how i remember av3k won 10 minutes periods vs rapha in semifinal of eswc atheens on both maps... after that rapha slowly took control and did make awesome comeback... dont wanna to say that 20 minutes give another chanse and 25 too may be yea but i meant 10 minutes absoultly not enough...

i feel this time span doesn't support a risk taking gamestyle because there just isn't enough time to plan and build a comeback effort. don't know what the players themselves say but these games leave me kind of ... none the wiser.

10 minutes leaves a lot of unanswered questions in a 1 on 1. I agree completely that 10 minutes leaves the duels a little, "bleh."

I felt 15 minutes was too short when they cut it down from 20 minutes back in my day.

15 minutes is ok, but 20 minutes really tests your concentration and your consistency in my opinion. Can't just be hot for 5 minutes and defend a lead with the longer time limits. Especially in the case of maps where a beginning spawn is extremely important.

Longer time limits also allow for more in-game adjustments.

Of course, I started when all duels were 20 minutes long. 10 minutes just seems way too short to me.

And from a player point of view I'm pretty neurtral actually.... sure some games turn out to be a bit of random due to the worse player getting a really good start into the match... and then the better player would've won in 15 min... but could lose in 10. But still the better player did mess up somewhere to get behind so.......

But that's what I said. The risk taking player is bound to mess up occasionally. That's part of his gaming style. And those 10mins punish that kind of player severely. And favors a rather clockwork style gaming, including the occasional all deciding lucky shot.

I mean this is not QW where a direct rocket hit and some nice lg pinning can melt down all you might have stacked up like coke on your tongue. On the classic maps, once a player has control of two major items the opponent needs time to get back into the game. Of which he has little, starts to feel major pressure and begins taking risks he does *not* want.

I mean if nothing else, just listen to the shoutcasters. "Ye he has control of mega and ra now and will maintain that for minutes blah blah blah". Why, thanks, But then please give players the time to come back. Is what I'm thinking.

Also, if it was the "hiding in the hall" bit which influenced your ranking, I might wonder whether it's really a sign of risk adversity. Because running down the clock could well become a major sport these days, no matter what style you feel comfortable in.

he apparently had lots of sound issues vs cooller, so id imagine he was in #care mode ;p. if you wach some of his demos on here you will see he normally likes to hold control while hardly ever risking anything. prefering to let his opponent come to him and make the mistakes.

Stermy did get heavy influence from fatality, who certainly is not a risk taker.

Ye right, I could agree to that. East European resp. Russian players generally seem to have a tendency to play a little more offensive. Might relate to the temperament or whatever. But that's exactly what I like to see as a spectator.

The point being that, once you get that lucky, early advantage, in Q3 you still need to go on attacking if you really want to secure the win. While QL it's tempting to start merely preventing e.g. from the 5th minute onward and backpedaling from the 8th. That's the style those 10mins seem to support. And I don't like it.

I much prefer the aggressive players too, but lets not forget the master of playing it safe, was the Russian b100.death!

I think the placings show that at the moment duel in QL is fairly balanced between the two styles, obviously for interests sake (and fun!) I'd like to see it skewed towards the aggressive style.

OK, the ranking might be balanced. But I think the point still applies, especially because people increasingly talk about the "one, crucial mistake".

Now, there are games where crucial mistakes decide everything. Like chess. Where, after a crucial mistake, you'll hardly come back. And if you do, then likely only after a prolonged, tough struggle including your opponent making a crucial mistake.

And then there are games which don't have crucial mistakes, unless you make them in the last minute. Like soccer. Where, early on in the game, you can catch as many goals as you want, there'd still be the possibility to come back.

And that's how I think Quake has been in the past, a game which makes some allowance for mistakes and a single one never being "crucial". Which made it fun to watch. Also, players don't need to take prolonged precautions to prevent some unlucky incident causing them make that mistake. And disallow people to maybe even cough in the room because it might break their focus, like it is in chess.

And some allowance makes sense also because it's a computer game, where a mere tech issue might induce a mistake. Like a Windows service kicking in doing some cleanup in the background, where the player might experience a short momentary lag, never knowing why, which prevents him seeing that rocket coming. Bang, crucial mistake, thanks.

Hence, again, 15 minutes. That's all I'm saying (apart from gtv). It's been working so well for so many years.

Well, I'd say in about any game, the less time you have the more the likeliness increases of the outcome being skewed by (bad) luck. Even more so if it's a game which allows you to play defensive.

And if nothing else, an increased talk about "crucial mistakes" should already suggest in which direction things are leaning. But I guess I've made my point.

