How do I play Crysis and other games, without having black bars? I can't seem to find a setting to stretch the image in the ATI drivers. I had the 9.9 but just installed 9.10 but that didn't help.

just set your resolution to whatever the maximum is.
The black bars on the top and bottom go away, they're just there for the cinematics.

If you're talking about black bars on the sides because you forced 4:3 for some reason, then just disable that in your control panel for the GPU.

I don't have that option anywhere. Where should it be located?

I also experience a strethed image in Quakelive. I went to the options and selected 1680x1050 as the fullscreen res, and 1024x768 as the browser res. But i'm not sure what to do, to get a normal picture.

r_mode -1 & r_custom... etc. just like in quake3. i'm 100% sure there is "gpu scaling" options in your ATI drivers though because mine certainly have one :)

I don't know why, but I really don't have such an option. I read on the ATI forum that it's only present if you use a resolution that's lower than the native. I tried that but still didn't help.

120 hz and I get jittering/flickering/blinking or whatever you want to call it. The webcam didn't to a good job in capturing it, but you get the picture.

I have googled for ages now and tried a variety of fixes. Changed the power cable since it helped two users. Underclocked my ATI hard, since that helped a lot of people. Forced the graphic card fan to run at 100%. Changed port on the graphic card, checked I really had a dual-link cable. Installed the 2233rz driver on the Samsung website and the one on the CD. Reinstalled Windows 7 and tried Catalyst 9.9, 9.8, 9.10. No luck what so ever.

It's visible both in-game and on the desktop. I'm beginning to believe it's a problem with the ATI HD4xxx cards or drivers, from the threads on the ATI forum.

I've mailed Sapphires support, since Powercolor cards seemed prone to produce the problem. A new BIOS was released by Powercolor that supposedly fixed it.

did you try the omega drivers for ati yet? they fixed some of the issues i had with the catalyst one at that time.

Hi, I've tried a lot different since then. The "error" is that some graphic cards were designed to supply just adequate power/signal strenght or something to crt and 60hz lcd screens, but some weren't designed to give enough juice to 120hz lcd screens. When you have one screen attached in 2D mode, it delivers a certain amount of signal strenght , when you have dual monitors it takes some more, and the same is the case when you operate in 3D mode. But the signal strenght doesn't increase when you switch to 120hz on the new lcd screens, and that causes the image to distort and flicker. Some cards just happen to deliver enough strenght from the beginning, while others doesn't. At least that's the answer I got from ATI.

They are currently working on a driver fix, but they said it would take a while.

that makes sence to my ears.... it could explain my testing results i wrote before, where only card A would have troubles in system A using an XP driver. While it works perfectly in system B using an Win7 driver. Card B in system A using XP works perfectly too tho, but thats a slightly different card (4830/4850), which could get a different assignment in the driver

I think you could also fix the problem by flashing your videocards BIOS (to a 4850 for instance), but I dont have any experience with that. Look into it.

i read somewhere that the samsung montior only works fine with nvidia cards on 100hz and above...cant remember where tho :/

Viewsonic sadly still haven't released it everywhere in Scandinavia, and I really needed a new monitor since my CRT screen was starting to kill my eyes, so it had to be the Samsung.

Voo bro, I had the 2265, and I now have the 2233rz....the samsung is wayyyyyyyy better, and don't worry about the supposed slower response time on it, you can not tell at all. Doens't have the brightness issue of the vx2265, the colors are WAY better once you adjust them properly with the OSD (I found a site with guys who had great color values for it) the panel itself is way sleeker and nicer as well to. Buy it with confidence, I sent the vx2265 back. The samsung is definitely worth the extra few bucks, and I've seen the price for it drop to less than 300 dollars now anyhow! Ill even be honest, even if the vx2268 was available, I think i'd still like the samsung better because the panel just looks much nicer and samsung has had a better rep lately.

heres the site. Theres a few guys on there that seemed to know good adjustments and I tried out their settings for each guys post (about 2 or 3 guys who posted) and I picked the one I thought looked best. One guy even talks of a program he used to get really technical and get the values right, but I found just using one of those guys settings was quick and it looked great. I hope it helps

I can't seem to keep 4:3 aspect ratio when playing quake live. I'm in native resolution 1680x1050 and everytime I alt+enter to quakelive (with 800x600) it goes back to 16:10 aspect ratio, which I don't want, I want black bars next to my image (4:3). I can't fix it =[ . Any hints on this?

