AGP is almost as fail as QL updates after qcon, though in fact QL updates suck even more. Btw ID announced in qcon that "soon after qcon we will launch big updates to QL and bring it out of beta? and as far as i know they havent done a shit after qcon though its already 3-4 months." AGP did quite similar thing a long time ago, they hyped that they will be like new CPL or something, but what they are? it seems that quite nothing :|

Whether you guys like it or not, this is news and it is related very specifically to the Quake live scene. Your hate is funny and is expected but these are big strides for a player association and for the sport.

Now for all of you that keep emphasizing what my company needs to do first, my company has nothing to do with the players association. You guys are really fucking stupid sounding at this point. I have reand some of the comments against AGP and some of yours and all i can say is. You're embarrissing. You act like you're above everyone else. I listen to the players. And they know it. Especially since they have been making most of the AGP decisions. It's not a community association, its a players association.

And yes, AGP is for the players. But you will need the communitys support, not their bad will. Just take the citicism and deal with it. Trying to tell people they cant have opinions and should be grateful isnt the right way to go.

If you didnt pay attention, the nominees volunteered and are top players. They are doing something. Yes Cooller is one of them. Yes Stermy is one of them. And the rest. It is hardly pointless. If you have ever played seriously, you'd know that almost all top players I have ever known have wanted this. The reasons are obvious. There is alot that goes on that isn't public with tourneys in the past and happenings even today. It's not always about you, the fan or whatever you guys are.

On the one hand there is the AGP which was setup by you (I'm sure others were involved..) and has its home on the AGP Tour website thing.

Then on the other hand we have the AGP Tour tournament thing which was originally announced with about 50 games (and again you are involved in that project) but never happened but has been continually discussed as having movement and being worked on.

If you wanted them to be totally seperate entities then why aren't they?

AGP - Association of Gaming Professionals, the player association and all related.

AGP Tour = technically it's all competitions concerning the AGP. Obviously this is continual.

VIDA LLC = my company that has attempted to organize tournaments and hasn't yet.

We started with 4 FPS 1v1 games and it would have been awesome but it was impractical as the recession hit and the other games all died. When was the last time you played UT3, Warsow, Q4, or Q3 (granted QLive). Everyone had started moving to QL then and we made a decision. Was over 1.5 years ago. Not a big deal really.

I've talked to the players directly affected by having no tournaments that were planned over the course of this endeavor. Most are in the loop of how things are right now on my companies end. I don't need to go public with things that are my business. People can always ask me directly on IRC. I've announced our intentions and thus far for tournaments, they have not worked out. Everyone suffered from the same thing though if you pay attention: the ONLY tournaments that existed this year have been QuakeCon, as it should, ESL Dubai, Gamescom ESL, and now Dreamhack, with ESL Canada Finals around the corner. This is fine and all, but if you look at the prizes, its VERY low. One was $1k first, 2 are $3k. QuakeCon is the bomb at $14k 1st.

Sum it up and assume Rapha went to Dreamhack and won all of these: 1st place is $21,000 TOTAL money this year. BEFORE taxes and any additional things he has to pay to his team, etc (if there is anything). This is around poverty in the United States. And it is only for if one player won everything.

For the time it takes to be top and continue a sport, this will not do. It's a side show. You wonder why older players don't play anymore and it is because it is nearly a waste of their time once they have to work full time and have a life. My company has always been able to do tournaments this small but we chose otherwise. Apologies for wanting to do bigger $ tournaments completely focused on Quake Live only. But we still are doing what we can and I will still be honest to the players about how things are and what is being done. My company is not a huge international organization that is needed to be funded with alot, taking from the players and competitions. Our plan is good, just hasn't worked out yet.

Trust me, it isn't awesome for me to spend my time making no $ and listening/ replying to this gripe bs if it is to do nothing but waste my time and yours. My company does all of this for everyone and for the possibility of Quake Live being a serious and growing sport that benefits all. Alot of you are here for Quake. Somewhere in there you loved one of the games like I have. Well, I'm just spending all my time trying to do something about it.

The power behind a union relies on it's ability to control the work force. In this case, that force is the players. If you sanction a tournament, and every single AGP rule is not met, you have to force players not to show up, or the players association has no value. Do you think you can stop competitors from showing up to tournaments due to discrepancies between AGP rules and the tournaments rules? I do not think so, but that has not yet been determined. With so few tournaments a year I could hardly see this having any effect on a players decision to attend a tournament.

Moreover variance in rules and map pools is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact I believe it's a good thing. You can argue that the association could have a range of acceptable rulesets. This again, removes the value of the association. If there was one constant league in which this association pertained to, this would all make sense. We could vote more specifically to improve the format of that one leagues system. But, don't for a second believe you are doing us any good by trying to force things upon different tournament organizers. Tournament organizers are the ones doing us a favor and if they can't meet our every need, who are we to say fuck you?

The only value I see this having is in seeding, in which a tally of all tournaments, not just AGP sanctioned events are accounted for. It would be easy for tournament organizers to use this system to seed their attendees. This doesn't require any support from the players, just one guy with little to do in life except to keep a running points system based on tournaments he has nothing to do with.

No tournament is being forced to do anything. Players are not forced not to show up if rules are not followed. Things just started so the haste in some of these community peeps is pretty amazing. And you always personally tell me like this is my thing. As it doesn't profit me, there might be more players involved in the AGP's development than you might think.
You are missing alot of what a players association does and can do. Expand a little bit.

