i respect your effort to bring new maps to the game, but whats needed is a whole new system of bringin new maps to players first for testing and feedback then to competitions. A change is needed in the mentality of gamers who think its ok to play the same map for 10 years just as its ok to play footbal since the begining on the same course. i read about this compariosn every time and its fucking stupid. look at defrag, they could asweel still be tricking on dm6, but they have a good system for bringing new maps to the comunity and bringing competitions with these new maps. I dont know much about sc, dont play it either but, ive read several times it has new sets of maps every 6/12 months in its competitions. Thats something that should be present in ql competitions. Its also far more attractive to new players who want to compete and for noobs geting in the game. Anyone can jump in and be in some kind a way on the same level as the old players, because its a whole new game with a new map.

and why would this have any more chances of ending up in ql than the already suggested ones?

I'm sure that ID could arrange the chosen map to atleast reach the focus group! Plus it's better than nothing ^^

Nice initiative, though i'd probably recommend a general map design competition as i personally think DM6 is good enough and it would only lose it's "novelty" with change.

Perhaps we can decide your winner on air between the guys we have on, or atleast discuss them before opening a poll or whatever method you are intending.

I'm just saying that having 2 versions of 1 map in quake live would be the wrong way to go with it, and changing it for duel would effect TDM and CA :)

Just to explain what brought me here.

I think there are many reasons to do a contest like this one. Ending up with a redesigned dm6 may be one, but as you guys point out we do not know id Software's plan regarding third party maps, and therefore there is not much we can do at this level. The map was changed in the past, so it might evolve again.

As bad as I am as a player, I personally love to play 1on1, and even more I like to hear experienced people talking about it. I am inspired every time I hear 2GD casting and love his analytical style. This is the spirit I hope to this contest will convey.

Moreover I feel that the competitive 1on1 knowledge base of the community is poorly documented. There is people out there that knows a lot about what makes good maps, yet try to google for it and you will have an hard time. I think that the more the community discusses item placements, layouts, routes, etc. the more mappers will have resources to produce good maps.

I tried to make the contest very accessible. You just download the images, and do some copy paste to show your ideas. This is supposed to be entertaining. The prize is just some sugar to add a little bit of competition and make some lazy asses move.

These are just my 5002 cents about a great game... :p

Adding a teleporter is a pretty obvious addition because it requires so little work and adds so many potentially radical changes to how the map is played.

If by the given circumstances you refer to id software attitude, my opinion then is that they always played the safe game. They did not get involved unless there was:
a) a serious entity involved (ex: ESL)
b) wide consensus among the community (ex: ztn case)

As I am mister nobody, what I can hope to do is rise consensus. Ideally a contest where the hardcore community is strongly involved would serve the purpose and have the map changed. This is not asking for the moon: it's just changing a couple of items placements and work on a bunch of brushes. If I alone ask it won't work, but if ESR asks then it's an other story.

If on the other hand, by the "given circumstances" you refer to the community being lazy whining asses not willing to open paint for five minutes to show their thinking on a game they wasted their youth on, well... I'm a calm positive person and I love to be surprised.

what about option "a"? lets make ESL to put together a map pack for id :)

I wonder if what is true for id Software is also true for ESL. If that is the case, we need consensus among the community so that ESL thinks it's a good thing, so that id Software thinks it's a good thing.

well.. as you know we already did a dm6 remix, also with pro players like noctis, 2GD etc, and we already had a teleporter which got removed again by many requests, we tried to keep the level design and remove the dominance for the one whos in control and i think we could realize it with those changes. Currently testing it in Q3.
(If you do a QL competition, you can not test it vs real players)

Where/how did you get the map overlay?

Are they available for other maps?

I extracted the qzdm6.map, loaded it in gtk radiant and manually cut out the different levels, took screenshots and finally used live trace in illustrator to get the look you see. It took me a couple of hours as it was the first time I did something similar. I guess you can get better at it and do it faster.

See the other dm6 remake threads for details on this on-going debate which, I think, started with 2gd talking about his ideas for dm6 during a live cast for Dubai or one of the subsequent online tournies.

Basically, there's all sorts of tweaks that are being supposed. Like connecting main atrium to rail with a bridge/hallway which has a YA on a ledge in third-floor main atrium and another that includes a tele near upper/mid SG, etc.