Incidentally, that's for example what I like about cooller. Most of the time when having a clear advantage, it seems like he almost wants his opponent to come back, maybe even not consciously. But so many times it seemed to me that, having a clear advantage and full item control, he starts becoming sloppy presumably feeling that the game will proceed being a boring routine unless he gives the other player at least something. I don't believe it's conscious decisions but rather an attitude. Like it not only being the win which counts but the game either.

Hmm, I am always liked (as spectator) to "sink in" the game with timelimit 15. 10 feels boring to me most of the time. Its over before I get the rythm. Well, and in a lot of the matches I won (yes, that happens:) in QL the timelimit 10 rescued me so I really think it hurts the game, especially on the older maps.

Proper disappointing games today, not just the results, but also the level of play. Look at stermy cooller and z4muz games yesterday compared to how they played today.

Gz to av3k for winning, but gutted that he did tbh.

I'm not a big fan of avek, but he played some pretty good quake today

I have to disagree, it is just that aveks style didnt suit zamuz. Sometimes a single unexpected push can turnaround tables and avek was doing such pushes all the time. It seemed that zamuz likes going a bit agressive at times, but in his previous matches he didnt faced anyone who would do that.

Players always look good when they are winning, and if they met person with a style they arent fit with, their game may look bit messy. Zamus definitly did great with the cup, he answered expectations of many people here, but I wonder if final wouldnt look similiar if he would go against Cooller.

z4muz never takes any risks, and never has. He relies on getting control from the off or the other player "giving" him control then he just runs the armours and engages in battles over the items he's running.

He never seeks out frags, even in advantageous situations (e.g. ESWC 2004 vs czm on ztn he had numerous chances to finish czm off and extend his lead but refused to take them) let alone where he has only that option (It took him until like 9:00 on qzdm13 vs av3k before he made an attack...).

Even in the qzdm6 game against Stermy, it was a Stermy mistake and then aggressive play by Stermy which gave z4muz the frags and ultimately the win.

On t9 in todays final he picked some shaft fights during which he had slightly poorer stack. Maybe as you say it was cause he knew he will win them, but even if calculated, many other players wouldnt participate in them. Then look at what avek did, like jumping down with rockets after barely running away for his life by jumppad on dm13. That was beyond what anybody could expect. Since we saw a lot of such situations, it is either avek was outhinking zamuz or avek style rich with unexpected pushes didnt suit zamuz at all. Either way calling the final poor, because top contenders game didnt look same as day before, against DIFFERENT opponents, is one of the silliest excuses that can be made.

Anyway the game is on, and now I want jibo properly back too :P

av3k is all about being aggressive in illogical situations in order to surprise the opponent and remain unpredictable.

But it wasn't that his style countered z4muz, it's just z4muz is ineffective in general against players that can match his control and aim.

That would mean that untill the final nobody was able to match his aim and control. Well he didnt fought the strongest possible opponents, but would outcome be the same if avek used lets say zamuz own style? I think it would be even closer if he did, and so will hand it, at least partialy, to avek agressive style. Feel free to disagree, but I think thats an important factor too.

Aside stylematching, the best part is we enjoy the variety.

He was fortuitous to beat Stermy in the semi-final, if it wasn't for Stermy being a z4muz clone himself he could easily have not been in the final.

As for your question, no, because it's z4muz style which isn't effective against the best of the best players (which is why he is a top5 but not winner guy).

It looked pretty easy for av3k. I guess when he actually decides to train seriously he would be unstoppable. Same goes for Cypher. He wasn't nr. 1 on cypher's top 5 duelers list for no reason :p.

Cooller was playing amazing, im pretty sad he lost but also nice to see av3k doing well, i feel like av3k is a pretty strong counter for cooller style wise, he seemed to read his dodging really well, which other players wasnt able to, ah well, he'll win one soon!

Allthough I am a fan of z4muz, I would have rather seen Cooller in finals with bo5 maps as I think he would have deserved it more. To sum it up I think Dreamhack needs Double Elimination system.

av3k was the best player this tournament. Really interesting style. Z4muZ didn't have a chance, but looking at the first day games it was pretty obvious to me that av3k and cooller were they best players in the tournament.
It's a shame they met in the semis.

They were way above everybody imho.

Yes, happens way to often in group stage SE systems that the best players met before the final (and make the finals dull to watch). DE at least make it very likely that the best players meet in the final. For example, in DE, if Cooller and av3k had met before, the looser would most likely made it through the loosers bracket and get to the finals.

It seems like the players' skill fluctuates far too much tournament-to-tournament and day-to-day to use systems that rely so heavily on good seeding (single elimination).
