I had an iPod touch for about a year, which is essentially the iPhone without the phone features.

It was fine, because my other phone was a piece of shit, and I used the iPod for email, browsing, etc. After I found out about the HTC Dream (Or any HTC HERO phone for that matter) I instantly said fuck you to the iPhone.

First off, the iPhone controls you, not the other way around. You have to arrange the apps the way THEY want it, one per screen, in their format.

You can ONLY have apps on the home screens, that's it. You can only run ONE APP AT A TIME. When you look at the bigger picture, the iPhone almost compares to DOS. You open a program, use it, close it. Sure, you can run APPLES programs in the background, but that's about 5 apps.

You have to do things Apples way when you own an iPhone. Jailbreaking is another story, but even an HTC HERO phone out of the fucking BOX is better then a jail broken iPhone.

I have an HTC Dream, I've run it both with the OS that came on it, and HERO. Assuming you buy a HERO phone, I'll explain in that perspective.

First off. you have many home screens, and can put whatever you want on it. You want the settings icon on every screen? No problem, you can do it. You can have them in any order you want, anywhere on the screen. Not only that, you can have many widgets on the screen. You can have a large digital clock with weather built in, your next event on your calender, and maybe 4 apps on the home screen, your favorites or something. You can have bookmarks widgets, twitter widgets, tons of options, on any screen.

The biggest thing for me, is the multi-tasking. Let me throw you an example.

The notifications area is a bar at the top of the phone. You slide it down, and it shows what new information you have, whether it be tweets, emails, MSN/AIM messages, or a txt (Also you can have a different notification sound for any notification).

So I'm browsing a website, and I get a txt. I pull down the notification bar, and read the txt by clicking it (it brings it into the txt program). Oh, someone sent me a message on MSN/AIM, I can go to that, reply, etc. New tweets? Pull it down, read them. New email? Pull it down, go read the email.

But what's so special? NOTHING CLOSES. There's no 'push' notifications or any other BULLSHIT. The programs just run in the background, like any normal operating system for a computer. You can just go into the program, and go back to the homescreen, and it continues to run.

This means I can put ANY application in the background, leave it there, and let it do its thing. Its MY CHOICE, NOT APPLES.

Overall, fuck Apples and their awful phone. You're not into control when you're using the iPhone. You're being told what to do.

Get the HTC HERO phone and you'll understand.

Oh, and it's open source. So, improvements from anyone.

Also, all your information is through Google. You can have your contacts (both phone and email), calendar, and email, through Gmail. This means that if you put a new OS on your phone or something, you don't lose that kind of information. Everything syncs back to each other automatically, so there's no need to manage it manually. Also, you can log into your Facebook through the phone. It can save it, and you can sync your phone contacts to a Facebook account. So when someone calls you, you see their Facebook picture (Sync is done automatically). You can see their information like Birthday and stuff through their contact card on the phone. This is all built into the HERO os and isn't anything you need to add.

I have HTC Dream (has multi-touch, and a physical keyboard, so I don't sacrifice the screen to type) and it has buttons. Yes, buttons, something the iPhone is afraid of. They do a lot, the MENU acts as a right click, very helpful for all apps.

Also, it has a SD slot. So, if you buy an iPhone 8GB and want a 16, prepare to buy a new iPhone. Me on the other hand, I simply get a 16GB micro SD card. I control what I want, not Apple.

The point is that you can multi task ANY app on HTC HERO, it's at your control. Apple restricts that, the best you can do is get an app that supports 'push', which isn't true multi-tasking. Their excuse was that background apps drained the battery too much.

I agree with what your saying, but it doesnt make the iphone a bad phone.. It is a very good phone with limitations.. those limitations of which are only a problem for very few people..

I was satisfied with my iphone for 15 months. It did everything i needed fine. Surfed the web, had wifi, had some nice apps, played music and was fast and userfriendly unlike WinMo

Then i got really frustrated with the iphone for several reasons.
I needed to run IM in the background and to always be avaliable. I couldnt do that, since as soon as the screen went black, everything shut down

I missed so many calles because the speaker was so weak and sounded horrible.

In order for me to check twitter for tweets i had to launch a separate app, wait for it to load etc.

Same with mail - i got a new email but i had to open an app to actually read it, i had to open sms to actually see what arrived..

Sure, the thing is great, its stylish and it has its plusses, thats why it was so popular.

In the end though, i got fed up that an app that does something very insignificant has a cost in the app store. To run bloody im in the background u need to jailbreak your phone - a tedious and unnecessary process.

And last but not least.
Every bloody person on the street has an iphone. And when you hold it when you talk, you look as if you talking to a brick. Also lets not forget the average mic and speaker quality...

