I'm using the new cvar cg_zoomToggle 1, but I wish there was some way it could auto-zoom back out when I switch weapon, rather then having to push the zoom button again.

That's easy. For instance:

Yeah, they're unused for any other purpose in my case.

I also use some different fovs and crosshairs for different weapons, but that's not that hard to script either.

Why not? *thinks for a minute* Try this:

1. if you've got no different crosshairs and fovs:
set zoom "vstr zoomin"
set zoomin "cg_fov 45; sensitivity 2; set zoom vstr zoomout"
set zoomout "cg_fov 90; sensitivity 2; set zoom vstr zoomin"
bind ctrl vstr zoom
bind z "weapon 2; vstr zoomout"
bind c "weapon 3; vstr zoomout"

2. If you do have indeed different crosshairs and fovs (like I do) it gets a little tricky, but it's still very easy to script. Let's say we have fov 80 for RG, so we want our zoom fov to be always at 40, no matter which weapon we use, because we pretty much zoom in only for the rail anyway.

During my Quake 3 days, when I had this kind of script, I didn't even use the "zoom button" to zoom out, only to zoom in, and I zoomed out by pressing my weapon button, for instance, Q for RG. That's why I kept this script very simple:
set zoom "vstr zoomin"
set zoomin "cg_fov 40; sensitivity 2; cg_drawgun 1; set zoom vstr zoomout"
set zoomout "cg_fov 80; sensitivity 4; cg_drawgun 2; set zoom vstr zoomin"

No scripts at all, just binds.

Of course, you can also chose to make the set up much more sophisticated, but in my opinion it's just complicating things unnecessarily. Go to fojji.se and see how he figured it out.

By the way, I didn't use this kind of set-up for Quake Live, since the field of view was capped at 60 or 70. But, one of the last updates reversed it, and I'll be doing this kind of set-up for my Quake Live again, as soon as I'll get a chance to play it (no time atm :/).

you're welcome. it equals a 3.8 sensitivity while zoomed at fov 100 (i'm zoomed all the time).

how do u calculate it?

it depends on the fov used. to find out the coefficient do this:

- fire up q3
- set sensitivity to 1
- set cl_mouseaccel to 0
- set +zoom
- set cg_zoomfov to the fov you need
- set cl_showmouserate 1

now move the mouse and you'll see lots of numbers. however, one number remains constant all the time, this is the coefficient you are looking for (e.g. for fov 100 it's 1.114422).

now you take your normals sens, for example 3.8 and devide it by 1.114422.

and don't plus me. i think this method was introduced by czm many many years ago :)

why don't you zoomout to your actual fov/sens?

it's a relic of a pre-cg_gunZ thinshaft method + a method against the "zoom-effect" which has recently been fixed by the quakecon update. when you used something for more than 5 years, you somehow get used to it.

not sure i follow - does this allow you go press your rail bind, it selects rail, then press again and it zooms in etc, then press again and it zooms out.. etc etc..??

correct. PLUS it only works with rail and no other weapon. if you select another weapon while being zoomed with rail, the zoom is automatically switched off.

quality - nice work! - ive never bothered with zoom before due to a lack of useful buttons but this is ideal

2 questions though, is this already working in QL (not sure if the vstr's etc worked in ql like in q3) - and with regards to:

This is most likely because you got wrong key bindings now. As everything about the weapons is defined in the vstrs now, you have to adjust your key bindings like this:

bind {key} "vstr {name of the defined vstr}"

e.g.:
bind "SPACE" "vstr rail"

the additional stuff you added like crosshairs is okay where you put it.

Still any Quakers around who's doesn't care about those advanced binds for zoomin? Me doesn't so far but u geeks made me curious. Let's start a poll: Who's a zoom player who not! :P

i have zoom on the browser forward button of my mouse - i used to use it back when i was playing ra3 and we were playing HUGE maps like ra3map12 where you simply can't see the enemy properly without zoom - now i'm only using it when playing def in ctf/ntf - zoomed on a small opening between walls to see if someone's attacking from there (depending on the map obviously) like so:
