It would be a shame if this tournament has to be played online - so please id software, release a LAN version asap.

We would run the LAN tournaments in the same fashion as QuakeCon, no new type of release is required to pull this off.

from that i have heard, with current system running a lan event is quite hard & needs lots of hw, which isnt cheap either easy to organize. So, atleast imo QL needs better lan support.

well, you can't just provide stuff for all the lans all over the world, is this means we'll always have to stick playing online in lans for minor events or with friends? that's kinda sad...

i think WoW uses this model, and it supports ESL, MLG and it's own tourneys with it.

will be ever possible to host a lan for private lan party or for some lanparty in nations? We have a quiet few huge lan partys in Slovenia and at every lanparty Quake is included. Shame that we cant play QuakeLive instead of some other Quake. We tryed once on LAN with internet to play quake live, but there was so many people connected on the internet. Was impossible to play. Besides, it was a LAN party and would be nice if there was a lan support for Quake Live. I know it's not easy to make this support, but maybe you should release something for LAN support.

I'm happy to hear that, but also I think you should really release a version that allows everyone to set up their own servers. There are a lot of smaller organization who organize LAN-Tournaments (Dreamhack, the tournament in Prague, etc.) - they need a LAN version to be able to conduct a good tournament.
There are countless other advantages of be able to set up custom servers (which I already explained multiple times, but I could explain them once again, if you are interested to read them)

Suggest a system that allows people to set up their own lan games, while not raping the whole QL system. If you manage to do that, I think id would be quite willing to listen to you.

you can already spawn listenservers to play with bots, how would it be hard to put a button somewhere to spawn a dedicated lan server. it would be perfectly fine if you have to have an internet connection but the ability to spawn lan servers would be great for minor lans

make an application form for organizers of LAN tournaments and if they meet the requirements they get a temporary log-in for the time of the tournament which allows them to spawn local servers from the web interface.

requirements could be something like: website, receipts for rent of builing named on website, receipt of fee for networks hardware, etc.

The only thing I can think of is in order to spawn your own offline server, you would have to "download" the latest ads in order to play with. As in you would have to download that months/days ads before you could setup an offline/lan game.

This would not be a problem if you could just download the file and then upload it to the offline pc (with a laptop or iphone or w/e)

The trouble is not really with ad-system, but more in the fact that if a server application gets into public hand. Chances are that people will circumvent the whole QL website and just play on private servers.

how annoying would it be if the release of a lan server would lead to something like freeshards or pirated servers which are available in mmos and games like starcraft? it would probably split the rather small quake community even more - the standard quake live is providing can be seen as a big advantage of the product itself.


the setup ID is offering sounds very good even though they could play on online servers as well - the very same is done in wow. the ping from hannover to frankfurt is about 5-10ms and in the past the event had at least an 100mbit connection


ps: i notice the downside events in eastern europe are going to face with online only servers, but lets face it that the internet connections improve everywhere around the world and so do the hosting solutions for services like quake live server of id software. i would prefer to see them working on decent tdm and ca maps - especially the rocket arena 3 maps for ca and osp/cpm maps for tdm. would be better to focus on the really important aspects of the game!

Well id can give organizers the ability to spawn private servers, that would work nice for dreamhack e.g. I know ESL have that ability.

We (dreamhack) already got the ability to spawn online servers.

yeah, we (ESL) also can spawn online servers like a couple other companies and leagues too, which is great and already helped a lot, but we definitly will have events where online play won't be possible because they will be on nice uncommon places, but we still want to have QL there, but I'm positive that my colleagues and id figure something out that will work :-)

Dunno why everyone in this thread prays and hopes for LAN finals. Wake up guys. Of course they are gonna be played on lan. How can you even doubt it? ESL is big and I can imagine they may have early access to the promised QL lan capabilities through web or (worse) will use a replica for lan. Like they did for both QuakeCons. I hope for the first option.

well, the usualy procedure is that if the higher placed player,e.g. the winner, of the second tournament is already invited the slot goes to the 2nd and 3rd placed. And so on.
That way you would get more interesting games in the qualifier tournament which is good for the coverage etc. The same goes for the players who were already invited. I believe that is the system WSVG and ESWC MAsters used?

But of course if the qualifiers are simply short tournament, without additional prices and no real coverage there is no need to allow already qualified and invited players...

qualification cups will be short one day or two day cups with no real coverage and already qualified players won't be able to participate in the cups, because it would change the whole outcome.

the top players will fight each other in the championship so there will be plenty of exciting matches there.

European qualification won't start before october and yes it will be possible to take part in it from every country within europe. More details about that around the first october week.

That's mainly due to them being at war with their neighbours and thus cannot participate in their own region. I don't see how esports would have that problem though.

I don't think Turkey should be included in Europe either, as it is only half a city of the country that is in Europe. Though I understand why those third world countries tries to scam their way into being European.

Isreal has a pretty developed network infastructure, comparable to Europe. The majority of Kazakhstan does not.

there are reasons for and against in both cases, last season when it came up we ruled kazakhstan as asia, and sometime before that we included israel in europe
