Q2 has some of the greatest maps out there - ztn2dm2 and ztn2dm3, and yet these guys still play this piece of shit q2dm1. talk about idiots

True, those maps are really good but they are not legendary maps as dm1 is. The Edge is the best map ID software ever build! =]
After 11years of Quake2 you still see 90% of servers with q2dm1 and players playing it! :)

And after 10 years of Q3 you still see 90% of Q3 servers on dm6/dm17...

but in q2 only dm1 :P and i doubt that about q3, imo about 55% it is the rest is ztn / dm17 / hub

No, HELL was far from the best. I have demos on some disc of me beating him in three straight games. The only three games we ever played though. =P
It was a BIG difference from playing against Purri which beat me over and fucking over again. You know I hate you Purri, but it's hate filled with love. ^^

I know one HELL from germany. He was really good at TDM and I think he was also playing for German NT with zyz... :)

I know one from switzerland that play for MiB but he almost never played duel afaik

he was by far the best in .eu for a 2 year spell losing only once or twice out of hundreds of games, that makes him one of the greats imo

when Q3 came out most of the best Q2'rs moved to Quake3 or quit. Purri & co are amazing and of course the skill level is much higher now, but q2 lost a lot of its competitiveness the day Q3 was released, same with qw.

hm, yeah, but Q2 could have much bigger scene if Q2 netcode was fixed. As Dahang already said before, he would have signed if the netcode was fixed. Any ideas who could actually help by q2's netcode except lazy mr rich?

Interesting tourney for sure! However, the tournament should not be best q2dm1 dueler ever. It should just be a celebration tournament for q2 and the edge after 12 years. It would be amasing if some of the really old players that quit could sign up for this one. Players like Blue, Odium, Mikko and probably 10 more should be able to play with less than 1 phone call away and with some days practise they would not make a fool out of themselfs :)

How ever, players like shub/thresh/makaveli, polosatiy etc have quit far to long ago to even have a chance today. Naturally!

Lucas should not be mentioned in the top5 ever lists, sorry! You are good, but not there.

He was active during q4 and also plays some ql still and is still very good. However, he has not played q2 that much, he has made a few short visits since he officially quit like 2000. He did play some years after just for fun, even if it was not more than some days/weeks here and there.

Wtf no Shub nor that pesky american guy Thresh? No offence to purri/damiah nor the rest of the current q2 guys, but how could anyone compare to the awesomeness of Shub? Fucking Shub and [MM] is q2. Of course they wouldnt stand a chance today, 10 years later, but when the game was at its peak they were the greatest.

I would say it's wrong to say that Shub or [MM] is the game of Q2. Thats such a slap in the face to the still active players. They were very good and without doubt one of the best clans, player/s in the world during 1.5 years. We are now 10.5 years after and we have seen players coming, going, coming back and still have a quite big player base. (in tournaments/leagues etc) The old 'legends' just like the ones you mentioned set the standard of play at their time. Should never be forgotten and never will. But new times come and new players evolve, just like anything else. I prefer to remember the old times just like you, but I would never go as far as criticizing the new players that have played the game for OVER 10 years already. In my personal case, even 12 years.

I meant no disrespect towards the ones that sticked with it. If I had the time, and the skill gap wasnt somewhat overwhelming I think I would much prefer to play qw or q2 since those games seem to have an active TDM scene.

Anyway, my point was, making this list like its been made is like making a "top footballers of all time" and excluding Pelé and Maradona - its bound to cause some upsets among those who cares about these sort of things. Having Maradona at #1 doesnt mean Messi isnt fucking great, its just that to many people Maradona defined the game.

Ps. Totti is of course #1 footballer of all time ;)

I kind of agree with making those lists and comparing old/new players. Thats why I sometimes don't understand some of the players that are mentioned while making these lists. Some things you can compare, some things you cant. There is also a big difference in being the best, or just being popular like the best. You give a perfect example with Totti. He is a genius in the game and a very good one. He might also be your favorite, but unfortunately his merits and records don't even come close to players like Pele, Maradona, Messi and a lot of others.

