First time ever Quake tournaments are played on decent LCD's!

didn't dh use 120hz LCD's last time aswell? or was that a smaller dh? I remember someone posting a link where you could buy those monitors which had been used at dh in irc.

yeah we used them at dreamhack summer this year also. Although counter strike snatched most of the monitors to we only got to play the finals at 120hz lcds.
we're gonna have them for all games this time though.

can't think why a game like cs would require fast update rates ;)

i dont really get why a1r-r41d and son1dow seem to be hating though :( i can understand that as a quake fan you would wish for bigger prizes, i am myself. but im sure the organizers/admins are doing their best to get the most money and the players knew what to expect anyway and still decided to play. the fact that in the past there have been bigger prizes for the same level of competition doesnt mean this wont be awesome aswell

You really need to understand this:

You can not simply go to someone who earns money in the gaming industry, say "We are really good at this game" and demand that they give you a share of their profits.

It's their money, the money gets payed by casual gamers for a BYOC LAN.
Pro gamers have no share in that. They should be happy that they get prize purses like this at all. If they want more money they should really consider getting a real career first, maybe even organize a LAN themselves. So then they can give all their profits to greedy gamers, instead of keeping it for they work they did.

The gamers do not work for dreamhack, therefore they don't get to demand any payment. At all.
At best the gamers "work" for a team, but there is no contract with Dreamhack whatsoever.

No, the tournaments are a little extra, a side attraction, which is worth the 60.000 + effort for organisation (possibly the same amount) but not more.

Are you really believing that if they cancelled all "Pro" tournaments, people would stop going to Dreamhack?
They don't need you to be there. Much the opposite, the competitive scene does need them.

Instead Dreamhack could invest the same amount of money to having a stage hire several livebands fur their visitors.

But they do give something back. They pay enough that almost all best players in the world are there and have great tournament, They care about getting 120hz monitors.

Money is nice as it will bring more 'top' players who try to earn some money for it and more money brings more attention so also more people playing the game.

Atm I think the pricemoney has become realistic in compare to the prices in the early 2000s. It will get better in time, but slowly.

I play the games for fun as I don't have the talent to ever make money with it :D

the money spent on gaming tournaments in an event like this is marketing and nothing else. quake doesn't have a large mainstream following and to even get this much money for a very mainstream event is actually very gracious of the organizers.

if we had the same pro gaming situation as in Korea (the only real pro gaming scene) this amount of price money wouldn't be much and would probably not attract the best players. as it is now, 60k is a good amount for the current situation.

yeah, well, a1r-r4id if I took my laptop go to Dreamhack and answered a few mails from work, I too, would WORK AT dreamhack. Maybe I should do that, because apparantly that gives me the right to demand payment...

What people need to understand is that Dreamhack didn't start as an eSport festival, that side of Dreamhack has developed only the last couple of years. At it's core it's just a huge LAN where gaming enthusiast can hang out and have fun.

The eSport arm of Dreamhack is growing every year but it's still just one aspect of Dreamhack as a whole. Hopefully it will grow bigger but right now this is what we can expect.

Another thing people should keep in mind is that Dreamhack hosts 2 major events (DHW and DHS) and a series of smaller LANs every year. If you sum all the money they give out every year it's quite a lot.
