Definitely get one of the 120hz LCDs, even if you have to wait a bit longer to save for it. It'll be worth it.

I don't get it. Does it use dual link dvi or something because single link dvi can't push much more than 60 images at around whatever the resolution is.

It's only one cable though, but yeah it's dual link DVI. I played with them at dreamhack (cpm finals) and they are really good.

im only suggesting him to stay with crt and maybe try to find something like nec/mitsubishi diamond plus 230SB (maybe iiyama vision master 513) theire cheap nowadays its possible to find them for 15-20e.Or if he really decided for lcd then 120hz is probablly a must, maybe from viewsonic VX2265wm its cheap u can buy it from ebay.de for about 230e+shipment but if 2233rz is affordable then rather buy samsung.

I was going to buy some LCD maaany times (because of various reasons). I've changed my mind many times (was thinking about 19" Eizo with slow screen as well as some fucking huge 24" TN panel and many other options).

I am going to uni soon and honestly I can't be arsed to take my 17" CRT (it's fucken 440km). So here I am... I think this time I will finally bought something ;-)

I would like to buy something for 200-400 Euro. I was thinking about getting some monitor with TV tuner (would be so nice :<) but responce time of those are always baaad (for example 2333HD). I don't play much nowadays but I still may play some games from time to time, so I am thinking about this 120Hz Samsung (it would be my only display, as I am not taking my CRT together).

I've read about it here some time ago (2233RZ) and I was like "wow, I want it !:(" but it didn't look like there was any chance of getting it in Poland. Now I checked and I can buy without a problem!

So, do you think getting Samsung 2233RZ for 300 Euro (without those glasses of course, I don't have nVidia card anyway) is a good idea?:) (I've just seen the offer and I am quite exciting, I think I may even order it this week :P).

Sorry for Engrish but I am very tired (although had some free time to waste :>). There is also some thread made by nVc, about ViewSonic monitors (price would be similar for me actually) but I don't think I will be able to get it in Poland and I am not fancy buying it abroad.

Is 2233RZ good when it comes to everyday work? (don't know if it gives any advantage in that field, maybe it's better for your eyes which would be a very important thing for me to be honest)

The price here in Bosnia is also around 300 Euros , so I guess definately worth the price. I decided to take it, so hopefully it will meet the expectations.

i bought the samsung 2233rz some weeks ago and it's in gaming aspects really the best TFT i've used so far. no noticeable input lag, no ghosting and even if you use lower resolutions than the native one, the picture looks really good for a tft.

playing in 4:3 with black stripes on the side of the screen works well too - the monitor automatically switches to 4:3 when it receives a 4:3 signal which comes in handy... no messing around in the OSD menu is needed - i only had to change a setting in the ATI catalyst menu and set the monitor to auto-aspect-ratio to make this working.

a real downside is the monitor stand - that thing seriously is a joke.

i am using the monitor set to 120hz under windows XP - no problems there - if someone cares about those 3d glasses - i think they can only be used under vista.

What are your references? Can you compare the picture quality in non-native resolutions to any other tft?
Some german gaming website rated the solutions as "poor picture quality for anything besides the native resolution". I was just wondering if the "gamestar" people are talking out of their ass again, or if there are some real issues with this tft..

after reading your post i've tried to look a bit deeper into the non-native resolution matter and i think the different opinions are probably caused by different test scenarios.

i hardly never play anything beside quake3, ql and qw and i always use _very_ low quality, eg, 800x600, vertex light and picmip 5 - in this scenario i seriously consider the quality in this setup very good.i compared it to a dell 2408WFP monitor which gets pretty good results in most reviews and i would still rate the 2233rz higher.

but... i also tried far cry 2 with all details set to max and a resolution of 1024x768 and i have to admit that, in this scenario the dell display has a better image quality - i'm only talking about pure picture quality - the high hz and less ghosting of the 2233rz still deliver a better gaming experience _for me_ - even if the picture looks a bit sharper and the colors a bit better on the dell.

i also want to add, that i've played on a Sony CRT until 3-4 weeks ago when it broke :( - in the last years i've tried about 5-6 different tft's and the 2233rz is the first monitor i would seriously think about to replace my Sony CRT (if it wasn't fucked that is).

bottom line: if you're playing more or less competitive quake and want the best monitor to enhance your stats i can recommend it.

if you're playing at high quality and want the best image quality available, with 8xfsaa and whatever... i want to abstain from voting for a specific monitor. :)

Thanks alot for the detailed answer! I too am looking for a tft to replace my old IIama crt I've used for 4 years now, so I was concerned about the low resolutions I use, 800x600 for most games (my pc is slow) or even 640x480 in QL out of habit and for ultimate smoothness :)

I guess what gamestar did was compare the 2233rz to monitors like eizo, who are slow in response time but give a perfect image and colors, since that is what those displays are aiming for.

