The earth can only handle a certain amount. We are pretty close to it. Soon wars will be fought just for space to grow food.

Actually there aren't enough resources, we're already consuming more than what the Earth can offer in a sustainable way. This has been going on since the mid-70s when our ecological footprint went over one planet Earth.

Well sustainability is another thing, but I think we should cope for the next 50 years at least. What I meant is that right now, there is enough food for everyone on earth, but the distribution prevents this from happening.

food is just one thing, overall consumption is exploding seeing as countries like china grow with 8% rates and have huge increases in life expectancy. we're already using up more than the earth can deal with in the long run, and the real resource needs are only about to kick in. if everybody was living on western standards we'd use up like 4 times more than the earth can reproduce (rough number), don't have to be a genius to figure out that there will be some kind of shortage sooner or later. also growing a shitload of rice or wheat and providing water for humans is one thing, spending shitloads of all these things for cows and swines so you get nomnom tasty meat is on a whole different scale of resource needs. as long as markets do not work the way that sustainable development and protection of essential goods are promoted, this planet is going to be fucked within decades, be it people just starving or getting the shit bombed out of them/slavery.
you mentioned distribution, fixing that won't be that easy without major and fundamental changes on global scales seeing as 20% of the population use up 80% of resources right now, and these 20% sure as hell have no fucking interest in lowering their standards. ever.
