install the nquake pakage.

the config.cfg file in nquake\ezquake\configs has it all. just check it out

the binds are listed aplhabetically at the bottom of the cfg. the 'set' stuff for the weapon switch is somewhere above.

these weapon scripts work kind of like you described.

for example, you could bind Q for "rocketlauncher"

and pressing Q would result in getting a scribt binded on mouse1 which changes to rl and shoots upon pressing, and when releasing mouse1, it will change back to boomstick.

you can also change the sets in such a way that pressing a button will shoot the weapon, and not bind it to mouse1 first. you'll probably see what to do

But whats the real point with that? In what situations would you use that? I guess for spaming? Because I find shotting with "Q" or keys like that so annoying, compared to mouse1 (changing to that weapon, then shootting with mouse1 whatever weapon you changed to). Maybe it makes sense to use this with the SS to use it as a finisher and save time, but I can't think of more situations where using even more keys would be an advantage.

people use it to switch to lg and then back to rl i believe. used because you have rl out primarily. less buttons to press when you have that shaft opportunity arise.


dont bind it to something that would effect your movement, use mouse2/spacebar

It's only really useful in 4on4 where you have to avoid dropping weapons to enemies.

Anyway, the ezquake menu system was recently updated to include basically every setting you will ever need, including the auto weapon switching commands. There's no need to go messing about with commands you don't know in configs anymore.

Just make sure to save your config when you're done dicking about in the menu.

the always having shotgun out except for when you're actually shooting is to avoid dropping weapons to your enemies, and works because there is not weapon switch time.

i use it for grenades and have a boomstick binded aswell.

but i'm as noob as you. i guess some people would do something like use mouse1 for most weapons and have mouse2 set to shoot with lg.

that way you wouldnt have to press 2 buttons befor starting to shoot with lg(change the mouse1 to lg, and then mouse1), but only 1(mouse2: "take out lg and shoot").

But i've been jumping with mouse 2 for 8 years, so thats out the equation. Maybe LG on the spacebar would do I guess.

And I couldn't find this thing on the Menus btw.

This alias will fire lg then switch back to what you were holding before.

I fail to understand how to load it into the game. I've tried with the menu and different cvars but the same skin stays on the enemy.

use the shiny green block as enemy model. also don't play against bots that doesn't make sense at all. qw ffa still has lots of newbs out there to play against.

I dont want to use the green block one, its gay. Also I want to play 1on1, and bots skill 10 win me anyway.

i'm just saying... qw is probably the only quake version i know of where ffa is actually fun and gets played a lot. 1on1 will be massacre for the first year or so even if you're a fast learner with good q3 skills.

If you want green enemy model just type r_enemyskincolor 0 255 0

Also if you don't want green shiny block you can experiment with r_skincolormode 1-5. I'm sure you'll find something you like.

Try values 2, 4 or 5.

"Enemyskin green" should do it, unless skins are somehow disabled.

cl_fakeshaft 1 is the equivalent of truelightning, but that doesn't make the shaft "quiet", it just updates the visual position instantly client-side.

If your PC can handle it set your fps to match your usb rate. So 500fps in most cases.

Don't limit yourself to 120. This isn't quake 3 and there is no limit to how smooth you can make qw. Go as high as you can while maintaining a stable framerate in heavy action. Popular variables include 308, 500, 1,000, etc.

Matching it to your usb polling rate is utterly pointless because of inconsistencies in the timing, but usb rates are high enough that they make good fps values anyway.

For some reason, anything higher than cl_maxfps makes everything feel jerky.

Don't use command lines anymore. Everything can be saved to config and it's a much better way of doing things, especially when it comes to clickable links for things like demos and qtv.

No, that's still too low and jerkier than it needs to be. That would only be smooth with vertical synch, and that opens up a whole other box full of problems.

You're already over-rendering frames at this point, and going higher than you refresh rate is useless.

Categorically untrue. Without vertical synch, a maxfps matched to your refresh rate produces unnecessary visible tearing which adds to perceived choppiness of gameplay.

Higher = better. This was always true to some extent, but as long as you have a recent client with "cl_earlypackets" enabled, then it is absolute truth.

You might think it's "good enough" as is, but higher is undeniably superior.

It's nothing like that at all. Framerates don't have ergonomic properties. Higher is better.

You can have 1000 FPS and 60hz refresh, and you're still only seeing 60 of the frames each second. Most of those 1000 frames will be redundant, but do you really want to roll the dice on having monitor refreshes on repeated redundant frames? It's a small risk anyway, but utterly useless to go above your refresh rate to begin with.

Ahh, I see where you misunderstand now. Monitors don't show one individual frame, wait until the entire thing is displayed, then look for another one (unless vsync is on). If it is in the middle of displaying a frame when the next one is done, it will stop drawing the previous one and continue with the completed frame. That leads to tearing.

Tearing is actually the result of a frame which was interrupted when another frame was completed, so you get two discrete image fragments in the same monitor refresh. The more frames that are drawn, the less noticeable the tearing is, until it becomes completely indistinguishable at sufficiently high framerates because every frame that is drawn gets displayed at least partially.

At framerates equal to your refresh rate, the period of time for one frame to be drawn does not synch up perfectly with the time for one full screen refresh, therefore each refresh is actually two individual frames spliced together. With higher frame rates, you have more frames displayed with less time between each frame, so the tearing is less obvious. For example, with a framerate of 500, each frame that is jammed up against another (there are over 8 in this example) in the same screen refresh is 1/500 of a second apart, so each frame is visually less different. Therefore the tearing (ie. the visual difference between each frame displayed during the same screen refresh) is virtually unnoticeable.

No, you're throwing parts of frames away, which is better than having each frame split in half over two refreshes. You don't get charged extra for each frame your gpu produces so I don't understand your objection.

if you have 2 fps, the difference between the first and the second frame will be drastic, this the tearing, that appears when the monitor begins to draw the second frame (for example when frame 1 is 60% loaded) will be enormous.

if you have 1000fps, the difference between the first drawn frame and the second one are minimal to non-existant, and thus you won't notice the tearing.

if you have infinite frames per second the is also no difference between two consecutive frames.

This makes for a more pleasing (though, that's preference) view, but you're still rendering and dropping frames needlessly, and potentially dropping the frames you need.

you will see a huge 'line' where the two frames are spliced together. you're not actually telling you prefer this to higher fps?

Yep I use lg on spacebar. Works great.

Inter and murdoc also use spacebar.

It's in the frogbot.pak file. Use a utility like "Pak Explorer" to edit it if you want.

nQuake has a nice in-game menu which helps edit and see the optins for the important cvars. Also you can save and buck up your config through it.

For some reason, skins (as using png images such as green.png) doesn't work. Not both on the menu or using the cvar "enemysking green".

There are two possible reasons for this.

1: You have 24-bit textures disabled, which means it can't load png files as textures for anything.

2: You have skins disabled using one of a number of commands.

This and your previous comments about how high maxfps makes things jerky leads me to believe that you seriously dicked something up in your config and you should probably start again clean, only changing what you need to in order to see if it works before you start changing unnecessary variables.

I fucked up something in the cfg. Deleted config.cfg and simply selected the green skin from the menu for enemymodel.

Now heres something annoying:

Whenever I minimize using alt+tab, when I go back into the game, shits really dark. I have to change the gamma to whatever value then change it back to what it was (I use 0.4). Why is this happening?

ATI card? Modern ATI drivers throw a hissy fit when confronted with old OpenGL games. They broke support for them some time after 6.12 (which is why I still use catalyst version 6.12). You should find that dynamic lighting sucks framerate in a way that makes Crysis seem low-resource.

"vid_forcerestoregamma 1" should fix the gamma problems, and you can decide for yourself whether the framerate is poor enough to justify rolling back to old drivers. Given the advantage in spotting enemy quads conferred by dynamic lighting, turning it off is absolutely not an option.

Yep ATI card. For some reason I don't mind playing QW with picmip 0, and basically lots of eyecandy (as long as it isn't terribly annoying visually, like that massive explosion with sparks etc). I noticed im getting drops down to 170 fps (using 308 as max) in fucking DM4 with one bot, and I have a 3870x2.

Would be a bit lame to go back to really old drivers for the sake of QW only. I also enjoy playing newer games (few) such as L4D2 or Serious Sam HD. Isn't there any workaround to avoid installing old drivers?

I'm afraid not. They're irreperably broken, and no amount of tweaking and fiddling will do it. I know this because I spent about 3 weeks trying to convince myself otherwise by dicking around with every possible configuration.

As for the eyecandy, I play with it too. Player models are bright enough, and level geometry is simple enough, that you can always see what's going on whether you've got single-coloured walls or full 24-bit textures and lighting.

Thats totally lame then. Why no one has started some sort of petition to force ATi to update their OpenGL support on their drivers?
