tbh i didnt quite understand how they mean to compensate that with a premium package, since all the features they mention that u would get by buying a premium acc are only interesting to "real" quakers and not the general population.

By the way IGA has been doing financially, I'm sure that the deal with id was more of a risk that they took in hopes to save the drowning company. I'm sure IGA are more interested in actual ad clicks, since id does not have a history of the kinds of traffic that would provide IGA with the kind of value on simple page views.

I don't think id have a backup plan if IGA go under, either. Seems quite possible with the current economy, and the fact that they have managed to lose over $40 million in 2 years.

I like your design, although I would prefer the three "best picks" were highlighted somehow. Minor bug; When sorting servers by number of players, 1 and 10 is sorted equally because they both begin with a 1.

Save to desktop or somewhere, doesn't really matter.

Open prism and click the gear on the bottom right (status bar needs to be enabled) and go to tools>add ons then drag the xpi file into the extensions area and install.

Once installed click the gear on the bottom right again and go to greasemonkey>download user script and enter the url https://userscripts.org/scripts/source/55486.user.js

This ad debate is really sensitive. It's a double-edged sword, really. What makes me sleep well at night are a few facts.

For one I haven't seen a single ad on the webpage since I registred in June. Neither do they bring any substatial revenue. Assuming we have a CTR of 1% which is normal and that each ad pays $1 per click (which seems feasible) and lastly that we have 60 thousand visitors a month we should expect $1*0.01*60,000 = $600 dollars coming from click ads. Assuming id gets paid by impressions brings it up another $600. It's a fact that $1200 won't pay any bills.

I really believe id choose the wrong financial solution here. I'd gladly pay for a monthly subscription and or allow each individual server get paid by hosting ads of their choice on the maps.

I'm sorry if I come across as greedy or ignorant. It's not that I don't want id to get any money, its just that they're not getting money from the ads anyways.

Whether they are bringing in money from ads or not, this whole website is the project of a software developer to test out a new method of distribution. On top of that, they are providing all of us with a free game and pretty sweet platform to play it on. Here you are out of your own selfishness distributing something that disables ads. You don't see a problem here?

Remove the feature that allows you to disable ads and re-release this. Let them figure out what they need to do instead of fudging with their numbers. We already know id software will be adding premium accounts(most likely), but, until then, allow them to continue along the path they chose.

Actually if you read the Terms of Use under the General paragraph you will find

... (b) use any device, software or routine to interfere or attempt to interfere with the proper working of the Website or any transaction being conducted on either; (c) take any action that imposes an unreasonable or disproportionately large load on Id Software, Inc.'s infrastructure; or (d) reverse engineer, reverse assemble or otherwise attempt to discover any source code...

So we are all breaking the TOU by using this little script. I'm not forcing you to turn off the ads. You can choose to show them however you want. It's up to you to break the TOU by using this script.

Your logic is strange. Removing the crux of their current business model is downright foolish and selfish. There is no justification you can make. The rest of the features of this script don't effect the amount of money and data they bring in on a day to day basis (as far as I could tell).

You are an enabler. The main difference between ad-blocker and this script, is that you have control over this piece of software and you are a part of this community. This single feature has potential to be detrimental to the community that you are part of.

I don't use the script anyways, though I don't have a problem with breaking the terms of use of the website. I have an issue with a single feature, which undermines id software's efforts and poses more problems for them and in turn users of their website like myself. They can't provide their service for free forever. At least help them out by leaving the ads up until they implement another means of pulling in cash to their business model. Even if it is minimal amounts of money.

* I don't know why you brought legality into this. My point has been the same throughout, just been trying to make you understand that you are fucking someone over who is providing you a service for basically nothing.

He's morally opposed to hiding ads on a piece of software which violates the terms (read: LAW) to begin with. You can't argue the morality of supporting id (for something that they DIDN'T do, which is why you're using HIS code) while at the same time dismissing the fact that you are in clear violation of their rules, even if it had ads.

This is just another case of the users feeling like a modder has any obligation to the company, or to the community. Don't like it? Don't use it. Still complaining about it? Make your own.

There is no middle ground for ethics involved here since you already agreed (even clicked the big "I AGREE" button) to the terms, which were up to par by your standards of morality, and state that you wouldn't use such a program - regardless of the ad removal.

In turn, credit should always be paid by the modder back to the original software developers. The CPMA team does this by not redistributing the original pk3 files for quake 3. Similarly the developer of this script should acknowledge the debt he owes to id software by removing the feature to disable ads.

That's great. They're not supposed to.

As Carmack has said, it isn't a money-making aspect. IGA is even trying to sell the company to avoid bankruptcy. If you don't click the ads anyway, it doesn't matter if they are displayed.

Displaying pings would be something really worth downloading for. It shouldn�t be hard neither since you have the URLs. Ping the URLs and display the results. I did a quick search and it seems to be possible with javascript. I am sure it can be done one way or another.

Edit: It actually depends on what URLs you have and a URL of type "www.quakelive.com/#home/join/853130" is not what we are looking for :(. We need the cl_currentServerAddress.

Pinging servers from browser window is not a trivial task (I think it is practically not worth to do that way). This should be done instead at QuakeLive plugin level.

I can get an IP easily but as sk4ut mentioned its very heavy on the servers and is not trivial either. It would take a few seconds before you recieved the ping too.

Most of time I'm really happy when someone do something for free (warsow, cpm, digsby ect...) but sometimes i see things that are really stupid...Like this:

"I'm gonna block ads cuz it hurts my eyes...But I still want quakelive to be free cuz I'm a selfish ignorant"

Pop-ups are an annoying shit, ads aren't.

Ad blockers already cost jobs cause ppl are stupid...

Meh...

This can get complicated. Personally I'm opposed of ad blocking under the current business plan, but am for the right of its creation and use.

As a counter-example: Smoking in bars. I hate smoke. Smokers annoy me because the smoke they're smoking annoys me. It stinks. It hurts my eyes etc. So I'm glad that it was banned in bars here in Minnesota but I don't agree it should have ever passed legislation.

They've rewamped the server retrieving functions in the new update and as such the old way is broken. I don't really have the time right now to fix. I might rewrite the script entirely some day.

2.63 - Id has basically rewritten the functions that fetch the servers and as such the script would need to be rewritten in order to have all the "new" functionality. Such as faster live updating and more.

For now I've added coda's "fix" to make this script work with the newest patch from October 27:th 2009.

Had to reinstall cus of update, this meant typing in all the filters i used for servers.. what makes it worse is that server names have numbers after them now.. which means i have to type in the same country multiple times :(
