Windows 7 isn't meant to do things that XP can't - it's meant to be XP with a shiny coat of paint. I do believe that new versions of DirectX will not be supported on older versions of windows, and you can expect that all support for XP by microsoft will end, leaving you with any 0day exploits that have yet to be defended against, and no way to protect yourself.

cpanel < sound < (might be missing something here) in the playback tab, click speakers < properties < you'll see blue sliders, mute the microphone (you'll prolly have to scroll down for it)


As for my experiences with w7.

It's ok. It's about as fast as my XP, maybe even faster. I haven't had any compatibility issues, driver problems etc., but I seem to have some mouse issues. It could just be my old DA fucking up though.

Yeah, the drivers aren't fully compatible yet. So there might be some games who run with less FPS than with previous Windows verison. But they're working on it, I hope. I won't go back to XP either ;)

1. I have the retail of Win 7 and I love it. Are you using the RC?
2. My Aero won't switch back to default after I quit QL. So maybe you gotta update your Win?
3. I'm using an X-Fi as well, and no problems so far (Vista x64 driver, I think)
4. You can disable that new taskbar-preview feature (just google for it, there are several ways), tho I really recommend using it: once you've gotten used to it, you'll love it ;)

ATi X1900 + Windows 7 doesn't go hand in hand it seems.
I've had big issues finding a driver that doesn't cripple my framerate to 1 fps in QL.

Eventually I managed to get it to work by overriding the dll-file with an old one for XP (Catalyst 8.2, iirc). While QL now works for me I get a score close to 1.0 by the Windows 7 Aero-scorewhatever-test which means my computer is not good enough to have aero enabled :/ Crysis runs fine though :)

Yep, I've been thru the exact same problem. I had the x1900 as well and couldn't run Quake Live with more than 1 FPS. That was back on my RC for Win 7, so that might have been fixed for the final version. But I can't tell, since I'm running the full version now and have a 4870 :/

Have used XP x64 since 2005 without issues since late 2005.
There where some issues in the beginning but after SP1 it actually isn't a problem what so ever.

Unless W7 can boot under 15 seconds (which XP atm does) and provide some performance gains other then the copy speed i don't want to change to W7 x64.

Tried it for a couple of days (W7 x64) and when having certain mice you will not be able to remove the buildt in accel due to it not being in drivers. Changing the accel parameters on game boot (Vista SP1 style) doesn't do crap either.

Having a NAS with samba where you have a home-directory won't work in W7 due to it not being indexed.

Having start-menu on one screen and toolbar on the other isn't possible in W7 (Atleast nothing is found on google which works)

Classic start-menu isn't possible anymore as it's hardcoded away. (Yeah you'll get use to the search and new menu buildup....)

Most drivers aren't fully compatible yet (GFX, printers, scanners, webcams etc..)

Bluescreens happen now and then on x64 with DA/Nvidia/HP drivers installed, unsure which triggers it as bluescreen is more empty then ever.

Incremental Backup Problem. Win7 x64 is backing up the entire system again and again, eating up tons of disk space and extending backup jobs that should take a few minutes into hours.

Windows XP Mode not compatible with every motherboard. Gigabyte have some issue which is resolved by updating motherboard.

X given bloatware stuff getting installed with W7 depending on release, seller etc. (Still depends on what you call bloat.. )

Power Option Issues with ATI and Nvidia cards when going into sleep/hibernation.

All in all I'll wait to atleast SP1 before thinking again on moving to W7 as XP x64 have now been running for 3 months ++ without reboot, issues, complications, lags or problems what so ever.

Had to try a newer version of W7 (RTM + updates) to see if things have become a bit better, but all the former ones where the same and there seem to be some new ones aswell:

Thumbnail on taskbar is broken for winamp (randomly working on classic skin), itunes (randomly working aswell) and minimized programs. (Know bug and same issues with Vista, 50/50 about who's fault it is..OS or program)

Running fullscreen game on second monitor will result in 90% of the thumnails in the taskbar being broken, smeared, blured etc..

There is glitch with Weather gadget, if not maximized, the control panel for the gadget on the right of it wont be fully renderd.

Tooltip for certain folders will display very unprecise values (Windows for instance.. larger then 8.88 MB)

The 'open' button at the top under under navigation address bar will only affect .exe files and folder and be displayed 'broken' when highlighting a none .exe file or folder.

Scroll issue somethimes happen when scrolling in Libraries (makes everything compact and look like it's zoomed out to 10% then refresh and it's back to normal..)

Deleteing something then minimizing all open windows, choose 'Empty Recyclebin' there will be no questions asked and nothing happens, maximizing every window will then display if you want to empy the recycle bin or not.

Changing the icon size from large to small, the thumbnail previews and aero peak are gone, restart a couple of times and suddly it works again...

I saw them, but the only download links I could find was 1/8th of the real drivers and you had to pay $30 to get all of it.

I never upgraded to vista. I'm still using XP, but whenever I use someone else computer that has vista running on it I feel kind of lost. Maybe it's just because I'm not accustomed to it yet, but with every other windows from 95 up, everything was in the same place.

There's no menu bar at the top of each window ? I can never seem to find certain system applications and wind up having to use the "search" for them now. The start menu is awkward.