So i said, eough is enough. Went on youtube, saw some videos of the palm, the htc win mo and nokias.
Then went to a shop to check it out. Hero beat everybody because its so ergonomically friendly, that i could never understand why phones didnt have chins before.

So now what i have is a phone that has everything the iphone has. Loads of apps that are free and of great quality.
Has multitasking out of the box, does proper push, feels twice as small as the iphone, has a better virtual keyboard with feedback and a better autocomplete system.

I can actually hear my ringtone now outside, instead of just feeling for the vibro..And if your in a meeting and the thing rings, you HAD to answer the iphone, this you just turn it screen down and it automatically shuts of the sound and vibro. So useful!

And the chib is great, it bends the phone towards your mouth and the very first call i made the person on the other end immidiately noticed that i sounded twice as loud as before and ten times as crisp.

On the downside, the battery doesnt last as long as the ipgone battery does, and the built in music player lacks an EQ. But iofcourse, unlike the iphone, you can always get a better browser or a better music app, or a better email client of the android market.

i cba to read it all in your post but it has push notifications now, and it's more than "the phone feature", without the 3g connection (let's say only wifi for the ipod) it would be useless.

and unless you're a complete retard you can figure out how to jailbreak and then you can use background together with kiriaki (cant remember spelling atm) and you can have very good multitask. this requires some memory for the phat applications though so i guess it's better on the 3gs.
the latter app works like you double click the home button and you get a list of current applications running together with a "favorites" tab, in which you can launch new applications. it uses backgrounder to minimize the current application you have going.

anyways heros support for flash is a big point but then again i prefer the interface in my iphone

Iphone has the BS Gillz just mentioned, Hero lags, has no soft. Dunno about battery life\etc.
Palm Pre has very low battery life and also lags when you open up more software.

Wouldn't get either of these if I wanted a phone, tho. And I feel bad for saying it, but IMO, the iPhone is the best choice if you need something to do quick browsing\etc. There will be no REALLY good devices in Android for quite some time, and up until then I don't see anything better.

There's a lot of shit about lags on Hero; most arise from one specific clock widget, and in the first firmware update that's been forceably fixed.

I've had *no* issues running mine at all so far.

I've heard that any of the onscreen "widgets" lag the phone and that overall, it's underpowered. Saw a vid on that, too. It can't be all from the one app...

Owning one, I can tell you that's not the case. Lot of Andriod haters out there tbh; plenty of people that spent far too much money jumping on the Apple bandwagon only to have something slicker turn up not much longer after.

Personally I'm a Winmobile kiddie and have been for years; I have the original SPV and most generations that followed. That said, nothing previous has offered me the experience I get on Android; HTC Sense is incredibly slick, and whilst it does hiccup from time to time, I struggle to find that anything other than a reason for the Apple fan boys to whine. When they say with Sense, 'make it mine,' it really does mean that.

really like my 3GS, the browser is still the best browser on any mobile device I've tried (not tried the htc)

on a practical level, the iPhone is a huge waste of money, but its like owning a luxury car, its not about really about the features, your paying for the build quality, human interface, style etc.

but features wise it has two big downsides imo:
1) battery life is shit!, if you forget to charge your phone one night you are fucked
2) no decent skype/voip support, at least I cant work it out

also the standard 3G phone is very slow

and if 3G coverage is shit in your area don't bother spending lots of money on a smart phone

Maybe difference between 3G and 3GS isn't huge but, as for me, it got some important improvements. Much faster (not saying that 3G is slow, check my previous comment :P), better camera (ye, I know that phone != digital camera but I'd rather not take camera everywhere and from what I've seen so far, 3GS camera is satisfying... believe me, 3G camera is horrible :< ) etc.

Haven't noticed 3G being slow... But yeah, some people say so (don't know why, mine is very smooth and fast and I got quite many apps, but maybe it's worse with 16GB memory). I wish Safari was faster, though :)

I haven't had an opportunity to try Hero but if you know what to expect from an iPhone, you shouldn't regret buying it :) I've been using 3G for 8 months or so and I like it a lot. Of course it's not perfect, it got some minor and few major flaws but it met my expectations (would be even better with 3GS).
The most important thing is to know what will you use your phone for (except calling and texting of course :P) and then pick suitable one. Some people are just idiots and they moan because they buy product aimed at different target (type of consuments).

My mate liked iPhone a lot but eventually he decided to get HTC Diamond (because he needed it for work). After few weeks he sold it because it was too fucking slow... (yeah, I know that Hero is a different HTC product).

It's up to you, think what do you expect from your next phone and check specifications of both phones :)

I've tried an iPhone a bit, a friend has one, and I prefer the 5800 over it by far. What is superior about it? The expensive HTC are good for sure, but they're expensive :P The 5800 has all tech except and FM-transmitter, and costs almost nothing.

