Mayweather on paper, easily. Mayweather taking the fight and not waiting a few hours to see the winner of hatton / pac should tell you enough.
he's faster, stronger and bigger and loves come forward fighters. not to mention marquez is 33 (or is it 36?) fighting way above his weight class for the first time against a well seasoned welter.
that said, Marquez handled Pac's onslaught and there's much more to it that A being quicker than B (see Mosley - Cotto) and he's one of the (if not the best) technical boxer right now. if anyone is going to have a gameplan it will be him.
don't expect a good fight. mayweather has been boring for years and JMM is a counter-puncher. if he can build some kind of lead then some fireworks perhaps but I see PBF just pot shotting to victory.
marquez got too much pride. I would have made that pathetic nigger drain those 2 lbs, and fight him drained if he didn't make it anyway. god, fucking ghsdhguihasdghusdhgksdha
limit was meant to be 144. 147 is the welter limit, he came in at 146. yes, 2 lb is huge to those guys. i don't think mayweather ever drains himself, as he only puts a lb or two on but he'll probably go up to 150 come fight time. marquez not budge and will likely be lighter.
mayweather was never making that weight anyway, and he knew all along.
rumour has it he's been fined £600,000 now
so the only possible advantage he could give marquez has gone out the window. it's a farce of a match which means nothing. the only good thing that can come of this is if marquez wins and I hope to fucking god he does.
Boxing needs to go back to the drawing board. Smaller gloves and maybe even striking to downed fighters, the damage to fighter's brains would be ironically less than it is now and fights would be more exciting. It needs a tweak so that the fight is more likely to end than go the distance in the majority of fights so fighters must use a style based on that rather than a super-conservative outpointing style which, while technically impressive is incredibly boring and no more technically advanced than the style for a more precarious boxing would be.
What? I think you failed to understand me. Unless the rules of boxing became insane there is no reason to believe that technique would be significantly more or less skillful under a given ruleset, the focus would just be different.
you're implying boxers are conservative and like easy point victories by employing conservative styles. that shit does not work in competitive weight classes unless you are extremely gifted and good at what you do.
Marquez is considered a defensive counter puncher, go figure.
in your post below you admit to watching heavyweight boxing, which every other fucking retard judges the entire sport on. thanks to Lennox Lewis, yes they are conservative but that crap does not work in the proper weight classes.
it doesn't help that frauds like Hatton (for as entertaining as he is) and Calslappy are passed off as great boxers either.
heavyweight boxing is beyond awful. don't watch it, don't deduce anything from it.
very few use a defensive style to win on easy points
infact defensive styles go against you as far as judges are concerned. that's why it's not really employed outside of those that can _really_ do it like Floyd and the scary good Whittaker (who could make a prime DLH and chavez punch air for 12 rounds straight)
as for gloves, welters use 8oz as it is. smaller gloves will take away the boxing and employ striking, which would defeat the entire beauty of the sweet science.
also, there are a lot of conservative fighters who are technically awesome and never fail to give an entertaining fight from start to end. you're watching the wrong fights. which is another problem that needs addressing.
i'd take a look at the following fights...
pacquiao vs diaz
marquez vs diaz
margarito vs mosley
de la hoya vs mayweather
de la hoya vs pacquiao
cotto vs mosley
... and prepare for cotto vs pacqiao on november the 14th.
I'll give you the obvious chaps everyone seems to love, some are still fighting and some not with a few must see fights. These are from the past decade or so and then the people to keep an eye out for in the divisions.
Diego Corrales - Jose Luis Castillo
probably one of the best fights ever, if you can't enjoy this then I wouldn't bother with boxing at all. if you don't know the result already, do not spoil it with crappy YouTube highlights, get on WBVA and download it. If you can't then it should be on YouTube in parts.
Arturo Gatti - Mickey Ward
All 3 are astonishingly brutal and you not see more heart anywhere else. Similar to the above fight, except these two are not quite as good technically, but fuck me, talk about heart. Gatti is known as the human highlight reel.
Marco Antonio Barrera
Erik Morales
Juan Manuel Marquez
Manny Pacquiao
You can get almost anything by all of these guys but their best stuff is against each other. The best ones being the Morales - Barrera fights as it really is a true rivalry and they're fighting for pride. Grab anything Barrera has done and don't forget his Naz fight as it's a classic for most Brits. Of these, the only match that doesn't exist is JMM - Morales. JMM - MAB is the most technical of them all.
JMM - Juan Diaz. Even though PBF just made an example of JMM, he's amazing lightweight and below, with the most recent being against Juan Diaz. Action from start to end.
Mayweather:
All of his recent fights are defensive master classe and out of them he's only really been aggressive in the Gatti fight. That's a fight you should watch, or at least find a decent highlight of it. Certainly after watching Gatti - Ward. Mayweather vs the much bigger and prime Corrales is not that exciting from an action point of view but he effectively shuts out an elite boxer and makes an example of him either way.
Miguel Cotto
anything and everything as he ducks no one, entertaining as fuck and just a pleasure to watch box and he refuses to clinch. Margarito, Torres, Mosley, Clottey and Juadh have been his only competitive fights. Margartio fight is amazing along with the Torres one. the Clottey fight was damn good as well. watch his upcoming fight with Pac.
Shane Mosley
a tad iffy lately aside against Margarito (a must see) but he's bliss to watch in his prime. his DLH fights, Vernon Forrest, and Fernando Vargas spring to mind. the match against Mayorga isn't pleasing to the eye but the end is fucking ace.
