There's no mention of "God" in our Constitution. We are a representative democracy (Republic) and so therefore you should expect that some religious types are voted in because there are some people out there who are believers looking for someone to "represent" them. It's a sad fact that there's a lot of believers in the US today (and this most probably because the US has vast rural areas where ignorance/religion prosper), but that has little to do with the foundation that our country was built on (which was entirely secular and free from religion).

Besides, when we have "free-thinking" founding fathers/influencers like Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin (a good friend of David Hume's), I think you can see the US as one of the least religious countries in the world (historically speaking) at its formation and ideological foundation.

EDIT: Also, "So help me God" is not a required line and is only repeated as tradition that started in 1881 with Chester Arthur.

According to the some of the anti-Americans individuals on ESR, it really should say, "In Jesus We Trust". But it doesn't and it's ironically divisive of people to use this as evidence of a "Christian" or "religious" nation. Spinoza (a pantheist) believed in a "God" and he was essentially labeled as an atheist by his contemporaries because the existence of "God" wasn't interested in humans or involved in human affairs. What everyone is hate-mongering on ESR about is Christianity in American politics like spyteman pointed out (which is usually ALWAYS the Republican party's recent "movement" is founded on a strong voter base built on Christian values). However, "God" can be applied to Muslims, Jews, Christians, deists, pantheists (like Spinoza), and probably any other random cult/pagan/satanist/etc with the exception of atheists/anti-theists. [And really, as Sam Harris said, atheism is a pointless term... you wouldn't call someone a non-alchemist or a non-astrologist, would you?]

So, unless a person is a polemicist/iconoclast, I don't see exactly how any atheists in politics would even care about "In God We Trust" being on legal tender.

That phrase remains there because of politics/tradition and the reason is that there's not a large voter base of atheists/anti-theists who would, through activism, have that removed from the bills (i.e., change the law that governs what changes can be made to traditions in US symbolism). After all, that's how a Republic works -- indirect, representative democracy. A law stands until amended by the legislative branch or found unconstitutional by the judicial branch and since "God" can be used by pretty much any religion and those "on the fence" and non-militant atheists don't care, it probably won't change soon. The fact that Darwinism is what is taught in public schools (rather than Creationism) is a much better sign that the US Government is vastly more secular than what the ravings of some of the users here on ESR claim the US is.

Sure, I'm all about getting it removed from the currency. But the only way that can be done is a strong base of activist atheism which, again, would be the activity of iconoclasts/polemicists. As anon mentioned Christopher Hitchens, so should I as well since he's one of the eminent polemicists of our day. Hitchens points out that there is a brewing rise in atheism in America and since negative/dirty politics is the only real politics in America, it'll come to pass when atheism isn't equated with immorality and well-spoke, and openly atheist politicians are elected that there will probably be better efforts made to reflect the secular nature of the founding principles of the US government.

The problem I and probalby many others have with that is not the sentence as such, but the implication that religious powers are influential enough to have a sentence written on the (or one of the) most important currency in the world.
And we are simply wary of religious influence.