Symbian is a slow and old OS. There are a lot of apps for Symbian, but there are way more cool apps for iPhone. I'm no big fan of Apple. I don't like its restriction and stuff. You can't really get into the hacking stuff as easily as for the Symbian ones.

The 5800 runs slower on 1000MHz compared to the iPhone, which has only 600MHz. The 5800 OS feels choppy and not as smooth as many other comparable phones. Moreover is the touchscreen out of date. The 5800 has a resistive panel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touchscreen#Resistive). A capacitive panel is better control-wise. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touchscreen#Capacitive)

My contract runs out by the end of next year. And I hope there will be some cool phones out by that time. I would like to have an iPHone (3GS) but it's just so expensive :(

I got a G1 and I aint complaining. I had to install custom firmware but now it runs cool stuff like telnet and wireless access point for my laptop. Fuck iPhone, Apple fanboys are trendy yet simple people.

I would also consider the Linux Nokia but it is just about released so expect some pain until it gets polished.

Oh and skip the Pre, it was Palms last shot at survival and since it is not really selling all that good (managers already got blackberries, kids already got iphones, who do you want to sell them to?), Nokia is supposed to be buying them soon.

Ye i know iphone is ok for just using it, my mates have it. But still, it has that Apple "you can only do what we let you" stink about it. Still not convinced Palm will make it. well yeah, but when my battery contact broke and I couldnt even turn the thing on or charge it, I just took it to the shop and got it fixed with the custom firmware still in it. doubt you could do that with iphone.

3GS is in a league of its own.

Yes Apple do some horrid and annoying things, but reality is the 3GS still beats the Hero without even trying, the Hero is also slower running applications and loading web pages. Overall applications are far better for the iPhone, Android is just a poor mans phone, no doubt will be good in 2 years once it picks up steam on new hardware.

Beats it how? Performance is the same with the two phones, there's no 100% distinction that one handles apps faster or 'better' than the other.

Fact of the matter is that the HERO does everything an iPhone can do, plus more, plus more customization. The iPhone is like the toy you give a child when it's 6. It's simple, easy to use, and does single tasking.

I see there was an update around 10 days ago that possibly fixed the Terrible Sluggishness. This was a major problem for me and I wouldn't touch the Hero because of it. iPhone is still noticeably smoother though.

Yes Hero has external memory, but this is slower than the 3GS internal memory, this is probably why browser speeds can be quite a bit slower on the Hero. Not that a few seconds matter much to me.

I'm a fan of the Hero, UI design is better and buttons are good for games, but then the 3GS screen is slightly better, music and software integration too. Flash is on Hero, but doesn't work properly, hence no Hulu, popular flash sites, aka youtube, work on 3GS.

We could tit for tat all day long, but the software available on the 3GS is far superior and this alone makes the 3GS a clear winner.

You cannot say one piece of software is more superior just because it performs slightly faster and smoother. Sure, the iPhone might be a small amount faster, and smoother, but HERO has more features, customization, and allows you to do things much easier on the iPhone.

Several reasons, first off, I don't get what ppl are saying about the iphone's limitations. You jailbreak it, you unlock it, you get cydia ready and waiting and a whole lot more info on the web to unlock or add any feature that the thing is capable of..

Second, its a quite powerful gadget considering its a phone.. I feel like i am using a computer at times instead of a phone.

Now I am sure that these other phones you mentioned also have quite alot of the capabilities that the iphone can do, but I just felt that people were using examples of iphones that were not jailbreaked or something in this thread.

My point is: Yes, fuck apple and their so called limitations they try to put on their product so they can stay in control. But the product itself is damn good and like any computer or OS, it can be modified to satify any of your needs.

As far as specs go- its a twin to the EU hero.

There's the G1, HTC Touch, and HTC Touch 2 (Not sure if it's out yet).

The G1 has a nice keyboard, (phone is also known as HTC Dream) but doesn't run the HERO OS, it runs a slightly older one, but it's still better than the iPhone OS.

All HERO devices so far are all touch, no keyboard, so as long as you're fine with that, you're good to go.

I really need some help here. I need to pick a phone for my company, and the reason for buying it is entirely to help with project management (toodledo, dropbox, calender, mail and such), wireless internet and making lots of calls. I have no idea what to pick, since I've been recommended the iphone 3gs, the HTC magic/Hero and some nokia phone.

I use Gmail, my company email, google docs, google calender and thunderbird, since I found Outlook 2007 to be slow.

It's really hard knowing what you want, but having had a SE W810i for some 2½ years for private use, the speed of the phone really is important. I don't want to wait for ages to open my calender or send a mail. I tested the Hero vs the new iphone today in a store, and the Hero was for example about 1-2 seconds faster when I just wanted to type a message (the speed it took before it was ready for me to type). So speed is important. Battery life is only important if it can't hold the juice for more than 24 hours. Ease of use and "fewest click to do what I need" also means something, but as said I don't know what I really want, and I don't know how the phones work. I have no experience with any smartphone, pda or the like. If there is a person here that uses a smartphone for your own business, and have knowledge of what you miss and found out you needed, then please let me know.