does r_mode reset to -2? what is your default mode? If its the r_mode thats not sticking you probably need to check if you have an autoexec or something like that.
mine wasn't resetting, but just showing desktop instead of the black bars when I used r_mode -1 and r_customwidth 1440, height 1050. I ended up just using r_mode -2 and r_mode -1 with customheight 1050 and customwidth 1680 in Q3 + cg_fov 120 to sych with QL. I've been liking it actually.

r_mode is 9 (800x600), its in my autoexec that doesn't change at all, its my pc/monitor that fucks it up for some reason

Not sure, I havent toyed much with that but I think its a bit of a bitch in quake live, the quake live forum is probably the best spot for this. I to wanted to play that way at first because it was used to 4:3 obviously from my last monitor but I'm telling you, you gotta go widescreen the way its ment to be its sooo much better, you see more, yet everything is the same in terms of size with relation to your fov the way it was before (u just see a bit more on left and right). Have you given in an honest shot, its wayy better I find. Than again I'm a fov 90 player so I could use the extra left and right sightage. I was worried that I woudlnt' like it at native res because players would seem too "small" to hit, but I find its perfect, not small at all

Do you have nvidia or Ati? Nvidia has that option on the Advanced Options/Display/Flat panel scaling on Ati i dont quite remember now :P have to check my laptop xD

It happened to me the reseting thing when i updated the drivers to some recent ones kinda rolled back to some 185 or something :=) new isnt always better.

I use the 185.85 ;) they work fine for me.

Lots better with 0 brightness 65 contrast in my opinion. Atleast the 100 brightness will burn your eyes.

It seems that I'm far from alone with this problem. I've found most problems with ATI cards, yet Nvidia also suffered from it with different LCD screens, but a driver update supposedly fixed the flickering.

I made a thread on Anandtech and Tomshardware. Hope some more users with the same problem show up.

UPDATE: ATI forums admin spyre says this is an issue with the clockspeed when the card is running in 2D mode. I tried gaming at 120Hz and it seems to work alright so far. ATI scaling is broken in windows7 - they even removed it from the newest drivers until they can fix it (I think).

However, I can't manage to get 120hz at any resolution other than native, even on XP. Though it seems some folk have managed by doing the same steps as myself :[

I have the same problem regarding 120hz being fixed to native resolution. I still haven't found an ATI person where this isn't the case.

I got scaling working with 9.7-9.10 (see the Anandtech thread). At least I can play without black bars now, but I still can't play in 120hz like some users are able to. These are the HD5xxxx users by the way, so perhaps there is a flaw in the HD4xxx design

Yea that's the same for me. I can select scaling (on older CCC) if I select a resolution lower than native and it seems to scale alright until I try to set 120hz, then it just gives me 120hz without the scaling :[

I believe nVc got it working eventually, though he didn't do anything and I'm not sure what card he has, just that he's on ATI.

I noticed last night that scaling 800x600@120hz was working, both to fullscreen and maintaining aspect ratio.

Sadly, however, I shut down my pc last night and today it's no longer working.... What a load of shit :)

Try to retrace every step you did, maybe you found a temporary solution already.

I didn't do anything, that's the thing. I hadn't actually bothered to touch any settings for a while but tried a different config (which was set to run 800x600) and I realised it was working...

It doesn't have many options , but you can make a 1:1 pixel mapping through your video card drivers. ( computer only )

Ati might have the best hardware, but atleast nvidia knows how to make drivers. This lesson was learned twice.

What do you mean learned twice? Regarding the 2233rz I've seen several nvidia users with driver issues (the horizontal line problem.) At least ATI doesn't have that problem

Just a quick update. I've found a solution with rivatuner. ATI still doesn't recognize it as a problem.

On another note, 120hz is now possible in all resolutions and not just native, with Catalyst 10.2

ATI drivers are so incredibly terrible, it blows my mind.

My laptop came with an ATI card, and for me to do 120hz to my CRT took hours. It's completely ridiculous.

Nvidia has always been really good about their drivers, they have a new driver like every week, and you can still download the old ones too.

If anyone plans to ever touch 120hz in any way, I always recommend Nvidia.

I agree, ATI drivers are atrocious. Ever since I upgraded to Windows 7 I've been unable to force VSync off (or on, for that matter) in any game.

I'm not buying from them again, that's for sure.

wtf ? are you serious ? have you tried uninstalling CCC and using ati tray tools instead ? i know this doesn't sound practical but ATT always worked wonders for me when i used ati cards

Yes I have and it didn't work unfortunately.
However something mightve gone wrong due to the stupid Windows 7 driver enforcement module bullshit, maybe ill try it again sometime.

Thankfully in most older games (which are usually the only ones that done have a Vsync off option) you can just force opengl, which has Vsync off by default (atleast for me)

but its still pretty fucking annoying, and stupid
