btw, I remember the VOD where DaHang was helping with commentary for some Damiah vs Purri match, and I know he shows him a lot of respect. I don't want to come off as an asshole, and when I last spoke to Purri a couple years ago I gave him compliments on some of his fancier kills, I like the guy. Second thing, there was a US tournament where damiah participated with 100+ ping. Result in the end of US tournament 1 Scooby, 2 Damiah and then 3 Dahang. PS: No offence, dahang is good, but he is not that good as the rest of q2 eu scene. He is n1 player in US, but not in eu, not even close to be top. Thats just my opinion which was discussed plenty of times on q2scene.net.

Cypher started in Q3, but DaHang went straight from Quake 2 to Quake 4, like a lot of players did, actually.

dkt played Q2 before UT came out, then after UT he played q3 for a while along with CS before making CS his main game.

He has the least experience in quake 3/quakelive as far as literal days/months/years from the first day he had started, as opposed to pretty much everyone in the top 16. Maybe even deeper.

Shitloads of the european cups are simply created by some guy on IRC making a small effort pulling up a bracket page, taking signups and complete a tourney in a weekend. It's not rocket science, they have only themselves to blame if there's absolutely NOTHING going on.

United States is a big place. Much easier to organize an event in Sweden or any other EU country than it is in the United States just based on the size of the country.

For example: I could host a small tourney in Stockholm with some decent prizes and expect people from Sweden to show up.

I could then host that same tourney in California, and only people from the area in California would most likely attend. People from LA would probably not travel to SF and vice versa because of travel costs. In reality, it is just not feasible to have a bunch of "small tourneys and cups" in the United States. Too much geography to cover so the prize needs to be "worth the travel."

Unless people are content with a bunch of regional/state tournaments. Which, I don't think they are because you are limiting the player pool and nobody will really follow an event unless the best players are competing.

Even with online cups. I'm sure pings throughout Sweden (just an example) are fairly consistent.

Matching up West Coast vs East Coast players is always a problem with finding neutral servers. Even if neutral servers are found, you get a decline in gameplay as both players will most likely be playing with a 60-70 ping. (Probably a good 30-40 ping higher than they are used to)

For example: I ping 35 consistently to all over California. Texas, I ping 70+.....huge difference. I ping 100 to Chicago, and who knows what I would ping to New York or Florida.

I just know whenever we played in online teamplay tournaments it was always a pain in the ass to find a neutral server. Not to mention the fact that playing with ping sucks in general. =)

However, I do agree that more cups/tournies should happen. I would even compete in some small regional stuff just for fun if the opportunity presented itself.

Yeah and most participants in EU cups are on GMT +1 with the occasional GMT +2 / GMT players. The time difference between Florida and California must be what four or fives hours?

The main point was 90% of the Europeans in the cups are CET, so you just play at 7-9 and it's fine (Most you'll deal with usually will be a two hour difference of GMT vs EET for one or two games), in USA you'd have to start in a much narrower time zone to have cup with a decent turn out.

To get a fair (and playable) ping for a match between a north- vs southeuropean or a east- vs westeuropean player is really hard... usually there are only 1 or 2 'good servers' located a bit 'central' in europe.
For instance a game of Finland vs Spain/Portugal/Italy etc etc. is pretty much impossible.
And have you heard of anybody in Armenia/Azerbaijan/Georgia/Ukraine/Belarus/Macedonia etc. etc. playing in these online cups?? (and if so on what kind of ping haha)

Agreed. Living on the West Coast and playing on Chicago and NY servers, against guys who actually live in Chicago or NY, is just a pain in the ass.
It was ok with OSP/CPMA, but ra3 and other baseq3-type mods sucked HARD.
It still sucks in qlive, but it's not as bad.
