I think the new weapon balance is far better. Not perfect, but to say they're all minor tweaks it's a vast improvement.

You see multiple weapon fights, more aggressiveness and risks, faster paced games even when they are playing a defensive game. Players are willing to engage and fight for items. A lot of those IEM moments would not have occurred if VQ3/CPMA was used.

I do think QL is better as far as gameplay is concerned and in general it is a better platform although a few things suck about it. Gameplay, platform and the (badly executed) website are better than stock VQ3.

It just lacks the maps and the whole private server shit, which is a shame as they're the most important things.

The net code is arguable and works both ways. It's buggy and pretty annoying at times but extremely playable and likely much better than the majority of other games. The weakened weapons probably create some sort of placebo - as in VQ3 weapons just made it seem too good. It isn't perfect but it's more than playable, calling it downright shit is just moaning for the sake of it.

That's probably very true and I honestly wouldn't be at all surprised if that really was the case. However I have two reasons why I made the move to QL and never went back.

1.) It was something new and different and I decided to give it a shot for the hell of it and it ended up sticking.

2.) Everyone else did it and its rather difficult to find someone to play with now unless I'm on QL and I want to play quake.

I went where the full servers went. QL isn't as bad as you want to believe. Sure miss q3wcp9 though. But w/e. I just want to play on full servers. Not to mention people who play cpmctf are elitist/whiney bitches always complaining about vq3.

I was able to get back into Quake since the middle of 2008, I didn't because I found it just too damn hard to get everything sorted. I needed to download like 15 different things, setup my cfg, then figure out how to browse servers (FAIL) etc. etc. This was just far too much time than I was willing to spend back then.

QL allowed me to just install the game, setup my cfg and start playing. If I want to find a duel, it takes me 60 seconds. It's just as easy with any game type.

It may have been easy for the guys who have been playing the game the same way for the past few years, but for me coming from South Africa, being removed from MY setup, (Which had also been the same for a few years) Made it difficult.

I think many of the most important aspects of the game have been done, and the few that are outstanding will probably be done soon. I do really think that more maps should be added, however at the same time, this period of no new maps is allowing us the learn the existing new maps well before more are introduced. If new maps were constantly added most likely no one would be will to give them a try.

Except CPMA offered solutions, whereas QL offers problems. The only reason people didn't want to play CPMA was because it wasn't perfectly the same as OSP. Cpma felt more like tweaked trashy UT than it did Q3. Everyone who still plays cpma is in love with a different game than Q3 because thats what it is - it looks like q3, it has q3 maps, but it isn't Quake 3.
OSP was what took baseq3 gameplay and made it amazing for tournaments, and that is the one great thing that has come with QL, classic awesome q3 feel. And thats why nobody gives a shit about cpma anymore, except the promode newbs.

QL is all about CA, and if you were like me a CS convert to OSP ctf why the fuck would you be excited about playing a gametype exactly the same as CS?

Well, we might see what we saw with Q4. Everyone just got tired of it, so ESWC went back to Quake 3.

I think I rather play Quake 3 ONLY because of the map issue. If we want a new map, it's ID decision, not ours.

QL is all we really have. We need to get people to play Quake to keep it alive, we need move blood. Quake 3 won't give us as much new blood as Quake Live.

I think we should wait a year or two and see what happens, things might change from ID in terms of map support.

Obviously you didnt know that quakelive is STILL IN BETA PHASE.

as far as i know, beta games usually has bugs and arent perfect yet.

and imo quakelive is far more enjoyable than OSP / CPMAVQ3. Even in its current state.

It provides less choices with regard to maps, but it gives more choices when it comes to players you can play with.

With QL it is not a problem to find stuffed instagib, CA, FFA, TDM, CTF servers or arrange a duel.

And what is more important, you will have fun cause you will be on par with your opponent(s).

Also why I like to play QL because it is christmas time every other tuesday. :)

And as with real christmas, you never know what you will receive as a gift and usually it is 99% useless shit.

I never played Q3 and I found that I enjoyed QL. Why would I bother to DL an older and similar game when I can play QL for free from the browser?

As syL said. More players. It may just be a temporary influx, but that's pretty much all Quake3 (in any of its forms) has.

Overall QuakeLive is better for a crowd. Easy to install, easy to play. I believe that ID wasted too much time doing all web adaptation, Its fine but it wasnt really necessary.

Quake Live will sustain Quake's life, it was needed as VQ3 & Q4 scenes are already dead and CPM dies. (Where is this new fast-paced-cpmlike-standalone game? It was called... PMX?)

PMX is still being developed but I'm not sure how much it'll be played to be honest...

Well arqon is still talking about it on the PM forums as if it's not a dead project so that's as alive as necessary really.

As I said though, I doubt all of CPM's already small community will switch over to it (it could be shit after all) and I don't see many outsiders playing it more than once (and I'll be amazed if that happens) so I don't see the game going very far :/

I play QL because:

1, Its easy to get up and running after a re-install
2. Theres more players.. hardly no bs waiting on servers..
3. New players
4. Same skilled players on a regular basis
5. I find them both just as fun to play
6. A breath of fresh air

I could probably go on a few more, but fuck it!

I play it because I can find a game any time of the day no matter what.

You didn't really see many (successful) rl/pg charges under cpma's reign. In ql, you get a few in almost every match. Being aggressive pays off more due to the shorter timelimit - if you manage to build a nice frag advantage, and many people trust in their skill enough to weight that risk against the possibility of losing a bunch of frags.

Well, let's see:

1) The new weapon balance suits me better (it's not as aim intensive (yes, my aim sucks :D)).

2) I can play a game any time of the day, every day.

3) No skill-level related headaches, i know what i'm getting into every time i join a server.

4) Don't have to fuck around with net settings (that was a legitimate problem for me with cpma), a few small tweaks here and there, that's all it took to play comfortably.

5) A big player base - new players, old players, casuals and professionals. The game feels alive, and that is very important for me. I hate playing games that feel desolate and empty/have active but small, hard to integrate into communities.

Maybe not legit enough reasons for high tier players, but i don't care, i'm having fun, and in the end, that's all that matters.

4) fuck around with net setting? :o
like 3 or 4 commands that have to be set once to get the fucking best netcode on earth???

Took me forever to find a stable combo of laghax, xerp, optimisebw, nudge and predict.

Not really, by the time i figured the perfect formula for my connection, ql was out. :P Still, cpma netcode is ultimately superior, but that is beside the point.

everyone talking about weapon-balance etc should think again since QL is going to have cpma netcode if i got that right.

QL ..is made for mass appeal ...with ads in it (!) and depending strongly on the internetz for downloading stuff...and what not...
if internetz break down..i go play quake3 with bots..or defrag..

i think i´m going to get cheats for quake live and mess around in high tier duel games, that should do it :P
