I have Geforce 9600GS or some laptop equivalent in my XPS M1530. I played Q3 on it at 125+ without slowdowns before :)

It works on my Archlinux system flawlessly.
Maybe it's the configuration of your distro or even your distro that SUCK SO FUCKING MUCH.

Or maybe it should work on the fresh install of most popular DESKTOP DISTRO out there, Ubuntu?

Well i don't know about the newest version of ubuntu but i think you don't have the proprietary drivers enabled with a fresh install. So if you haven't configured anything try to see what drivers your ubuntu has enabled.
In fact to have QL running smooth on Linux i just have the proprieteray nvidia drivers enabled and no fancy effects that eat too much ressources (compiz, compiz fusion, beryl for example). At the moment i'm using KDE4 but i played QL under Gnome till a few weeks, so the DE shouldn't be a problem.
I don't see how the game would be responsible for what i see on your screenshot :x

Are you patronising me? Of course its "configured". It even runs Quake 3. And a ton of other things, including QuakeLive in Windows 7 in VirtualBox.

Me neither. Things don't have to just work. What the fuck, am I supposed to just be able to open a website and be able to play QuakeLive? Ha.

Anyway, it works better on ubuntu on my laptop. Just goes black after changing to fullscreen. I'm sure that's my fault as well. And if someday the moons align and it works, we will be able to say that it's 100% perfect.

Well then try asking help both on ubuntu forums, ubuntu irc channel and on QL forums. It's more likely that you'll get a better help there than on esr..

Works on ubuntu at home actually. Thanks for advice, but I don't think I will/should bother. Maybe they'll look at feedback and trigger 'postprocessing', 'alsa', 'oss', 'x', on their own. I'll try it next year =p

Anyway, archlinux is great for server/tinkering it seems, but pacman is bit too dumb if you just want to get on with things, apt-get/ubuntu repos seem to be least hassle. FreeBSD > * anyway :)

I like how slim and up-to-date arch is, kind of missed that on Ubuntu. Arch is great fun to learn a bit more about your system and mess with random things, not sure if it's suited for servers that much as chances to break are probably higher than with other distributions. Would love to use BSD but apparently it doesn't like my soundcard :/