My partners have a crush on the new iphone, but after having red Gillz post, i'm not so sure whether it's a good idea.

The sales person in one store, told me that iphone had a better touch screen and hence was easier to use, had better internet connection and it was faster. It took it for bullshit since she was a 19-20 year old kid, but I'd still like some input from Hero/magic and iphone 3gs users.

Those 2 yr contracts are part of the reason why the phones are so cheap in the first place.

For me, here, you cant get phones with contracts that are sim locked. Its against the law, so ive gotta buy unlocked versions.

Last i checked, iPhone 3GS was 39990 thousand rubels, or 1320 us dollars.

The hero on the otherhand was: 760 us dollars. So a big difference there.
Thats part of the reason i decided to switch my iphone2g to a hero.

Now since we dont have those 2 year contracts bs, i paid 1.35 us dollars last month to my cell provider. :)) so atleast thats comforting.

Ballmer recently said 6.5 was an epic failure. They fired bunch of the people responsible for it, hired some new ones and do 7 almost from the scratch. Anything winmobile I ever touched was shit, even Symbian beats it.

Luckily I have a friend that's working with reviewing mobile phones. I've tried the HTC Hero, Touch 2 Pro, Blackberry Storm and Iphone 3GS.

Hero is really starting to look good and it´s definately a good option to the Iphone 3GS. Obviouslyy there's no phone that's best for everyone as it boils down to what you need your phone to do and what you expect from it.

Having tried all of the above mentioned phones I liked the Iphone the most. It's fast and somewhat easy to customize with a jailbreak and it suits me better. The only thing that bugs me is the multitasking part. I can't use spotify and brows esreality :( Hopefully they'll fix that.

Whatever you do, don't tie yourself to a 2-year contract like Tosspot said. The giant leaps HTC/Android is making now (Nokia isn't far behind) is definately going to put pressure on Apple and will eventually give us better phones for a lower price.

There will never be multitasking on the iphone. If they implement it, the phone will loose all of its speed and responsiveness.

Part of the reason it was so fast in the first place, because unlike most other smartphones iphone did 1 app at a time, and background apps didnt bog the memmory and cpu.

What really sux with the iPhone is, iff you dont like the iPod player in it, you cant change it. Apple doesnt allow it. And that sux.

doesn't matter if the HTC is better, the iphone is cool :o)

So, now that everyone has had some time to think about it, I need some advice :).

My heart goes out to android and the hero in particular, but I have the chance of getting the iphone 3gs for 25 €/month (+89 for the phone, or 0 € for the 3g, though the extra 8gig alone would be worth it for me), including hsdpa flat (though throttled to isdn speed after 300mb), t-online/mobile wlan hotspot flat (which are virtually eveywhere around here) and 120 mins/ a month (sufficient for me, especially since weekends are free anyway) . Oh, and a year of bundesliga, nice but nothing more than a gimmick ;).

Point is, tco would be 689 € (600 for the 3g). A hero costs about 420 € contract free, which would leave me with 11 € a month to match the iphone for calling and internet. Considering that, would you, as a hero owner, still advise against an iphone?

i'm paying 20€/month for palm pre +1hour phone/150messages and hsdpa/edge.

tho i bought the phone in one go, i think in germany o2 is the cheapest option, contract wise.

my roomy has about the same conditions with eplus&hero and he's paying 10€ more.

things i dislike about the pre:
-the fumbly usb port(obviously done on purpose to make you get the inductive loading station)
- the design appears unstable, but really its not, could be better tho
- the music player is done really badly, you should get the remix immediately

things i like:
- the webOS is just awesome
- i really like the little keyboard, after a week i could definately type faster on it than with t9, tho some people say it might be small
- the phone is REALLY small, that was kind of important to me
- the inductive loading station has style (and also makes you not have to use the fumbly usb port as often)
- you have the feeling you know whats going on since you can close programs (which atleast with the hero, is not that obvious/easy to do)

you should maybe also take a look at the tests on chip.de.
the best nokia phone seems to be really awesome aswell, and theres this samsung i9000HD or something which has a really nice camera.

Went with the iPhone in the meanwhile, but thank. Was only ever between that or any android phone for me anyway. Love the apps

Nexus one does look good actually, quite tempted.

I've regained some love for my iphone since jailbreaking it and installing backgrounder. I might hold on to see if Apple do announce a new version.

N900 or Milestone (droid)

Drop the N900. No applications or dev support behind it. And the software is still very rough...
