont need to put a fan on it by all accounts but i attached a 120mm akasa amber facing the heatsink (attached it using zip ties) its running under 40c on load.
advantage to this is itll be running ALOT cooller and also alot quieter than anything stock, especially if your running stock fans on 100% speed. the akasa amber is pretty much silent if you opt for one. one thing to note is the adhesive strip things that hold the smaller heatsinks is a bit crap so get some different thermal tape, cant remember which i got now, think it was from akasa again.


having said they do run hot and as others have mentioned 400w is quite low for the system.