I know I will get some whine from a lot of people now, but since so many people seem to have a opinion, I will have one as well. I would not put Thresh in a list of best q2dm1 players of all time. He played WAY to short time in Q2. But if you combine his QW with his Q2, then we can talk. Also when I think about Thresh, I think about dm3/ptrip more than dm1.

If you like to try Quake 2, message me on IRC, and I will help you. For you to reach div.2 or 3 (3 is our lowest in TDM leagues, even if currently in #euroq2l we only have 2!) skill level in TDM would not take longer than some weeks, and I'm thinking with normal play time = 2-3 nights/week after work and/or a Sunday!! :)
You can learn the basics quite fast, and then you take what you know from Q3/Q4/FPS and you will be good in no time! I know you are a TDM player and miss that in QL just like me. Until it's fixed, check out Q2 TDM and you will be used to dropping weapons when QL is ready :)

If I had the time I would take you up on that offer, but the parenting thing seem to only get more time consuming rather than the other way around. Its all good though ;)

TBH they're exaggerating massively, and I say that as a massive Blue aficionado. In Q2 he didn't really do much aside from release some POVs beating Shub and Makaveli in practice at EDL finals. Also getting the invitation to join MM late probably helped boost him in Q2 fans' memories. Pretty certain if he had never played Q3 the majority of people suggesting he be top 5 here wouldn't be.

Yeah. Thats sometimes the case. People just like to remember the 'old days' that they were better or more gloryfied than they actually were. I was there, and still can't remember results from this particular player. Even though I have seen the few demos of the games you mention, does not make him top 5 of all time in a 12 year old game :)

I love Blue though, even more after I got to know him later on from Q4 tournaments. Really a good guy!

For your information I started playing Q2 in 1998. But yes, I was never known to the public until late 1999 since I did not have internet from home. Me and my friends played LAN only from 1998-2000. Damiah is one of the real old schoolers of Q2 as well. He has been in there since the beginning. He as well got internet very late. This does not change things, just wanted to say that you are wrong :)

Me personally had no intentions or any idea that Q2 had such a competitive scene the first whole year I played. The game might be dead to you and some other people that think that just because a game has €200 in price money here and there, and a lot of news on ESR that a game is alive. We do have a very active community from September to May. With various 4v4, 2v2, 1v1 tournaments and leagues, they have never stopped running since Christmas 1997.

yea as a casual game q2 and qw have always thrived, but on a competitive level, you could argue they both died when Q3 was released.

In q2's case... Shub & MM/Blue/Maka/Thresh/Immortal/Rufus/[lm]voo/blokey/mist etc. etc. etc. all quit. The skill level has gone up, but as a competitive platform it has long past it's peak.

You are right in one way. But same happens everywhere. Fatality quits, zero4 takes over, zero4 quits, cooller takes over, cooller quits, toxiq takes over, toxic quits, av3k takes over, av3k quits,cypher takes over etc :) People come and people go.

For one, yes some of the top q2 players quit for q3 when it came out. But also there was at the time VERY many that stayed. Even after Q3 release we had +100 clans left in europe alone.

Competition is always there as long as there is activity. Qw/Q2/Q3 are all games that have been active since the realease, and still today. It does not really matter what time a player has been the best, or on top, it's still comparable if you ask me. Sometimes more than others of course.

All the top clans left for q3. I remember at one point the UKCCL had 120 (!) clans. Five divions (with div1, div2a/2b/3a/3b/3c) etc. Once Q3 arrived the league pretty much died.

Also CS was released around that time too and that had great influence on the community.

Yes. I remember playing in that league as well at some point. Also Savage, jolt leagues/cups etc.

I'm not here to prove to I was dominating or anything. Just that the competition was/is always there.

The manner of the competition became more casual though, that's not to say the skill level didn't improve or the game wasn't competitive of course but it certainly wouldn't have been the same and Q3 clearly took things onto another level.

I know ping/location was an issue but a couple years back you had some duels with King on both sides of the pond that would indicate at the time that if you two duelled without the ping issue they would be very gg's at the least.