Is Win 7 the same way like Vista, or is there any way to make it run with the previous 95/98/me/xp interface?

Defaults to on, but you can disable it.

Windows 7 is basically just Vista patched to be as good as XP. They did change where some things are, and modified the interface a bit, but you can't change a whole lot. It just takes a little time to get used to.

I like the new startmenu, I just pin the most important programs permanently and can acces the less frequently used programs by pressing the windows-key and start typing a part of the program name + Enter (don't even have to wait for the results to show up).

I use Windows 7 Ultimate, and the lates drivers for my X-Fi Fatal1ty (the first version), and it works perfectly, filename SBXF_PCDRV_LB_2_18_0013.exe. They were the latest when I installed at least. It's only the control panel, no need for anything else installed by Creative.

How did you fix the aero/QL problem?

I updated Windows, seemed to solve the problem.

So sound is fine, and so is QL. Basically, everything works. My only problem is that I can't see a SINGLE thing here that benefits me. Everything works just the same as XP, slightly slower, prettier interface, but still quick. In terms of features, I'm not taking advantage of anything here. There's nothing here I'm doing that I couldn't on XP.

So, over this weekend I'm going to do a backup and go back to XP. Maybe it's nostalgia, maybe it's that QL runs a bit faster, maybe it's Explorer. Either way, there's no sense in me using this operating system.

Windows 7 isn't bad folks. I guess just not my cup of tea.

Switching to Windows7 as soon as I have time because it is better than Vista by default.

ofc i do, anyway i could change it to 120hz, works flawlessly.
the problem is that since win7 it doesnt allow to use any resolution which is not in the list of default resolutions @ the monitor internal flash memory(no single CRT has >85hz resolution there), so either you remove one of the pins in the vga cable so the interface between PC and monitor is switched off so windows ignores it and allows to set whatever you want or there's also a way to override that flash memory via messing with drivers and stuff(braindestroying, was trying for few hours, got annoyed and just broke the pin :D)

dunno about all the details, I just entered some problems with some games coming with default high refresh rate, according to my display, which btw is old so it can't go over some values anymore, rivatuner worked very well for a simple task like that

custom resolutions works in test mode, but don't add in the list. Old reforce doesn't work either. rivatuner & coolbits don't unlock it. Even went through the editing of .inf files for both the screen (edited windows default since my old display driver doesnt work here) and the gfx card, didn't work either.

Next step is trying older vista x64 nvidia drivers but I don't have much hopes.

If I don't find a solution pretty soon (I tried lotsa stuff already) i think i'll get rid of this fucking shit.

Were you able to get same sensitivity as on windows? I didn't have time to look into this, but it felt extremely off? At least it doesn't seem to be tied to X11 sensitivity, but I have no idea. I would really just like to immitate the Windows sens at 10 for my base sense.

in what game ? haven't reinstalled them yet, but in my previous install I know I had to use challenge q3 to get direct/raw input (thus almost the same sensation as in win). in_mouse 2 should do the trick in ql (+ the stuff to remove accel in linux, don't remember the cmd). I'll look into it tomorrow or smth, i'll tell you what.

QL has the most appeal for Linux, me thinks. in_input 2 seems like its not tied to X11, and accel, but still feels vastly different to XP/W7

You can try this to remove accel completely, but keep in mind that the base input will still be different than on windows. (even direct input on win and on linux get different feelings, but without accel it becomes easy do adapt fast)

well tried 7 a while back but most games didnt work with more than 60hz on my crt, not even with tools like refreshlock so i went back to xp

Heard some semi decent things from people I trust but none of them made me go "yeah I need that now".

The truth is there isn't really one solid reason to upgrade to win7.

its a bit like the wheel, in order to offer something truly new over xp, MS needed to re-invent the wheel and that's impossible because of hardware and software requirements.

So they're in a postion where they need to keep making money.

So they release vista, a slow shoddy OS which was purposely like that in order to lower the publics expectations (Easier than inventing a new wheel) of what an OS should be like then low and behold they come out with windows 7 which gets rave reviews in no time at all.

Had so many people not even entertained Vista in the first place (but then new pc's came with it on-monopoly FTW) then the way they would have perceived Windows 7 would not be as big of a deal as some people make out.

My office 2003 does everything I need.
It runs all the programs I need, most of which seldom if ever exceed the 32 bit OS and we're talking fairly high end apps here.

So the question is do I want to upgrade to a fancy looking OS which does not really do anything of the one I'm using now and runs everying I have how I want it?


Maybe in about 2 years when hardware moves on enough but for now I would ratehr guarantee myself another 2 years of reliable computer use than jump on the bandwagon.

Just an exploit that has yet to be used in any way, that someone has saved for some purpose. Most people saving these exotic exploits are doing so for some specific reason, but they lose some value if the majority of people upgrade. I love win 7.
Have no problems that bug me(so far). I have the Creative X-Fi Platinum as well, and it works perfectly as well. You may need to tweak some of the audio settings though. But it's a lot easier than in XP

Nicest thing ive noticed is when you do a clean install and win 7 doesnt have drivers, windows update automatically downloads and installs them on its first boot..

Other than that, its stable, reliable and fast, i've not had a single person ring me up and say they've had problems with it! How awesome!
