Nobdy can predict a winner of a race, all you can do is increase your chances of winning and studying form/conditions etc, but its still easy to lose and the safer the bet, the lower the return.

I play a fair amount of of roulette and i keep it simple, high/low red/black/even/odd, i have seen some exceptionally crazy combinations coming up in that game (the way i play it) which should be almost 50/50.

I have seen red (34) come up 3 times in a row, i have seen 13 consecutive reds and 11 blacks in a row, roulette is a brilliant model for seeing just how fucked up things can happen in the world of probability/gambling no matter how simple the variables are.

Horse racing has many more random factors/variables which is why i think its really bad form for a parent to actually encourage their kid to enter that world.

Being bumped by other riders.
Horse race fixing.

Plus the fact that almost every horse race has at least 8 runners at a time. What you make up by gaining better payback, you lose in probability.

The martingale/DBL UP is flawed. table limits for a start, or you're making so little its just no fun. Which can actually make you foolish because you get bored, so you could have grinded small profits for 30 mins only to lose it it 10 seconds. It happens!

With poker however they just take a small portion of the pot for themselfs because the money just goes from one player to another (aka in no situation do all players lose) which is why poker is a skill game.

There are also a shitload of ppl who bet their whole house on red at roulette.... and if they win, they do it again :S You'll have addicted players in all betting games....
Just be happy that with poker the casino makes less money than the guys who are actually skilled at it.

If you play roulette in RED/BLACK HIGH/LOW ODD/EVEN (the way i initially said) then its almost 50 50.

In other words, in most cases if you placed 1 pound on red and spun that wheel 100 time, I doubt you would win or lose more than 10 pounds.

Horese have infinitely more variables.

A) there are more usually at least 8 running at the same time.

B) Jockey error.

C) Horse havinga bad day.

D) Weather conditions can change throgh the race, so if you bet on horse that is good in the dry and random event like rain could screw you royally.

Those are just a handful of factors which are a lot more common than some of the annoyances that crop up in a game of roulette when you're playing a near consistent 50/50 game mode.

With horse betting you can get more information, just like in poker, whereas roulette is purely based on probability.

And well with horse racing... if you have a shitload of understanding about horses and statistics, you can take advantage out of others who have less.
I'm not saying I can, but statisticly if you know more about horses than the other people betting, you'll make money.

(this because odds are (indirectly or sometimes directly) set by the interrest people have in a horse/jockey.... kinda like here on esr the betting on fixtures have a variable payout depending on the chance.
Which means that in general on esr if you know more about the form of some players than others, you'll make e$r.... I usualy get close/into the leaderboards at all large quake events because I often play vs the people who are competing)

Professional in the sense that they have a desire and goal to make a common profit from it by using knowledge that can only be defined as professonal.

When most people bet on a horse there are two factors.
The name of the horse and the odd's. Studying its form is a stage further which imo is the same as playing quake 8 hours a day. you're obviously trying to to get somewhere with it.

Considering he was referring to studying form and betting low until the're more expereinced, I think its clear to ANYONE with normal IQ and no cock sucking iRC/gaming relationships that its something they intended on doing at a level which is much closer to the term "professional" given they would be making money from it and clearly demonstrated a desire to do so by looking into the same factors that pro's do.

Right im fed up of this debate over a professional, pro's come in many forms depending on the term. But for the pro's we are talking about my personal understanding for myself is; Approx Figures

Grade A Pro (2%) - A Pro that makes a fortune more then they could in a normal job eg athletes, footballers etc etc doing what they love

Grade B Pro (8%) - A pro that makes a reasonable wage, the same or a little more then they do in a normal job but doing what they love.

Grade C Pro(15%) - A pro that plays a game and is borderline and just breaking a living paying thier rent bills or whatever doing what they love

Anything else - Hobby (75% to 85%) I merged the grade C pro with the majority as they are struggling people, so can often drop into the losing majority.

I think he is right about the hitboxes. CPMA/VQ3 with 15-25 % smaller hitboxes would be perfect. Instead of weapon tweaking make it harder to hit.
Having to modes, one for pros and one for noobs is also a good idea.

He's right about movements too, it's stupid to miss a jump just to be able to turn, Quake 4 had a so nice flow.

Also about the hitboxes it would be cool to have bigger itboxes for the items. It's so boring to miss the yellow armor or small shards because you jump over them or aren't close enough.

I lost count of the number of times I thought I picked up yellow armor, but missed it.

Across quake 3 and quake 4 Toxic was way more dominant.
He came into quake 3 duel very late and there are still demos of him raping cooller and showing the sort of form which he was capable of (which he did in q4 when the advantage was gone. plus unlike Cooller he wasn't a kid.

When quake 4 came out there were hundrerd of thousands of pounds up for grabs over 18 months and some real talent chasing it (inc cooller), he won practically everything and even won the quakecon quakathon tourney.

I don't have anything against Quake 3 but I can't see any reason why it should be a sliding movement in Quake Live as well because it just makes the game run more smoothly and you don't have to accept that you have too high speed on the map so you have to just crash into a wall because you can't control your movements while having a high level of speed.