A players association can help get players more money in tournaments and in sponsoring.
A players association can use its numbers and unity to help all organizers get more funding.
A players association can use its numbers to get more money for sponsoring players and tournaments itself.
A players association can prevent or protect a player from being contractually abused or not paid from tournaments or sponsors.
A players association can help new tournaments grow through recognition and promotion.
A players association can help Quake Live by spreading it worldwide through its sanctioning of competitions and promotion of the game, and unity of the competitive players. The AGP is part of not one competition, but all.
A players association helps the grow the reach of the game and sport , through each player, especially the pros, as they are advocates of a growing sport.
A players association can use its organized player force to get more tournaments within other events. For example, the upcoming ESWC that does not have Quake Live. One organizer going to ESWC and saying they want to do a QL tourney there is nothing to if all the players united going to them professionally and diplomatically and presenting a case.
A players association can show unity in a splintered and very hateful community, which does not convince sponsors to sponsor Quake these days.
A players association can help new players play against similar skill levels and find competitons that suit their level.
A players association can help grow other game modes like CTF and TDM or even CA worldwide through it's rankings, unity, and promotion. This also pertains for sponsoring tournaments and getting mroe teams together. Rankings can really help, as you can see with some of the free tournaments going on now like BiBS.
A players association can help new tourney organizers to run tournaments for non pro players based on Rank. It can also help on their promotion as well as strategy on growth.

I could go on forever on this. But there is a taste of limited mind. These are some reasons we do have members joining daily as well as more support than ESR would like to think, and believe. Maybe you should get involved Vamp. I'm sure you could help the whole. I mean, you used to play right?

Like, we just started player legislation and will go as fast as possible to get everything else going as it comes. For example, CTF Rankings and Sanctioning and legislation is about to begin as well. Like everyone here i also wondered what AGP was.
You did explain it very well a few posts up and combined with the recent AGP sanctioned news items i see quite a few people are asking in their own way (by flaming) how can AGP announce some sort of official professional player ranking and decide which competitions are important (by amount of points) without having to build up a reputation of its own first?


If you haven't noticed most quake players find G7 ranking amusing and they have been around doing.. well probably something important that i don't know about for quite a few years :)

You make a good point, which I neglected, If you have a large enough base then you can provide something for tournament organizers. I'll be interested to see if you guys will be able to push ESWC to include quakelive via numbers. A lot of conclusions will be drawn in the near future.

Leverage would be extreme if you could get some sponsors on board to provide prizes/money for tournament organizers of AGP sanctioned events.

As vamp1re said, the only real power you could even think of having right now is via boycotts which is just not going to happen and even if it did, it would be doing more harm than good. I think everyone here can understand what it is you're trying to create but I for one am completely at a loss as to how you think you're going to achieve that goal.

This is a good step in the right direction. The players who understand the game the most (the "pros") should be the ones to make decisions that affect tournament play as they are the most educated on the matter.

The only issue I see is that biases and alliances among representatives is almost a guarantee. That being said, its much better then what we have now. Players wait for tournaments, not knowning which maps or rules to practice with and often train a 5 map pool for one tournament while training another 2 or 3 maps for another at the same time. If the AGP's goal is to create a foundation on which we can get a standardized rule set for quake that is dictated through the top players opinion, I'm all for it.

The voices of the scrubs is not important. Obviously the people with 10,000 posts on this website will be against this, just as they have been against every new idea introduced into esports in the last 5+ years (cant blame them too much, there have been so many epic fails recently). The fact is that they sit and watch the good players and the game, but it IS the top players who understand it on a much higher level. Leave the decisions to the pros, not to uneducated tournament organizers who are dealing with quake for their first time in years or the guys who sit around all day and talk about it.

My 2 cents.

I dont think anyone is in disagreement that allowing pro's to decide on a ruleset is a good idea. But how do you make an event follow these rules? You need to have leverage on a whole other level to influence events and organizations where time and money is at stake. This requires a degree of power that the agp is not interested in as streetrunner said.

Which I find most confusing because the entire idea of a players association is to give power to the players. Both in the ability to defend their rights and the ability to create changes that benefit them.

I've thought about how this sort of thing could be done but the problem is that any realistic outcome to a player associations actions is going to have a negative impact on the scene as it is right now.

A players association by nature is a trouble-causing organisation simply because it has to be to benefit the players. This is fine when the industry to which it belongs is very large and self-sustainable but the 'quake e-sports industry' right now pretty much survives on handouts.

Someone else said it but its true so I will repeat it, event organisers are doing us all a favour by running quake tournaments and the last thing we want to do is make it any harder for them. The only way the AGP could get what it says it intends to get without killing the quake e-sports dream entirely is to somehow get its hands on a lot of money to throw at tournament organizers as bribes.

When I say it's not about power, I am not referring to giving the player power over taking over the universe of Quake. Tournaments usually go by what the players want anyways as the players bring the attention to a tournament. The power of a players association can extend alot further than single tournaments by uniting them all as well as pushing everything as a whole at once. There is no indication or intent to mess anything up right now and quite the opposite. It's really alot simpler than it seems, as well as alot less epic regarding tournaments. It is the other things that can really be driven by such a force. I'll release details of that intent if you guys want it. But in reality, I'd prefer not to. These kinds of things are best left to action instead of possibility and explanation, as I have learned, believe it or not.

I think explanations would help you immensely on this site if they are well thought out, reasoned and actually feasible.

There is a HUGE difference between explaining how you are going about something and what you are currently doing/have done which is just state what you're going to do without telling anyone publicly how.

Anyway this all has two possible out comes regardless of what you tell anyone now. Either you make something happen and everyone will come around and forget everything that happened leading up until that point or you won't and your dream for a players association will die. What you tell people now will just affect how many members you will have when that time comes. If making something happen relies on having a large member base then you might want to try harder at winning this community over, or at least rethink your strategy.

If youa re meaning me, it is because I haven't been on here. Details of everything from function to goals to everything will be released very soon. The players volunteered and know what is expected. North American Election begins on Monday. And other regions thereafter.
