I tried them, they have pretty good positional sound. I doubt they'll be good for anything but detecting sound, and they're gonna cost $300 USD. I tried them pretty quickly too, so they could be better/worst.

They are very interesting but we will have to wait for some real review/comparison.

If they really have an advantage over some very good headpones I will buy them, but I'm still sceptical.

I have not yet seen any headphone that would be capable to produce Z axis beside X and Y.Now at headphones u hear sound like forward/backward and left/right, cause there was no Z u couldnt be sure if its really up/low.From this vid a guy says they placed speakers inside of headband and the way I understood this sound then transmits through canals/tubes to the earcups.The idea is ok if u really can detect sound coming from above ur head or below, but sound quality is questionable if sound travels through tubes and there could be losses, hope someone that owns this piece can make a distortion test to check things out.To me this looks more like a good market scam and I wouldnt wanna throw 300$ just to check it out, but I could be wrong dunno... :)

Until now all those 3d headphones turned out to be fake...just drivers manipulating theres still only 2 speakers in earcups dont be fooled!!

The Speakers aren't on the headband to hear on the Z-axis, they are there because you have the space to put them there. ;)
The tubes have different lenghts to the left and right ear, so the sound reaches the left/right ear not at the same time and "Interaural time difference" is a major part of how we localize sounds.
Traditional Surround Headsets with 3-4 speakers per earcup totally neglect that fact.

Bad sound quality might be an issue with this headset.

no, that they might work way better than the usual surround crap and maybe are worth the price, real 3D would be nice but imho the Z-axis isn't that important for gaming

I think software solutions like CMSS-3D or Dolby Headphone, just better ones, are the future (maybe with head tracking).

For 300$ I rather go for a nice piece from akg which are class compared to the plastic gimmick from PsYk0-hiTek9000.Need something anyways for my nice tube amplif... :))

edit:Also Z would be pants tearing stuff for quake especially cpm players, only cs players wouldnt need it cause their maps are so flat (they dont even need keyboards)!! xD

Yeah, like some sound processing that could simulate the sounds like binaural recordings. That's still only so good compared to reality, but samples like that match box one (check out this video too for some more cool sounds) give me at least some impression of the sound going around the Z-axis. I guess single sounds will be harder to pinpoint compared to moving sounds like the match box sample.
Maybe not for location purposes exactly, but reverberations from gunshots would be pretty good with binaural too. Check out fireworks and thunder to get some idea of that.

And I'm in the AKG crew too with the K601 :D

jep, we can localize moving sounds way better than stationary ones, that's why we turn our head slightly in the real world to localize them

I hope we see the Smyth SVS in a more consumer/gamer friendly priced product in the near future.

After watching the videos, id say id still rather have nice earbuds that are light but just stereo, instead of a brick atop of my head