Do you know if the 120hz feature can be used with a gf 8600gt? It has two dual link DVI-I connectors. I also don't care for the 3d feature. Samsung says supported graphics cards are NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT or higher.

no problem! i think as long as you have one dual link DVI port it should work - i have tried the monitor on a pc with a 7600 gt card which has one dual link dvi port and a non-dual link dvi port, on the dual link port 120hz works well, on the non-dual link port you can only configure it to 60hz.

can you guys please give me the model numbers of these 120Hz LCD monitors you talk about? all i know is there's one from Samsung and one from Viewsonic. i live in the UAE and we don't get stuff early here, and i've been waiting for these monitors for what seems like forever, which is why i am still with my trusty old 15.1inch 75Hz LG LCD.
also, by your general opinion, is the Samsung better or the Viewsonic? i will obviously buy one on personal opinion, but would like to know what you guys know/suggest.

I just realized the VX2265WM is not sold in Europe, the viewsonic 120Hz model for the european market is VX2268WM.

i doubt the two 120hz monitors have different panels - but if the viewsonic has a robust monitor-stand you're maybe better off with the viewsonic.

as mentioned before, the stand of the 2233rz is a joke, really unstable and botchy... ;-)

I don't really mind the stand on the Samsung monitor. Works good and it's not like you even touch your monitor everyday to push it over :)

Anyway, the samsung monitor is amazing. Haven't tried the viewsonic though, but I don't think that the difference is that big..

actually he got some point
at first i was confused when i heard about wobbling (hadn't noticed anything). thanks to lcd monitor's size i was able to throw my table away (it was heavy wood) and place all the stuff on my (not so big, lighter) desk and sometimes it wobbles when i am typing (and i don't have adhd :P).

also some people moan about lack of regulation, it's kinda true as well, although not a problem for me. all in all, for its price (300E, you can buy average TN panel for 150 or even less) you could except a bit better quality.

anyway i don't regret buying it (i am only worried about stuck subpixel, hope it won't come back quickly ;P). it totally blows. i must say i tried to play with 60hz (just mah curiousity, never had lcd before) and i can't imagine playing with such a low refresh rate :D

Ok , i bought 2233rz yesterday. QL gaming @ 120 Hz is MUCH smoother than at 60 Hz, so I guess this monitor already has its edge.
Im pretty much satisfied, I didnt get those 3d glasses , not sure if they bundle with the monitor anyway, and not so much of an importance to me.
now I have question:
I used to play on 17"CRT in resolution 800 x 600(r_mode 9) or lately 640 x 480(r_mode 5), but now If I use those resolutons pic is gonna get stretched and sens is not the same anymore. WHat should I do?
Set r_mode -1 and then custom widht/height or to use some other r_mode ? cant find a list of available r_modes so I don`t know all resolutions supported. btw native res for this monitor is 1680 x 1050, but I think thats too much for a fps gaming, at least cause of fps drops on weaker machines.
What other resolution is ok for this monitor to keep this aspect ratio, but to have lower resolution ?

22" vs 17" with the same resolution. Pixels are much larger on the 22", that's why the image seems so stressed and also why your sens feels akward. Since LCD's don't have the zoom function, my piece of advice is to use lower resolution in windows and use windowed mode for your game.

I found that option in my graphic cards drivers and now I can play in 4:3 with two black bands on the side.

I still hold on to my 17" Samsung 750p until it dies, but I'm so torn between buying a used CRT when it does or a LCD. Do you miss your CRT now that you have tried your new screen a bit?

well if u expect the same pic as on your CRT maybe u will be dissapointed, it took some time for me to calibrate colors as well, but Im very much satisfied, the size of this thing compared to my old 17" is awesome and I definatly wouldnt go back, and like I said this monitor is very smooth for gaming too.
but thats just personal preferences, maybe viewing angle would be a big trouble for u, best if u can try somewhere and then decide.