You are free to change whatever you like. The images are there to help, but are not intended to restrict you. Of course, if you rip off the map completely you might have a hard time explaining your design. But in general structural changes are as welcome as item replacements.

I think they need to remake the edge (q2dm1) for quake live. I know it was redone for q3 but it wasn't done very well. It would obviously be a good CA map but if done right it could be a duel, tdm and ca map just like dm6.

2 ya changed the pg spot added shards and 5h bubbles and moved GL and shotty together at pillars. Spawns are mostly the same :p

Let it die, in other words.

Firstly if we are going to do this lets do it differently to the normal "change one item and a weapon" method.

Delete both the stairs at LG and RA-> Bridge and replace them with alcoves that chimney to the above level + a teleport to the level above. This allows you to go up/down. The tele exit could be in the air like on aero but that is not important really.

Next one, or both of the following.

1. add a teleport from pillars to mega
2. add a passageway from pillars to mega.

Both these options would most likely have the "exit" on the middle level. If both are added the teleport exit can be somewhere else, maybe GL or closer to the .

Extend the rail ledge the oposite direction towards current YA and add some shards or +5 healths. Add a ceiling above the rail ledge to allow splash from below and remove the wall/door at rail so the ledge can be viewed from bridge.

Finally I would like a portal from the floor of mega, specifically the side with no door/jump pad and have it exit above the door to pillars directly above it. The exit would be off the ground like aero so the wall/roof here would need to be carved out somewhat.

Without going into weapon/armour changes which most people seem happy with I feel that this would make the map flow a lot smoother, it would completely change how it is played but I have no huge problem with that.

I do not like the suggestion of adding a room/armour at rail. It seems "out of the way" for armour.

Ideally yes, but id have said that at the moment the chances of any new user created maps making it into QL are very slim. Most likely they would add Q3 classics.

Besides, it's a lot of work to create something that people will actually want to play. You need a small group of people to design/create/test/polish a map, for it to have a chance. Most people just don't want the hassle, or don't have the time to go through all that, only for the map to potentially disappear into the forest of maps on Lvl.

If id do someday hold a mapping competition for QL, I think that'll be great motivation for mappers and testers to get together and maybe create some really nice work.

I am working on a duel map right now. But I don't know if people will like it since it is my first map and I am really new to this.
The map is still in a very early stage, but I will release a beta as soon as possible and post it on ESR
Hopefully I can get some constructive feedback.
I have to hurry though... competition is gonna end in mid of december.

Another problem is that everyone talks and whines but no1 is doing anything. We did all the work with getting ideas, converting the map, changing the map, did a q3 and ql version, getting a Q3 server, uploading it and now have a guess how many of those who suggested changing it actually tested/played it in a duel. Exactly.... not one.
I cba anymore tbh, I'm sorry, but its just disappointing.

You know, getting motivation for testing a map without the slightest indication of a chance for it to ever make it into QL isn't easy. Especially if you have to test it in a different game.

It’s nothing personal, but I have the impression that some people really have the wrong attitude. Id Software owes nobody. Sitting down and pretending they make the game of your dreams and complain when they do not, is simply delusional.

Here is what I think:

Do you want new maps? Make them! You are not able to make them but know a great deal about 1on1? Give your insights and help other to make maps! Do you want maps to be included in QL? Think of the conditions that maximize the chances of is Software including external maps and go for it!

I hate to sound trivial, but there is a big difference between posting “maps maps maps maps maps… “ at every single QL update and tell them “look guys this is what the community came up after discussing and testing a new version of the map”. Put yourself in their shoes and that’s a no-brainer.

Now, you can decide if you want to complain that there are no guarantees they will include the maps or if you want to use your knowledge and influence to build something that rises the chances of a change. But please, if you value your time so much that having a positive attitude and spending time with the game you love is already too much, then tell me what amazing activities you are usually involved with because I might enjoy them too.

You could put an one way teleporter from LG stairs/shards area up to the RL above MH jumppad. Would generate a lot of new options.

I think dm6 should be left alone, I agree that its way hard to get control back, but
I think there should be one map like that. dm13 also has a minus becouse its too
easy to get your control back, so we have these 2 maps that are totaly diffrent and
I think that's cool. I think instead of trying to remake the old maps, they should make
new maps like t7. But that's only my thought, I might be totaly wrong becouse I only
played like for a year, so I could be wrong.