Israel Vasquez - Rafael Marquez
Mexican warriors yet again, all three are technical all action fights from start to end.
Paul Williams and Kelly Pavlik
these fight soonish (I think) and both are machines, most certainly Williams. He's fucking huge and has freaky genetics and his punch output is scary, he's one of the most avoided fighters. Pavlik was awesome in everything except when he fought Hopkins (jumped two classes) and Hopkins did what he does best - which is a fight worth watching. Pavlik vs. Jermain Taylor are awesome fights.
Super 6 Tournament
some genius management here. somehow they have got the best (almost) 6 super middle weight fighters (Carl Froch, Arthur Abraham, Andre Dirrell, Mikkel Kessler, Jermain Taylor and Andre Ward) in a round robin style tournament where they will all face off against each other to determine the best. How they pulled this off with all the different networks, governing bodies, commissions, promoters, managers, camps and so on is amazing. At least it's one major advantage Dana has, he doesn't have to worry about that shit. Also, watch Jermain Taylor - Carl Froch. A perfect example of a guy with a limited skill set who is an absolute tank (Froch) vs a slick boxer in Taylor.
Fights to watch:
135 division is iffy, lots have moved up, but Edwin Valero (vorpal!), Michael Katsidis and Joan Guzman.
140 division, that's Pac, Timothy Bradley, Amir Khan, Victor Ortiz, Marcos Rene Maidana and most likely JMM soon enough and Juan Diaz. Ortiz - Maidana is a nice brawl as well, two prospects going at it early on. Well worth watching and very recent.
147 - Cotto, Pac, Mayweather, Joshua Clottey, Mosley, Williams (if he comes down), Zab (if he fights again), Margarito (if he's allowed to fight again) and Andre Berto.
154 - Williams, Cintron (iffy), Anthony Small (upcoming British fighter), and James Kirkland
160 - Sturm (if he grows a pair of balls) and Pavlik
167 - see super 6
175 - old man division, Hopkins, Jones Jr and Chad Daswon. Jones has been awful as of late but was bloody awesome against Jeff Lacy. A man of that age should be not allowed to punch that fast. Watch everything a prime Roy could do, not human. Hopkins is good to watch if that style of boxing doesn't bore you.
Cruisers + Heavies - Adamek and Cunningham at cruiser and avoid heavies apart from whoever David Haye faces but that'll be a slug fest either way.
can't be arsed with 135 and below right this second :D
heh granted im no expert, never got around to watch that much boxing. But what makes heavyweight worse than other weightclasses. Because the quality of the boxers are low at the moment?
the guys now are much heavier and bigger than they were back in the glory days so you need exceptional genetics to do anything impressive (tyson / holyfeild)
just need to be big and rangy now. the current champions have almost zero flow. it's horrible to watch. but it's a play it safe formula put into place by Lennox Lewis and it works. :( There's little glory, thus little interest for people to make the required effort.
it's amusing that 'boxing is dead' is thrown around a lot. given the fact that 2 or 3 of the biggest money making fights happened recently, mayweather generated 250 million in 07/08 I think.
why would a governing body not recognise a weight class?
different definitions for it, but I've checked and it's generally the guy with the most belts. belts don't mean shit anymore, minus ring magazine ratings.
PBF. Marquez spent most of the night hitting air, PBf on teh other hand spent his night hitting Marquez. A masterclass from Mayweather. I mean I expected him to win but he totally schooled Marquez who is no slouch. There was obviously the weight issue as PBF had no intention of draining those 2 pounds and rather paid 600K to Marquez for it. Time for PBF to man up now and fight Mosley or Williams or step up and fight at middle-weight as he looked big for a welter.

yeah, after seeing that it was an even bigger farce.
me thinks Floyd was a junior middle in that fight, which means he isn't too small (as if he ever was) for Cotto and Mosley. Probably had 15 lbs on Marquez.
DLH laid the blueprint for beating Floyd, he just didn't have the youth to do it for 12 rounds, Pac will.
time for this idiot to man the fuck up and stop making excuses. no wonder Shane got pissed in the post fight interview. always slagging him off, talking about his losses and then fights a 36 year old with 4 losses who jumped up two weight classes after showing lack defence in his previous two fights.
Cotto, Mosley or Pac. Williams would be interesting but he doesn't deserve Floyd just yet and I seriously doubt that freak could make 147.
idiots fall for this as well. annoying, because Floyd is nothing short of astonishing yet he's ruining it all. :(
yeah that was a dirty trick he pulled fighting a guy who is 36 yrs old and coming up two weight classes. Looked 158-160 to me. However after watching this I hope he fights Mosley.
I am big fan of Pacman but that would be a 60/40 fight in favour of Mayweather as again he would be too big & too strong for Pacman on last night's evidence, although Manny would definitely put him under more pressure and has speed which would leave Mayweather split second less to counter. We will have to see how Pacman copes against Cotto!! If he beats cotto I will be more confident of him giving Mayweather a run for his money. Hatton was not in the same class as these guys and DelaHoya looked to have aged a 100 years in that fight against Manny.
actually hes not, hes cocky and that in the promotion of the fights etc, but if you watch after fights etc he doesn't be little any of the fighters, and often says it was an honor to fight you etc etc
another thing is that, did you watch him on strictly come dancing? you cannot be a smug arrogant cunt, when learning to dance, trust me its difficult and you have to listen, even if he does have agile moves from boxing.
